A tool for cutting wood at an angle

Instructions for using the crosscut saw

Originally the cross cutter was invented to work with wooden products, but now by picking up the right cutting blade it is possible to cut through materials of different rigidity, from metal to Styrofoam, obtaining accurate cuts.

Working with a crosscutters is not particularly difficult, but a minimum skill is still needed. Work algorithm can be represented as a sequence of several operations.

  • The base of the device is attached to the work surface with a screw clamp or self-tapping screws.
  • Marks are placed on the workpiece to indicate the place of cutting.
  • The workpiece is secured to the platform of the power drill with the mark against the slit in the side plate.
  • Set the degree of angle of sawing and fix it so that the saw moves only in one plane.
  • The cut of the end piece is made.

When working with a device it is important to take into account several nuances and not to forget about the well-known rule, according to which you must measure seven times and cut once.

  • Which corner should you get. the inside or outside. To get the inside corner the back part of the workpiece is made longer, if an outside corner is needed, then the outside side of the part will be longer.
  • Remember that any corner has two beams. right and left, so the cuts must be positioned so that when docking a continuous line is formed.

Everything begins with the choice of the saw

Part dimensions are not important. But the wider the board, the more accurate the cut will be, and the wider the laths can be sawn. The width of the wood should not exceed half the length of the hacksaw blade, otherwise it will be inconvenient to saw.

Making a jigsaw starts with a cutting out of parts and their marking. In the middle of the base board of the chisel, a straight line is applied at right angles to the sides. Perpendicular line can be drawn using a special angle or by taking any sheet of paper, folded twice.

From the ends of this line, at a distance of half the width of the board, along its length, marks are drawn, and the lines are connected by segments with a marker. As a result, we have lines at 45˚ and 90˚ angles to the long side of the board. But the perpendicular line is the main one on the base, in relation to which the side walls of the frame will be oriented during the installation.

On both side walls, in the middle, as well as on the base, first one perpendicular line is drawn. From them, two more parallel lines are drawn at a distance of half the width of the board, in my case 5 cm. The marking is carried out with a ruler or a caliper. Here it is necessary to try to put some lines accurately, as the accuracy of material sawing will depend on it in the end. It should be noted that the wider the base board, the more accurate the sawing will be.

Next, you need to outline a section of each wall, which will be adjacent to the base of the jigsaw. As my substrate is made of chipboard 18mm thick, I need to cut a 18mm wide strip. In the middle of the strip to run a fishing line and on it at an equidistant distance from each other to mark points for drilling holes for screws.

To prevent the drill from running away at the beginning of drilling, small countersinks are made in the planned points with the core, then holes with a diameter of 4 mm are drilled, and if the self-tapping screws are countersunk, it is better to make a countersink, although it is not necessary.

The next step is cutting a groove in the walls of the wood drilling machine. The strip should be fixed in a vice or with clamps on a table and with a metal saw to cut through the planned lines. The middle line is cut at an angle of 90˚, and the edges at an angle of 45˚. Precision is not required here, but it is advisable to do the job carefully. The kerf should reach only to the line of attachment of the walls to the base of the jigsaw.

Since the base of the chipboard is a soft material, it is best to fix the walls with self-tapping screws with a rare thread pitch. Although you can use any screws that you have on hand with a length of 25-50 mm.

After making the base and the walls, you can proceed to the next step, the assembly of the jigsaw. To do this, accurately align the middle kerf in the wall with a perpendicular line on the base of the woodworking machine, with an awl to pierce the solid wall of the side edge of the chipboard and screw in the self-tapping screws. It is better to drill a hole in the plywood, with a diameter equal to the diameter of the internal thread of the screw to the depth of its length.

It is convenient to assemble the jigsaw by fixing the base with clamps on a home-made repair table. Thus, the bottom end of the side wall is easily aligned with the bottom surface of the base of the jigsaw.

While test cutting with the crosscut saw at a 45˚ angle, the saw blade tensed and rubbed against the wall of the kerf. I had to mill them a little with a flat file.

I made the sides of the jigsaw from aluminum alloy, but they can be made of plywood or any other solid sheet material. The thicker the sides, the longer the tool will last.

Mechanical pivoting jigsaw

The pivoting jigsaw is used for more accurate sawing. It is used for medium- and small-thickness wood or plastic workpieces. In work you can operate the hacksaw from 290-600 mm with a turn of 15-135 degrees. There are also models with rotation up to 180 degrees. Structurally, the device consists of a metal base.

Вместо боковой стенки обустроена поворотная конструкция, которая предполагает крепление полотна для распила в направляющих поворотного узла. The chisel is supplemented with a curved or archer saw. The base of the crosscut has a special clamp for securing the workpiece.

Among available models you can choose from Fit Profi and Champion 180, Zubr bowie saw. The advantage of the design is the high accuracy of the work, as well as a long stroke of the saw, which increases the speed of sawing. Cutting depth will be higher, there is a possibility of processing parts of different lengths and thicknesses.

Is there a difference in technology for floor and ceiling skirting

At first glance, there is no difference in corner-cutting for ceiling and floor skirting boards. Indeed, they are not, if we are only talking about how to make a corner with a jigsaw. the technology of sawing is the same.

Otherwise, there are and they relate to methods of determining the length of scraps for jointing in the corners. For example, when cutting an end piece, the upper part of the bar is shortened at the top, while the lower part is shortened at the bottom. When joining a baseboard at an outside corner, the ceiling baseboard is enlarged at the top, the floor baseboard is enlarged at the base.

What for??

Originally, the crosscut saw was used as a device for cutting a board at 45 and 90 degree angles. Modern tools allow cutting workpieces at various fixed angles. A pivoting jig saw makes it possible to adjust any angle of cut.

The need for sawing at an angle arises in many carpentry work, for example, when sawing a door frame, because a mistake can be expensive in the literal sense of the word: you will have to buy a new frame. But even relatively small jobs, such as making frames, material for trim and baseboards, do not allow for misalignment and misalignment.

You need a special hacksaw for work. It differs from the usual variant by its fine teeth and a small offset, which allows making a not wide accurate cut.

Its handle is clamped to the top of the blade to make it possible to use the hacksaw on the entire length.

Angle sawing chair, how to use

The mandrel is a tool for sawing blanks under a certain angle. These blanks can be made of wood and plastic. Most often it is used for cutting door trim, baseboards, wooden bars. You can’t saw a bar by hand at a 45-degree angle, so the tool the chisel was invented for.

They come in different widths and lengths, depending on the size of the workpiece. Here, for example, in the photo below is the most common. One of the inexpensive models, it can saw blanks 65mm wide and 35mm high. If the workpiece is higher, the saw can no longer be inserted into the grooves. It is possible to saw at 45 and 90 degrees. This is good for small, thin bars and short casings. It comes with a simple saw with a fine, unhardened tooth. This option is quite suitable for infrequent household work, the plastic is rather flimsy. Approximate price for 2013 120 rubles.

If you use the cross wire all the time, it is better to buy a more expensive variant, but of higher quality. The crosshair itself is noticeably wider, you can cut workpieces with a width of 100mm and a height of 52mm. Unlike the first option, it is possible to saw not only at an angle, but also at an angle, t.е. it is possible to make the angle in different planes. The plastic is much thicker, making the frame more robust and rigid. For convenience, it can be attached to the table with bolts or self-tapping screws. For this there are two holes. There is a marking on the body for convenience. Included is a saw with a hardened tooth, a powerful rubberized handle, sits well in the hand. To prevent the blade from bending, it has a reinforcing ribs on top. Approximate price 350 rubles.

Another option. With eccentric clamps, which allows you to fix the workpiece of any shape, not only a rectangular flat, but even round. There are angles of 22.5 degrees, 45 and 90, you can also saw at an angle. The width of 110mm, height of 75mm. for quite serious workpieces. Made of thick plastic, you can fix it on the workbench. Saw is not included, it must be purchased separately, it costs 150rub. Plinth plane 300rub.

The baseboard planking plier: how to use it correctly

By a chisel is meant a joinery tool that can be used to cut materials at the required angle. The baseboard plinth saw is an indispensable thing, because it is the most convenient and easy sawing.

The chair is fixed on a table or workbench, held in place by a clamp. It is completely safe and easy to use. Below you will learn how to use the jigsaw, as well as how to make it yourself.

Tools for cutting baseboard

A quality tool, properly chosen, makes it possible to perfectly join the baseboard at all corners. To trim the baguette for the ceiling, various tools are used, which have their own peculiarities of use.

This is a special box with several holes. When performing the operation, a workpiece is inserted inside the device, and then the baguette is cut with the hacksaw. The work is done quite simply, but the edge of the part turns out quite rough, sometimes the product, especially made of foam plastic, even spoils from the impact of an ordinary hacksaw.

Tip: After cutting plastic or wooden baguettes in a jig, the cut areas should be treated with sandpaper or a file.

With this tool the cut is of the highest quality. When cutting an electric tool, the blade is lowered onto the baguette and the desired result is obtained.

With such a tool it is very convenient to trim a baseboard made of wood, as seen in the photo, plastic and other products at an angle. The peculiarity of cutting is the exact marking on the workpiece, and then the smooth lowering of the working saw on the baseboard.

The electric jigsaw creates cuts in different directions, at the right angle. The advantage of the tool is the efficiency and accuracy of work.

With this tool it is easy to cut foam plastic products. After the preliminary marking of the part with a knife, carefully trim the skirting board to the right angle.
