Chainsaw stalls at idle rpm cause
No spark: ignition system problems
When looking for the cause of a chainsaw malfunctions, the first thing to do is to check the spark plug ignition. Often saw owners simply forget to change their plugs on time. And that’s what makes a stable and economical tool. If you use your chainsaw a lot, you need to change the spark plug once a season.
If you don’t see any spark plug defects and you are sure of good contact between the spark plug wire and the spark plug cap, but no spark, the problem is in the ignition electro-mechanic. It’s hard for someone without an electrical background to understand anything there. It is easier to replace the whole assembly.
Chainsaw stalls at idle rpm
There is a chainsaw Partner 738, no problem she worked the first couple of times, and after that was happening with her the following, when you start her in the cold, then immediately turned off, tightened the screw T (idle), was starting fine, but when the chain starts to rotate even when I do not take the hand saw, and heard that the speed of the saw maximum))) Again tightened the screw T, reduced idle speed, the saw idles for a couple of minutes and shuts down, and in the cold did not start at all.
I got a message on my mail the other day that the forum was revived without transferring the old bases. Spam, however, that it has been revived, I have already noticed it myself, occasionally checking because
I don’t spam, I send out a newsletter to a database of registered users
Although, to be more accurate, it is more like a base of registered spammers. many thousands of bots have already made the mistake of starting the saw.
The saddest thing is that on another forum, my modified captcha so massively not punched.
Yes, even if I manage to import the message base, I will not upload old users.
In this article, we will not discuss in detail the causes of cases when the saw does not start at all. The list of faults with this problem is too vast: from factory defect to ignition system malfunction. This article will focus on a particular disadvantage in the saw’s operation: the device stops immediately when it is started, or over a period of time during operation.
Poor fuel mixture quality
Gasoline should be filled into the equipment strictly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Unfortunately, many people ignore this advice and use what they “have on hand. Such a solution leads to loss of traction, detonation and sooting. As a result, the quality of the ICE is reduced, the saw ceases to cope with its tasks, and at high load it stops. The fuel must be completely discharged, and if there is a long interval between working on the saw, it must be drained. It is not recommended to use low-octane gasoline. But checking the quality of the gasoline-oil mixture is more of a recommendation to prevent breakdowns. If the primary cause of the problem is that a low-quality mixture has already been used, changing the petrol is not enough.
Problem with the plugs
Checking the serviceability of the spark plugs should begin with a visual inspection. The spark plug must be dry and clean. If the saw stalls, there’s a chance the plug is primed. It happens with improper cold starts, especially with inexperienced saw owners. In that case, you should try either installing a new spark plug or drying the old one.
Covered with soot candle can signal both the quality of the mixture, and about the problems in the carburetor: the cause is hidden either in the overflow of fuel, or in the flow of oil into the gasoline.
Another breakdown can be related to the ignition unit: when there is no spark. As a rule, in such a case, the spark plug itself remains clean and there is contact between it and the high voltage wire. The ignition unit is usually not repaired, but replaced completely.
The chainsaw stalls under load because of the carburetor
Almost half of all problems that cause the saw to stall when the gas is pressed are related to the carburetor:
- Clogged jets, nozzles. If low-quality fuel is used, the fuel filter lets impurities in the gasoline into the carburetor. As a result, elements of this design become clogged, resulting in reduced fuel flow. The saw loses power, and when the rpm increases, it starts to stall. Can be solved by disassembly and flushing carburetor.
- Needle is stuck. If the gas pedal pump needle is stuck as a result of physical wear or debris, the saw will also shut down. True, not only at high revs. at any moment.
- The problem with the check valve needle. If the spark plug is wet and you are sure that you start the saw without errors, the problem may lie in a loose fit of the check valve needle to the seat. This problem is usually manifested under load.
- The carburetor is sucking air. No or no RPM or stalls under load? The carburetor gasket may be just the problem. This is problematic and can only be found out by reassembling the module. Therefore, before removing it, prepare the gaskets and seals in advance to replace them all.
If the saw is not getting enough air or fuel, it will naturally stall when trying to increase the rpm or even just to idle. Check for contamination of filters by purely visual inspection. If dirt problems are suspected, the filters should be changed.
Hoses, seals, gaskets need to be replaced
All plastic and rubber components deteriorate over time. If the saw works at idle, but when you try to increase RPM or does it very weakly (well, or throttles), it is necessary to check the hoses and glands for continuity. Problems with the hoses are usually found by simple inspection, but the loss of leaks in the glands can be found in most cases only by giving air under pressure.
A problem with the gaskets is usually detected immediately or a short time after the saw has been repaired. If you or someone has recently disassembled the unit and then you have the described problems for no apparent reason, you need to check the quality and correct installation of the gaskets.
The muffler is clogged
The muffler can become clogged over time. This occurs as a result of using a fuel mixture with too much oil. Deposits in the muffler obstruct the free flow of gases and reduce engine power. It is possible to identify the fault by the gradual appearance of the problem, and also by the soot on the silencer.
Failure of the cylinder and piston group
As a result of scoring on the walls of the piston, the rpm problem in question may occur. It is common to find scoring on the muffler side. As a rule, this failure is solved by replacing the cylinder head, the cost of which can be comparable to the price of the saw itself.
Why the chainsaw won’t pick up speed. causes and solutions
Starting the gasoline chainsaw engine is a multi-level procedure, during the performance of which almost all units of the tool are actuated. One of the first signs of a chainsaw motor malfunction is that the engine doesn’t rev up. It can manifest itself in different ways: the engine may run erratically at idle, or not pick up the required revolutions when loaded. That is, when the throttle trigger is pulled. In any of these cases, you need to disassemble the tool and carefully inspect its internal structure.
Failures that can cause the chainsaw to stop revolving are
Top Reasons Chainsaw Starts, Then Stalls — Chainsaw Troubleshooting
- engine failure. The first thing that can happen is wear of the motor, that is, its final depletion. This will be evidenced by numerous scuffs and burrs on the surface of the parts of the cylinder head, deformation of the crankshaft or through breakdowns in other parts. In this case, the only thing that can help is to replace the motor, which is tantamount to buying a new chainsaw;
- a violation of the settings in the carburetor. if the steel jets on the fuel assembly were displaced, they will need to be set according to the instruction manual;
- Oiled or faulty spark plug. The first thing to do is to clean the spark plug of dried engine oil. If that didn’t help and the saw still won’t start, the spark plug needs to be replaced.
When you’re cleaning the spark plug, you want to be extra careful not to damage the tip. It is responsible for creating the spark needed to ignite the fuel.
The chainsaw won’t start or stops: the main causes
Before we move on to examining the causes and repair of chainsaw malfunctions, you need to figure out if you’re starting your chainsaw right. After all, it is because the tool does not start correctly that its engine stalls or does not start at all.
Every user is familiar with situations when the chainsaw does not start or stops without obvious breakdowns. the reasons for such its behavior may be different, but in general, it is well known to specialists of “Udachnaya Technika Service” workshops, which also supply spare parts for the vacuum cleaner karcher.
The general list of the most common malfunctions that cause malfunction of a Champion, Partner or other brands of chainsaw gasoline engine is quite large. The most common of these depending on the external signs of improper operation of the equipment:
STIHL chain saw, Carver, etc. does not start.д.:
- lack of fuel mixture in the tank or its low quality (substandard fuel or oil, wrong proportions);
- critical level of contamination of the air or fuel filter
- No spark in the spark plug.
Makita chainsaw, etc. stalls at idle speed:
- soot on the spark plug pins;
- ignition module malfunction;
- Incorrect settings, clogged or worn carburetor components;
- the muffler is excessively contaminated.
Hitachi chainsaw, etc. Stops when you press the gas:
- insufficient volume of fuel mixture;
- dirty filters, jets or other carburetor parts;
- breather plugging;
- Wear of gasoline pump;
- soot in muffler.
Any brand of chainsaw does not hold rpm under load and stops:
- engine crankcase or carburetor leaks. air in through worn seals or gaskets;
- failure of carburetor adjustment;
- A common reason why a Husqvarna 137 or 142 chainsaw stops is the air pulse hose between the engine crankcase and the fuel pump becomes damaged;
- Wear of the parts that make up the cylinder-piston group is the most unpleasant and costly fault of a chainsaw.

Your Chainsaw Stalls? You Can Fix It, Here’s How
Husqvarna chain saw stops at idle speed
Builders, assemblers, rescuers and countrymen. they take up a chainsaw when they perform their tasks. And how firmly the myth tool works, to a large extent depends on the final outcome of their activities.
A chainsaw is used to cut wood.
It should be noted that the chainsaw belongs to relatively light devices. But it, just like other machines, breaks down from time to time. When drowning chainsaw, working at idle speed (one of the most common defects), the greatest difficulty. to find the causes of such behavior devices. If the source of the disease will be correctly identified, to return the machine to work will not be so hard.
So first we need to know what are the faults in a chainsaw, and what causes the motor to stop idling.
To be able to answer the question why the saw, at times capricious, stops rotating at idle, it is necessary to mean that in the basis of this tool there is a usual two-stroke gasoline engine.
Hence the conclusion that malfunctions are caused by different problems with the main components of at least any engine: fuel and lubricants, the ignition system, the quality of air-fuel consistency and compression inside the cylinder.
The main engine malfunctions include the following:
- the engine will not start;
- Starts up, alas, working unstably, rapidly throttles at idle speed;
- the chainsaw works fine at idle, alas, under load it stops.
The assumption of idling disorders will be different. However, they can all be reduced to a few common positions. What it will take, to the malfunctioning of the internal combustion engine leads to such difficulties as:
Probable clogging of fuel and air filter;
Chainsaw will shut down at idle if the fuel or air filter is clogged. To find out the condition of the first element of the fuel system, disconnect the gasoline line from the carburetor. If fuel is being pumped in doses that do not comply with these standards, you should look for the cause of the problem wherever you are. If the fuel does not flow to the carburettor or does not come out of the hose at all, the filter is probably clogged.
To clean it, it is removed from the tank (from the tank before the fuel must be drained what remains to do our customer). It is extracted through the filler neck of the tank using a wire hook. The filter becomes disconnected from the intake hose. if possible, the filter is cleaned. If there is no such capability, or to put it another way, it is not practical for a number of reasons, the used filter is replaced with a new one.
The chain saw may stop if the fuel filter is clogged.
the air filter may be clogged with mud or dust and cause malfunctions at idle speed. It should be kept in mind that clogging of this filter is not uncommon and as a result the flow of air into the system is hampered. In the fuel-air consistency, the amount of gasoline increases, and it comes out unnecessarily enriched. You can not wait for the normal operation of the engine under such circumstances.
To clean the air filter is removed with special care so as not to shake out the dust in the carburetor. Then it is cleaned and thoroughly washed. A detergent is added to the flushing water. After drying the air filter is returned to its proper place in the chainsaw.
For normal cutting tool use it is recommended to change the fuel and air filter once every few months.
Usually it is recommended to change this main component at least once a year. Alas, it is not uncommon for saw operators to forget about this rule. There is therefore no reason to be surprised that a machine that is maintained in a fragmented manner ends up holding idle speeds poorly.
Change the spark plug once a year.
Therefore, it is necessary to find out the following faults related to the service of this accounting system:
- Plug is flooded with petrol when starting. To fix the problem unscrew the spark plug and even without burning, dry it. Through the hole-socket, in which the spark plug is screwed in, the excess gasoline is connected from the motor. After a break of half an hour, the spark plug is installed to the area, the mechanism is started.
- No spark because of the disgusting contact between the tip of the spark plug and the high voltage wire. The connection is checked and the defect is eliminated if there is a defect.
- No spark due to a defect in the electrical ignition unit. If you can be confident in the reliability of the connection with the spark plug high-voltage wire, alas spark when the starter is on as before no, then the cause of failure may be a faulty ignition unit. The component can not be repaired but must be replaced with a new one.
- Incorrect gap between the spark plug electrodes. In the different types of plugs this varies from 0.4.5 to 0.5 mm. The correct gap is determined by a feeler gauge of appropriate thickness. A larger or smaller gap is not allowed for this type of spark plug.
If you think during the initial inspection of the spark plug may find that the reason why the chainsaw refuses to work, not due to faults in the spark plug or other parts of the ignition plug complex.
Spark plugs of course tell us about the malfunction of the saw.
So, if the spark plug will be completely dry, it could mean that the initial problem lies in the inability of fuel flow into the combustion chamber. Check the whole petrol chain from the carburettor.
But the presence of dark-colored soot on the body of the spark plug is a sign that the carburetor is probably poorly adjusted. Because of that the fuel mixture appears to be oversaturated with gasoline. You, there’s oil in the fuel. Then it is necessary to clean the spark plug, change the fuel and adjust the carburettor.
If in practical use it turns out: the filters are untainted and the ignition system is not the fault in the cut, that the chainsaw is not able to run at idle speed, the owner of the tool is recommended to switch the attention to the carburetor.
Dismantle and assemble the carburetor should be without haste, because there are many parts without which it will not be able to work.
Often, the unbalanced operation leads to razregulirovanie this unit, which is responsible for the supply of the engine cylinder of a certain amount of air-fuel consistency. It can be adjusted by 3 special screws located on the carburetor: screws for higher and lower revolutions, and of course the screw that controls the idle speed.
Some manufacturers of domestic, fearing unnecessary interference unfamiliar ignorant people, cram their products with only one screw idle year. But in any case, adjustment of the carburetor is made, only accurately performing that remains to do our client the manufacturer’s annotations.
But even after the adjustment of the carburetor, according to the factory standards, this unit can malfunction. Then it is recommended to clean the fuel and air ducts, nozzles, filter element grid. If the diaphragm is ruptured, it must be replaced with a newer, high-quality diaphragm.
Engaged in maintenance and repair of the carburetor, you should always keep in mind that he is usually stuffed with lots of very small parts, without which the device simply will not be able to properly operate. Therefore, you should disassemble and assemble the carburetor without haste and with extreme care.
A chainsaw sometimes stops when idling also due to a breach in the integrity of the fuel line or because the ratio of the ingredients of the fuel mixture, consisting of gasoline and oil, is incorrect.
The chainsaw stalls at idle speed: this is a problem faced by many owners of this tool. The chainsaw is not a complicated tool by design. But there are times when it fails. The main problem in troubleshooting is determining the correct cause of the malfunction. Once the cause is established, troubleshooting is usually fairly straightforward.
The air filter is dirty
Finding out if the air filter is dirty is quite easy. You just need to take it off and start the chain saw without it. If it works fine, then it’s the problem and you just need to clean it, or change it, depending on what kind of filter you have. And don’t be afraid that the chainsaw will run for a while without dust protection if there is no dust cloud around you, you’re fine.
So removing the air filter. To do this, you need to remove the cover from the back top of the chain saw, which is attached or screws, or just a lock, which you just need to turn or unclip.
If the filter is working correctly after you have removed it after you have started the saw, the filter is contaminated.
The air filter may be a felt or nylon filter. The first resembles wool or sintepon, and the second looks like a fine mesh of nylon threads stretched over a plastic body. The felt one needs to be replaced with a new one, but the nylon one can simply be washed in soapy water, dried and put back in place.
And then we calmly use the chainsaw.
What kinds of faults can occur
Malfunctions of a chainsaw can be divided into groups:
- Malfunctions of the engine (ignition, exhaust and cylinder-piston systems, fuel supply).
- Malfunction of parts such as the clutch, chain brake, lubrication system, or tire.
Chain saw engine failure is the most common. It spends most of the time on its detection and repair. As a rule, it can be as follows: the engine doesn’t start, it fails to develop capacity, or stops working.
Before you start repairing the chainsaw, first check all the possible causes of malfunctions in its functioning, or better yet, watch the video. Fortunately, today you can find any interesting material on the Internet.
Then you’ll have to prepare the necessary tools to repair the breakdowns:
When the engine refuses to run, but there is a spark on the spark plug, and the fuel comes in, you should check the ignition.
It is not difficult to check it: unscrew the plug, and adjust the gap between the contacts, connect it to a wire and press it to the cylinder housing. After that, watch for a spark.
If any deviations occur, it is necessary to adjust the ignition system. In general, this process is similar to the adjustment of ignition in other two-stroke engines.
What to do if the chainsaw starts and stops
One of the most popular times to work with a chain saw is when the chain saw starts up and then stops. It can happen both with a new and with an “experienced” instrument, and there are more than enough reasons. The most common problem is a lack of fuel in the tank. It is not so important, what kind of saw you have, Chinese Husqvarna or original STIHL: if the fuel is not enough, it is the consequence of the problem in question. If it is not enough fuel, you need to increase the fuel volume in the tank by preparing a certain amount according to a pre-set ratio. How to do it. look in the instruction, there is also a brand of oil, which should be used. The interesting nuance with gasoline is that it should have the highest octane number, and its quality depends on it, and therefore the work of the saw itself.
For the sake of economy many saw users, and more often it happens with domestic brands Ural and Druzhba. do not drain the extra fuel, leaving the saw “to winter” together with it for many months. It is strictly forbidden to do it, firstly, for fire safety reasons, and secondly, in order to avoid a deliberate provocation breakdown of your tool. There are other situations when the owners of chain saws manage to add new fuel to the old one, forgetting about the lost qualities and the possible chemical reaction of this “rattle mixture”. You absolutely must not do this.
In addition to the fuel you should also check the spark plug. Remove excessive soot from it or replace it with a new one, check the contact with the high-voltage wire and if the gap is more than 0.5 mm, you must replace the spark plug.
For owners of popular brand Partner 350 saws and other lesser-known counterparts, which include Chinese products, it is important to approach the issue of a stalled saw very delicately, especially if it is warmed up. Do not rush to disassemble the whole construction, consult with experts. In addition to products that play a huge role in the very ignition and uninterrupted operation of the saw engine. at us you can order a chain for a chainsaw, which is the main cutting element of the entire structure.
Why does the chainsaw engine stop when you press the gas button?
Despite the high performance of chain saws, sometimes there are moments when the tool stops working properly. In particular, a common situation is the fact that the chainsaw begins to stall when the gas is pressed. For seasoned tool owners such a problem is known, but for beginners who encountered it for the first time, they will have to seek help from specialists. But we should not be in a hurry, in the material you can find all the important causes of failure, and try to eliminate them.
Why does the chainsaw immediately throttle and bangs when you press the gas
Chainsaws are fairly reliable and uncomplicated designs. Therefore, if you properly care for them and treat them according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, then they fail very rarely and rather quickly eliminated various kinds of failures. But if you are faced with this situation and you want to repair your tool without the help of professionals, then please read the information below.
In fact, it is impossible to uniquely and accurately determine the cause of why the tool does not start or stalls when you press the gas, as there are many factors affecting this. But do not forget that based on the fact that gasoline-powered saw is equipped with a simple two-stroke engine, for its effective performance are important conditions such as: lubrication, fuel, spark and air.
Chainsaw fuel tank
Consequently, the carburetor is directly responsible for preparing the fuel-air mixture, the filter cleans the air from dust, the ignition unit and the spark plug create the spark, and the gasoline contains the lubricant.
That is why it is necessary to search for the causes of this kind of failure in a sequential order, starting directly from simple and then gradually proceeding to complex. And this is an important factor in proper repair, because the person who, without thinking, begins to disassemble the carburetor, puts it at risk of. Since this kind of unit should be repaired or adjusted directly at specialised workshops (read about adjusting the carburetor).
It is important to know that in order for the tool to work properly it is necessary to be attentive enough to the fuel itself. Because if this kind of mixture will not be prepared correctly, then most chain saws simply will not start. Consequently, not every owner would think to look for the cause of failure in the fuel. That’s why it is necessary to use only high-quality gasoline to make your tool work properly at all times.
Use only oil that is made by the manufacturer of your tool. In addition, it is important to prepare this kind of mixture in the amount that you exactly use in one or two weeks, but no more (see “The mixture of the right type”). The first thing to do is to change the spark plug (see gasoline and chain saw oil ratio).
Otherwise, overholding the mixture directly in the can will cause it to lose all its octane properties and this will lead to significant problems with the tool.
Pouring the mixture when the mechanism is running
Also the cause of failure may be a direct pouring of the mixture at the time when the mechanism is running. In order to solve this problem it is necessary to unscrew and dry the candle, but remember that you must not heat it in any way. the surplus fuel must be drained through the hole (plug), wait 20-30 minutes and then put it back in place and try to start the tool again.
There is no spark and the chainsaw does not rev up
The chainsaw stalls when the gas is pressed because there is no spark. It can happen when there is no good contact between the spark plug boot and the cable (high-voltage wire). However, if this kind of connection works correctly, but the spark is still missing, then the ignition unit (electronic) is the cause. It is important to note that these kinds of parts are not repairable, so they can only be replaced.
Inspection of the spark plug
Don’t forget that through the inspection of the spark plug, you will be able to get significant information regarding the breakdown of the chainsaw. Since if its surface is dry, it is caused by a cylinder that is not directly supplied with fuel. That’s why you have to check the whole range of its supply step by step. If the candle is all black soot, it means that the carburetor is not working properly, that is, it either supplies a lot of fuel, or overflows oil directly into the gasoline.
There is not enough fuel to feed and operate the chainsaw to its full capacity
If the chainsaw stops when you add gas, it means that the fuel is not getting enough to make the chainsaw work properly. The reason for this may be both clogging of the carburetor (its nozzle) and contamination of the filter (fuel filter). Remember that the first part should only be checked by a professional, but you can clean the second one yourself.
The filter is dirty
In addition, the filter (air filter) can cause damage if it is contaminated with dust. But do not forget that each model has its own easily removable and characteristic features. That is why do not hastily start to disassemble and repair the tool, but it is better to “walk” through forums, where a huge number of reviews of various owners, so as not to make things worse.
Because the reason why your STIHL chain saw fails on the gas for example is simple, and that is because the breather hose is clogged.
In order to fix this kind of problem all you need to do is to disconnect the hose (fuel) from the carburetor and pay attention to the fact whether the fuel flows out of it. Since if the mixture flows in a full stream, it means that the breather is not contaminated, and if vice versa, then the cause of the breakdown is found.
Muffler as the reason the saw stops on load
That’s another reason why a chainsaw stops when you press the gas. the muffler. This is the part that can interfere with the full performance of the tool when it is contaminated directly by exhaust tar deposits. For that you just need to clean it.
The cylinder piston group
Quite often chainsaw Partner stops on pressure and the cause of this is the cylinder piston group. Because by inspecting them, namely the piston and cylinder, it is easy to find the cause of the problem by replacing the piston and cylinder. You can also do a direct boring of the cylinder itself according to the size of the new piston.
But if, upon inspection, you find that both the piston and the cylinder have no damage, in which case the cause may lie directly in the rings (piston). To check this, you need to put a piston in the cylinder and gently rock it with the crank. If you feel any play, then the rings need to be replaced because they are already worn out.
Insufficient chain lubrication prevents the chain saw from starting and does not rev up
Many people wonder why the chain saw stops when I press the gas? The answer may also lie in the lack of chain lubrication (see: chain oil for chainsaws). The answer may also lie in inadequate chain lubrication (see chain oil for chainsaw chain), because the oil pipe may be leaking, or the direct channels may be clogged. That is why pay attention to the chain, because if it is dry, do not hesitate to clean the channels that are engaged in feeding the oil directly to the bar of the tool.Then examine in detail the parts where the oil pump connects to the tubes. But if you notice that the oil leaks in the joints, or you find cracks on the tubes themselves, then in the first case, seal the leaks with sealant, and the tubes will have to be replaced.
Check and Repair Filters
The engine may malfunction or choke if there is not enough fuel or air. Causes of a clogged air or fuel filter. In order to check fuel filter it is necessary to take off petrol pipe from carburettor connection and direct it into some container. Then press several times to pump the fuel. If the fuel is pumping normally, in well-defined doses, without dirt, the fuel filter is in good condition. If the fuel flows weakly or does not flow at all the filter should be replaced or if possible cleaned.
Sawdust clogging the fuel filter is one of the reasons the chain saw breaks down.
The device should be removed from the fuel tank (firstly all fuel should be removed). In most models, the fuel filter can be pulled out with a wire hook through the throat. If the filter is collapsible and can be cleaned, you can disassemble and wash it as recommended by the manufacturer. If not, change it for a new one.
Similar problems may occur if the air filter is clogged with dust, sawdust, dirt. If there is not enough air the fuel mixture will be enriched and the combustion process will be hindered.
For check remove the filter. Care must be taken to prevent dust from entering the carburettor during operation. The machine should be cleaned and rinsed in warm water with detergent. After drying out if possible blow it off with compressed air of low pressure and put it back. If the chainsaw works normally, then the cause is eliminated, if not, you need to look further.
How To a Fix a Chainsaw that keeps flooding and dying at idle and bogs on throttle acceleration
With constant use of the tool, replacement of the fuel and air system filters is recommended after 3 months.
