Cleaning before painting is designed to maximize paint adhesion to the substrate. Polypropylene has two problems associated with its operation in hot water and heating systems.

  • When heated, the tensile strength of the pipe decreases. Reinforced polypropylene is used in heating systems.

It can be done in two ways:

  • By adding chopped glass or basalt fibers to the polymer melt. The middle reinforcement layer of the pipe is already fused with the unreinforced layers of pure polymer during the extrusion process;
  • By sandwiching between two layers of polypropylene a layer of aluminium foil approximately 0.5 mm thick. The quality of an aluminum-reinforced pipe strongly depends on the manufacturing technology and the glue used in the process.

The type of reinforcement can easily be determined by looking at the shear layers.

Typical operating pressure of reinforced pipes is 25 atmospheres (this is indicated by the designation PN 25 in the marking). When heated it is reduced to 10 12 kgf/cm2. Elongation when heated also appreciably decreases:

Steel pipe elongates by 0.5 to 0.55 mm under similar conditions.

For obvious reasons, foil-reinforced pipes are most in demand in heating and hot water supply. However, an unpleasant surprise awaits the lucky buyer: aluminum forms a galvanic pair with copper and steel, which are often present in heating and DHW circuits.

The small thickness of the foil causes it to deteriorate due to electrochemical corrosion upon contact with water in just 2 to 3 seasons. As a result of its destruction, the pipe at the end, inside the socket fitting, begins to delaminate, with the accompanying process of catastrophic loss of wall strength. A relatively weak water hammer or noticeable heating ends the career of such a pipeline prematurely.

The obvious solution to this problem is to remove the aluminum reinforcing layer from the welding area. Stripping of polypropylene pipes is the preparation of the end of the pipe for soldering with a fitting, which boils down to cutting foil from the surface of the pipe (in the external reinforcement) or between two layers of polypropylene (in the internal).
