Diluting gasoline with chainsaw oil
How much gasoline to mix with chain saw oil?
At the heart of any chainsaw is a two-stroke internal combustion engine. Its performance, reliability and durability depend on the fuel used, as well as regular maintenance.
One of the essential differences between two-stroke chainsaw internal combustion engines and four-stroke engines, such as automobile engines, is the need to add oil directly to the gasoline for the chainsaw in the gas tank, not in a separate oil system. It is very important to strictly observe certain proportions of gasoline and oil, otherwise chain saw failure is unavoidable. Oddly enough, but this rule is not observed by all. Many owners of chain saws are beginning to experiment with the proportions or do not fill the lubricant in order to save money. As a result, there are serious problems that are more expensive to fix than just buy lubricant.

Oil for chain saws
Many domestic and foreign manufacturers specialize in the production of special engine oils, but the highest ratings have brand-name products STIHL, Husqvarna and Makita.
Only in some parameters the branded range is inferior to the domestic motor oils of the Lukoil brand.
The list of advantages of brand motor oils includes:
How to mix fuel for chainsaw
- economical consumption;
- stability of performance in difficult operating conditions and prolonged storage;
- minimal amount of toxic compounds in the exhaust gases;
- virtually no fouling; and.
According to the American classification, it is possible to use oils of category API-TB for work in household and professional models. Japanese analogue. JASO-FB and JASO FD. Categorically exclude the preparation of combustible mixtures with the use of oil for 4-stroke engines.
The red, green or any other color of the oil defines whether the product belongs to the range of a certain manufacturer, so it is not taken into account when defining the characteristics of the material. Exercise extreme caution when selecting an engine oil of unknown composition and origin.
Until more information is received on the quality and performance parameters, it is better to temporarily refuse to use such material.
It is allowed to mix motor oils of the same composition and purpose, produced by brands known for the quality of their range. Mineral and synthetic oils should never be mixed.
How to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw
For normal operation, any internal combustion engine needs at least two things:
- Fuel. or rather, the fuel-air mixture, prepared by the carburetor, enters the combustion chamber, ignites, expands, and “pushes” the piston down, due to which useful work is performed.
- Lubrication. is necessary for reduction of friction force between the contacting engine parts.
First of all you need oil to avoid so-called “dry” metal to metal friction. It causes critical wear on the parts in contact. scoring, scratching, compression loss, and shortened piston life. Oil is also needed to seal the gaps.
Why is it necessary to mix oil with chainsaw fuel??
This requirement is directly related to the peculiarities of the device and principle of work of two-stroke engines, which this tool is equipped with.
Lubrication of the crank mechanism parts and the cylinder-piston group here is performed solely by the oil in the fuel. Due to the special structure of the engine, the fuel-air mixture enters not only into the combustion chamber, but also into the crankcase, where the crankshaft and connecting rod are located. This way you lubricate all the rubbing parts.
The oil to petrol ratio, or how to memorise the proportions
The most correct ratio of gasoline to oil is the value specified by the manufacturer.
If you bought a chainsaw, then do not be lazy to open the manual, and find the recommendation from the manufacturer. how much oil per liter of gasoline to mix into the chainsaw. These recommendations are present in the technical documentation for the machine. But many people often lose the instruction, so they have to ask their acquaintances or the Internet for help.
If you do not know how much oil to add to petrol when preparing fuel, then you should use universal data. Such data provide the following ratio. 1 to 50 or 1 to 40.
What does it mean?? Let’s understand this in detail.
The ratio of 1:50 means that you need 20 ml of oil per liter of gasoline. The ratio “1 to 40” means to add 25 ml of oil to a liter of petrol. Why two universal values are specified? Everything depends on the time of year, so if the tool is operated in summer, then 20 ml of oil per 1 liter of gasoline is added, and if in winter, 25 ml. It is easy to remember this ratio, and you can use a marker to mark it on the plastic tool body. See the table below for the ratio of oil to gasoline for chain saws. Ratios of 1 to 35, 1 to 30 and 1 to 25 are suitable for power tools.
How to choose chain oil for your chain saw
In addition to the motor, the chainsaw has another important component with many moving parts. the chain. Chain oil is not engine oil, but chain oil for chain saws. it is cheaper and has completely different properties.
How to mix your own fuel for STIHL chainsaws & equipment
How much chain oil to use depends on the “age” of the chainsaw. If your chainsaw is new and under warranty, you should ONLY use brand-name oils recommended by the manufacturer. If they don’t, they will take it out of warranty immediately if the chain saw breaks down.к. Using lubricants that do not meet the manufacturer’s requirements is a violation of the conditions of use. Branded oils, on the other hand, are really quality oils:
- allow you to operate in a wide temperature range from.30 to 50 C,
- High adhesion improves oil “sticking” to the chain and reduces oil consumption;
- additives reduce friction and extend chain life.
If your chain saw is not under warranty and you can’t afford to buy brand name chain oil, you can use any type of gear oil or engine oil. It is advisable to change it twice a year: use thicker oil in winter and thicker oil in summer.
What kind of oil to lubricate the chain of a chainsaw also depends on the wood to be worked with. For dry wood we recommend gear oil, for damp wood it is better to use some kind of oil for diesel engines.
What chain oil for chainsaw chain?
Every modern chainsaw has 2 tanks, in the first of which is filled with fuel mixture, and in the second. with oil for chain lubrication. The quality of both compounds determines the service life of the main parts and assemblies of chainsaws.
Quite often in stores they offer a ready-to-use chain oil for chain saws from the manufacturer of the garden tools. This product does not contaminate the environment and does not lose its properties at low temperatures.
Readymade chain oil can also be substituted with another lubricant. The main thing is that it must not be used. Also, you should not use car oil, because it has different properties than a specialized product. Employees of warranty service centers recommend purchasing ready-made oil or diluting the composition on the basis, which is specified in the chainsaw application manual. If these notes are missing in the instructions, you can buy any quality synthetic or mineral oil.
Compound on synthetic basis is better, as it doesn’t contribute to soot deposits on chainsaw cylinder. At the same time, such oil is always more expensive than mineral lubricant.
What gasoline to fill in a chainsaw?
The principle of stable operation of any internal combustion engine is based on its fuel consumption. In the case of gasoline saws, it is the factory brand gasoline AI-92. It is used for all power units whose operating scheme initially consists of 2 consecutive strokes.
Some chainsaws, mostly Soviet-made, are designed to consume gasoline AI-76 and AI-80.This is due to the fact that in the days when these garden gasoline tools were produced, you could only find this fuel at gas stations. Over time gasoline AI-76 and AI-80 has been overtaken by the higher-quality fuel AI-92.
Nowadays it is almost impossible to find fuel that is outdated by its characteristics and composition. Nevertheless, Soviet gasoline-powered saws continue to run stubbornly on 92 gasoline, showing no less efficiency and productivity in processing any kind of wood.
Lubricants and fuels
Engine manufacturers recommend using high-octane gasoline AI-92, 95. Do not use fuel with various additives to increase the octane rating. During this time it may undergo tarring and polymerization, which negatively affects the performance of the engine.
We do not recommend the use of gasoline that has been stored for more than 60 days
Most chainsaw engines are equipped with leaded gasoline. If you purchased the tool with a catalytic converter (the tank cap will be green) we recommend unleaded brands of gasoline.
Important: Do not skimp and use gasoline with an octane rating below 90. it is also not recommended to use gasoline with a higher octane rating than 95. This leads to premature wear of the engine piston group.
Air-cooled two-stroke motors are not designed with a separate lubrication system. The moving parts are lubricated by the oil in the fuel mix. That is why it is essential to use high-quality oils from reputable manufacturers.
Recommended oils for chain saw lubrication:
- STIHL HP. developed specially for chain saw engines. Proven excellent in all weather conditions, ensures perfect engine performance.
- Husqvarna HP is an oil from a well-known manufacturer of gardening equipment. Special additives reduce fouling of the engine crankcase, which can occur due to the use of low-quality fuel.
- Oleo-Mac Prosint 2T. multifunctional oil with synthetic esters. Protects engine parts from corrosion, reduces the wear of mechanisms and parts.
- Champion JASO FD. a quality oil from a famous company. Provides good protection for all moving engine parts;
- Vitals Semisynthetic is a multigrade oil for low-end models of chain saws, suitable for use at temperatures from.20°C to 45°C.20 to 40C 0.
Important: do not use mineral, semi-synthetic or synthetic car oils. They are designed for a different type of engine and do not have the necessary properties.
Chainsaw fuel mix: how much oil to use per liter of gasoline
Any petrol engine can only function properly if the operating rules are observed and the correct fuel mixture is prepared. This feature also applies to chainsaws. How much oil per liter of fuel to use for refueling and how to properly prepare fuel, let’s consider in detail.
