Gasoline to oil ratio in a chainsaw
In order to keep the right proportion of gasoline and oil you can use the calculation chart on the body of the saw. Branded containers from leading engine oil manufacturers are equipped with built-in measuring devices that ensure precise oil dosage for different volumes of fuel mixture.
Measuring utensils are included in the factory set of many models of chainsaws of the budget category. In some cases, to dilute the gasoline with oil in a given proportion will help medical syringe volume of 20 cm3.
Why chainsaws need to be filled with a mixture of gasoline and oil
Why it is contraindicated to fill the tank of the unit with gasoline without oil, and what will happen if you make a mistake? The reason for the need to dilute gasoline with oil is hidden in the fact that two-stroke motors do not have an oil chamber, as on four-stroke devices. The absence of this chamber leads to the fact that the rotating and rubbing metal parts of the engine do not receive lubrication, so the following disadvantages are observed:
- The friction force increases, resulting in faster wear and tear on the parts.
- The temperature rises due to the friction force, which also negatively affects the service life of the internal combustion engine.
- The load increases, so there is a significant loss of power and performance.
Oil is added to the gasoline of a chainsaw in order to prevent the development of the above-mentioned processes. If you fill the tank of the machine with pure gasoline and start the engine, in a short period of time it will simply overheat and seize. That’s why when buying a tool, it is important not only to find out how to start and work with a chainsaw, but also to understand the ratios of gasoline to oil connection.
Oil for chainsaws
Mainly API-TB grade oil is used for chainsaws widespread in our country. API-TC can be used a little less often, but only if the information is indicated on the package by the manufacturer. There you should also know how much oil should be added to petrol. API-TC class is used for chainsaws with lower loads.
The above oil grades are classified by the American Petroleum Institute. There is also another well-known Japanese company that also defines the power classes of lubricants. For chain saws we recommend to use JASO-FB and JASO FD oils in petrol.
It is important to note that using oils used in four-stroke engines on two-stroke engines is categorically impossible.
This is because in the second case it is important that the lubricant burns out completely. This can be achieved by using synthetic oil, which emits less smoke and produces less combustion residue. Before diluting the fluid, you should always pay attention to the chainsaw manual, which should specify the types and brands of all consumables that should be used on the device.

Alternative fuel option
For refueling domestic and professional chainsaws it is recommended to use a gasoline of AI-92 type, which does not contain alcohol components and additional additives.
The question of whether or not you can put 95-percent gasoline in a chain saw has been debatable up to now. Theoretically, the anti-detonation properties of gasoline AI-95 are higher than those of standard fuel AI-92, but in practice it is better to give preference to the second option.
The problem is that in order to improve the anti-detonation characteristics of the 95th gasoline, producers and sellers introduce additives, the quality and effectiveness of which raise reasonable doubts among specialists.
Such fuel does not fully meet the required characteristics, does not have proper stability during long storage. After 3-4 months of use, its performance deteriorates by 25-30%.

How to adjust the oil flow in a chainsaw chain?
In case of wrong adjustment of oil supply to the chain, the chain may overheat (insufficient supply) or overflow and contaminate the wood with oil (too much supply). That is why adjustment of oil supply to the chainsaw chain is a very important process, as both oil consumption and long term operation of the chainsaw itself depend on it.
How oil is supplied to the chainsaw chain depends on the position of the oil pump plunger adjustment screw. Screw is set in middle position by factory. To decrease oil flow, turn it to o, to increase. to o.
Is it possible to fill a chain saw with 95?
In almost every instruction manual you can find the manufacturers instructions that you have to use gasoline with constant octane number not higher than 92 to fill up your power tool regularly. In spite of that, many beginning gardeners keep filling up their saws with 95o rd gasoline, thinking in vain that it’s better than 95o rd.
It is necessary to remember that engines of all foreign and some local tools are originally designed to run on gasoline 92. If you fill the fuel tank of the tool with 92 gasoline, it will cause the piston to jerk in the opposite direction, which is often called detonation. This dangerous process will become cyclic, and will be repeated with every revolution of the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine. Probably needless to say that the use of 98 gasoline will have an even worse effect on the piston and engine condition of the chainsaw.
What kind of gasoline to use?
It is better to use AI-92 gasoline for modern chain saws. It is better not to use 95-th. Firstly, it is because the saws are tuned to work with 92-m petrol. Secondly, 95th gasoline is made by adding special additives to gasoline with a lower octane number. And as experts say, it is not good.
In general, fill the 92nd gasoline and you will be happy. Just do not stock it, because in the long months of storage its octane number is falling.
They say (they say)!), that our refineries can only produce pure 80th gasoline. And now with the help of additives it is upgraded to “92” and “95”. There is naturally more additives in 95th. So, if stored for a long time, these additives “evaporate” and gasoline becomes 80th again. Whether it’s true or not, I do not know, but I learned this information back in 2009, at one of the seminars on servicing gasoline equipment from the head of the service department in Russia, one of the manufacturers of gasoline equipment. If this was true, then maybe as of today (2018) the situation has improved.
In any case it is better to buy gasoline at a gas station that you have already filled up and everything was all right.
How to prepare a Fuel Mixture: Proportion of Oil and Gasoline for Gasoline Saw
The chainsaw engine is the “heart” of the tool, that’s why it is very important to use correct fuel mixture.
Gasoline is a mix of two components. oil and gasoline. Chainsaws are equipped with two-stroke engines, so oil is not added to the lubrication system (as with a four-stroke engine), but directly to the gasoline. It is very important to observe correct proportions of ingredients and, of course, in no case trying to work with pure gasoline, because that way you will “kill” the chainsaw very quickly.
The oil must be intended for two-stroke engines of gardening and forestry machinery (i.e. you may by no means use the oil for outboard motors or scooters). As practice shows, such oil can be purchased at any store or service center, where chainsaws are sold or serviced.
If we talk about what gasoline to pour into the chainsaw, it will be optimal to use fuel with an octane number of A-95, in this case, the savings on fuel can turn out badly. Often European manufacturers indicate that you can use gasoline A-90 or A-92, but in post-Soviet countries the quality of gasoline is inferior to European, so in our reality it is better to use a higher-quality gasoline.
As for the proportion of gasoline-oil mixture itself, then everything is simple: you must clearly follow the instructions of the tool. All chainsaw manufacturers indicate the required ratio in the instruction manual or in the tool’s certificate, moreover, the proportions for filling the chainsaw may differ depending on the model of chain saw. As a rule, the ratio of oil and gasoline in a chain saw from reputable manufacturers is 1:40 or 1:50, which means 1 part oil in 40 parts gasoline, for example.
Now the arithmetic: 1 liter of gasoline = 1000 ml of gasoline, divide by 40 and you get 25 ml of oil. If you do the same for a 1:50 ratio, you get 20 ml of oil for 1 liter of gasoline.
With regard to low-priced Chinese-made chainsaws the situation is a little different. gasoline to oil ratio for chain saw made in China 1:25, so 1000 ml of gasoline divided by 25, you get 40 ml of oil. the reason is that branded chainsaws have a solid build and the distance between pistons and cylinders in the engine is much less than in Chinese-made chainsaws, that’s why the required oil amount is twice as much different.
To measure a correct portion of oil, use an ordinary medical syringe of sufficient volume.
Correct Way To Mix Gas and Oil For a ChainSaw, WeedEater etc.
Another tricky part. in a dry gasoline canister, pour gasoline first, then oil. The procedure on the contrary is fraught with low quality fuel mixture, because oil is denser, it will stick to the bottom of the canister. That’s why there is no way to mix it well.
Be sure to prepare the fuel mixture in a canister and fill the gas tank already ready special fuel! Never prepare and mix it directly in the gasoline tank of your chainsaw!
If the question of how to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw is solved, then and about fuel mixture storage conditions and expiration dates worth saying a few words. It is best and easiest to prepare gasoline-oil mixture for 1 liter of gasoline, it is recommended to do it immediately before working with the tool. Gasoline tanks on chain saws have a capacity of 0.3 to 1 liter. For home use, it is rare to use the entire volume of the fuel mixture in one go, and the remainder can be kept for the next use. The fuel mixture should be stored in a special gasoline canister in a dark, dry place. It is optimal to calculate that storage time of the ready mixture will be 7-10 days
The fact that the oil on the market now is not synthetic, but organic, that is, natural. After 10 days all lubrication properties are lost, gasoline simply “eats up” the oil. Naturally, you can no longer use such fuel, it can cause a breakdown and failure of the chainsaw.
At the end of work, it is necessary to drain the fuel mixture and start the chainsaw. the tool will stall (so that the saw has a dry carburetor) and now you can leave it until the next session of operation.
Preparing fuel mixture for chain saw
Gasoline must have at least an octane rating of Ai-92. It is possible to fill in AI95, but its quality at our gas stations leaves much to be desired, therefore if you are not sure of the quality of the 95th, it is better to take AI92 gasoline for gasoline dilution in a chainsaw. You should also avoid taking gasoline which has stood in a can, tank or any other container for a long time. Gasoline for the gasoline mixture in a chainsaw must be fresh, otherwise it loses its properties, in particular the octane number, and even if you run a chainsaw on such fuel, it will not give full power. And the saddest thing in this case is that a chain saw fails because of low-quality fuel is considered a non-warranty case and leads to costly repairs. Sometimes it’s easier to buy a new chain saw than to repair it after such a breakdown!
