How much oil to put in the air filter on your power tiller?
What is the difference between two-stroke and four-stroke oil?
Some types of engine oil are for four-stroke power units, while others are for two-stroke. They are not interchangeable, and they should be poured according to their intended use Lubricants for motors with different duty cycles have different requirements. For example, oil for four-stroke high-speed engines, which use a forced lubrication system, is designed for prolonged exposure and is designed to provide a more stable coating of parts. In two-stroke engines oil comes with fuel and should dissolve in it instantly, burning smokelessly with minimum soot and ash deposits. Therefore, a characteristic feature of two-stroke oils is their good purification and minimal aggressive additives. They, unlike the four-stroke fluid, do not contain ash, anti-seize and antiwear additives. This enables them to burn almost completely with the fuel without producing soot and causing toxic exhaust emissions.
The peculiarity of oils for four-stroke engines is a great number of metal-organic additives, which are aimed at improvement of their physical and mechanical properties and increase of their efficiency. And if you pour such a mixture into an engine with a two-stroke cycle, it will lead to the formation of ash deposits on the piston surface and combustion chamber walls. Increased accumulation of deposits, in turn, can provoke the appearance of various troubles, which can only be eliminated by doing complex and costly repairs of the motor, power tiller or motobucket. There is also soot in the air filter and piston ring grooves if the wrong petroleum product is used. Accumulation of soot is fraught with loss of ring mobility, which is a direct way to a decrease in engine power of a power tiller, its operation deterioration and even complete failure.
How to service and clean the filter of a power tiller
Servicing of engine air filters on your power tiller should be done according to manufacturer’s specified maintenance intervals or as needed, if the machine is operated in dusty conditions.
Check the air filter after every 5-8 hours of operation. Clean the air filter after operating for 20-30 hours (replace if damaged).
However, air filters of some models of power tillers are in oil bath. in this case you need to pour oil to the level indicated on the oil bath.
- What oil to fill in the air filter of your power tiller?? For this purpose it is recommended to use the same engine oil that is filled in the engine crankcase.
According to the generally accepted standard, engine oil for 4-stroke engines is used in the engine of the power tiller, as well as in the air filter.
Depending on the season and ambient temperature you can fill the engine with seasonal oils of brands 5W-30, 10W-30, 15W-40 or multigrade engine oils with a wider temperature range.
Let’s consider the sequence of works on maintenance (cleaning) of the engine air filter of the most popular in Russia and former CIS countries motor-block of MB-1 model range:
- Remove the air filter cover by loosening the wing nut;
- Remove the porous air filter element (it is made of foam rubber) from the main paper element;
- Wash foam precleaner in gasoline, kerosene. If it is not heavily soiled, you only need to wash the air filter of your power tiller with a normal detergent. After that you should gently squeeze the foam rubber and dry it;
- Soak the porous element in engine oil, squeeze the excess oil slightly between two hands. Never twist the foam pad. doing so could damage the filter element;
- Remove the dry engine air filter element;
- Rinse the dry element first in soapy water and then in plain, lukewarm water. Paper filters are also good to clean with a vacuum cleaner and a light tap on a hard surface;
- Thoroughly air dry the dry element. There is no need to impregnate it with anything;
- Remove any dirt on the filter housing with a clean cotton cloth;
- Reassemble the air filter in reverse order, put the protective cover back on.
- How do you know if the air filter needs to be replaced?? This will be obvious either by its appearance or by the behavior of the engine.
If the filter element has changed in size (from frequent washing in gasoline the sponge swells with time) or damages have appeared on it, it is necessary to replace the filter.
Why does the air filter in your power tiller fill up with gasoline??
Very often the owners of power tillers with a 4-stroke engine face such a problem. gasoline gets into the air filter, and the engine does not start. There may be several reasons for such an unexpected phenomenon.
The easiest. a clogged filter (because of dirt it loses its flow capacity and causes a lean mixture). To determine this, you need to remove the air filter and try to start the engine without it.
It is not uncommon for the motoblock filter to fill with gasoline due to a faulty needle shutoff valve in the carburetor.
In this case the level has increased, and the fuel gets into the filter through the air ducts of the idling system. Fix the problem by repairing/replacing the needle valve.
Remember that only by treating the appliance with care can it work efficiently and economically!
What oil to put in the air filter on your power tiller?
When buying a single-axle tractor, you want to be sure that it will last a long time, diligently and perfectly performing its functions for our customer. Certainly, the quality of the unit. a very important nuance in the choice of power tiller. But it is worth keeping in mind that timely and proper servicing of the mechanism is the key to its longevity and performance. No machine will serve you faithfully if you do not take care of it, timely changing consumables, tightening the right nuts, checking the oil level.
Any owner of a motor-block wondered about the oil change for the motor-block. I want to do it by all the instructions, so that the upcoming work of the machine without failure and problems. What we will need, in our article we will talk about what oil to use and how to change the oil in the motoblock.
First of all let’s consider 3 basic questions about oil for a diesel motobloc with a water cooling system:
1) how to fill and check oil level in engine crankcase
4) How to fill and inspect the oil level in the gearcase
3) How to fill oil in the air filter.
Checking oil level in the engine crankcase
First, you need to set the single axle tractor on a level horizontal surface. Next, you need to clean the surface around the throat for pouring oil into the engine crankcase (in the picture below you can see where it is located).
Power tiller air filter cleaning ll Greaves power tiller ll Deshi Kishan
After that. Unscrew the cap. dipstick for filling the oil and pour the required amount of oil with a watering can. With the dipstick you can easily check its level. To do this, wipe the dipstick dry, stick the plug in the filler neck without screwing it in, remove the plug and make sure the oil level is between the minimum and maximum marks. The illustration below shows the correct way to work the dipstick.
Servicing and modification of the air filter on your power tiller /motractor.
If you check the oil level on your power tiller while the engine or gearbox is hot, wait a couple of minutes after you stop. This will allow oil to drain back into the crankcase and check to see if the oil level is correct.
Fill in oil or check the oil level in the gearcase
With the single axle tractor on a level, horizontal surface, clean the gearcase near the plastic filler plug located under the steering bracket and near the control hole bolt located on the right side of the gearcase.
Then loosen the bolt on the oil level plug. When, if oil starts to leak from the hole, it means its level is normal. If oil is not leaking, it must be at the correct level. Unscrew the oil level plug, open the plastic cap on the oil filler cap and use an angle funnel or a flexible hose to fill the oil until it comes out of the oil level plug. Now tighten the oil level plug, close the filler cap and wipe any oil leaks from the gearbox housing.
What kind of oil to put in the air filter?
To fill the oil bath of the air filter, unscrew the wing nut of the filter cover, remove the filter element from the pan, pour 100-150 of engine oil into the pan (by level mark on the oil bath housing), install the filter element together with sealing rubber bands and the filter cover, fix it with the wing nut
Please note that the engine should NOT be started without the air filter installed, also with the filter without the correct amount of oil. This will inevitably lead to increased wear of the machine!
The oil used in the engine and air filter is for diesel four-stroke engines with water cooling. When changing to another type of oil the oil must be of SG, SF or higher quality. Choose engine oil with viscosity-temperature grades according to SAE. Based on our natural temperature you may use 5W-30, 10W-30, 15W-40 or other oils with wider temperature range. To find the right oil for you, look at the chart below.
To reduce the wear of mechanical gears and prevent scuffing of friction surfaces in the gearbox fill transmission oil TAP-15, TAD-17 or similar properties, for example oil series TM GOST 17479.2-85. For which the design is designed to operate a power tiller in winter, you need to use winter or all-season gear oil.
Now let’s talk about the general principles and rules of changing the oil for your power tiller and checking its level.
The first time you need to change the oil for your power tiller is after 5 hours of operation. This rule should not be disregarded, since after the assembly of the unit in his motor inevitably remains different debris, dust, small foreign bodies, which, getting into the oil, there are variations contribute to jamming the motor immediately after the start of his work. This will definitely lead to malfunctions of the engine, which you can avoid by following the rule: change the oil a couple of times after 5 hours of use of the engine, and a couple of times after you change the oil. after 10 hours of work. It is not difficult to prevent the motor from malfunctioning and to clean it from various impurities.
After this, so-called, break-in, motoblock, you should change the oil, as indicated in the annotation to the unit. This is usually done after 25-50 hours of operation. If you do not have the annotation or is not marked here, as it should do, then you can effortlessly find the moment without the help of others. Carefully observe the color of the oil. If the oil is dark. change it immediately and try not to bring it to such a condition. Also consider your power tiller‘s operating conditions.
In order to change the oil in your power tiller more correctly and efficiently, the engine must be warmed up. Do not forget to prepare a container in which you can pour out the used oil. Now we have to find out how to do this function.

A single-axle tractor with a hot engine should be tilted slightly and a container should be placed next to it. Next, you need to unscrew the drain plug of the motor and drain our customer stays oil in a prepared for this purpose container. It is necessary to screw in the plug and pour the new oil into the engine. It happens that the engine is not equipped with a drain plug. Then you have to drain the oil through the oil filler plug.
Remember that changing the oil in your power tiller frequently extends its service life. Don’t forget that the oil needs to be inspected, especially if your assistant is working hard and often. No matter if the single axle tractor worked 25-35 hours in one season, you must change the oil at least once a year. It is better to squeeze out unused oil than to be greedy and try to work with old oil after half a year of machine idle time. Oil tends to oxidize, which increases the inevitable deterioration of its properties. And that means it will handle the functions even more horribly.
Changing the oil in a single-axle tractor is not complicated. There are several points on which you should definitely focus your interest.
The single axle tractor should be tilted. The measuring, fill and drain holes are always on the left side of the machine. The old oil is drained out through the drain hole, closed with a cork.
The capacity of the container for drained water must be more than 3.2 л. Remember: as much oil you refill, and as much you pour in. But the best oil for the motor-block with a viscosity index 10W40: synthetic or mineral. This oil is recommended by the domestic manufacturers of agricultural machinery.
No one can give you an exact quote: when to change the oil in your power tiller. You will be able to use your machine actively or operate it only periodically. So watch this question only for you. Already today if you use a single axle tractor in winter. carefully examine the winter oils for the engine. Even if they have a higher price, but they can save your machine from breakdowns.
As we now understand, there is nothing difficult in the process of changing the oil for a power tiller. For you, it is only necessary to keep in mind that the state and the oil level should watch, change the oil, very little, once a year and use a benign factory fluid. We hope that our article was useful to you, and you figured out how to change the oil for a power tiller. Read also these other articles about agricultural equipment on other topics.
What Oil to Pour into the Air Filter of Motobloc?
In order to ensure safe and trouble-free operation of the compact tractor over a long period of operation, maintenance of its components and parts must be performed in accordance with the rules.
It is not only about timely oil changes in the nodes of the engine unit, regular inspection of engine systems and adjustment of control mechanisms, but also about timely maintenance of the air filter.
How to clean Power tiller air filter
Why do I need an air filter in the power pack?
Cultivator engine air filter cleans the air that enters the carburetor. When the filter element is filled with dust and dirt, its flow capacity is lost, resulting in a lean mixture. This leads to engine damage.
Note! Dirty air filter not only complicates engine starting, but also leads to a loss of power of the cultivator and increased fuel consumption.
If the filter is damaged or missing, it can damage the unit.

Most domestic and foreign power tillers have an air filter made of polyurethane foam (foam rubber). These filter elements reliably protect the carburetor and engine from dust and sand.
This is especially important for cultivators because tillers and plows pick up large amounts of soil and sand during operation.
Regular foam filters are easily washed with gasoline, are fairly durable and relatively inexpensive (about 200-300).
Regardless of engine manufacturer and brand, timely engine air filter maintenance extends the life of the equipment.
How to hold and clean the air filter
Cultivator engine air filters should be serviced according to the manufacturer’s service intervals or, if necessary, if the equipment is operated in dusty conditions.
We recommend you check the condition of the air filter every 5-8 hours of operation of the cultivator. The air filter should be cleaned after 20-30 hours of operation (if damaged. replace).
The old oil must be drained out through the drain plug. The oil drain hole must have a capacity of over 3.5 cubic inches.2 л. Keep in mind: as much oil as you have drained, so much more should be poured in. And the best oil for power tillers is viscosity grade 10W40: synthetic or mineral.
The filter works as follows: when the engine crankshaft speed increases, the swift air flow passing through the filter hits the oil surface in the oil bath, catches and carries oil droplets into the packing, moistening the capron threads.
The inertia-oil filter consists of a housing with an oil bath, a cover, an air inlet and a filter element made of synthetic material. When the engine is running, air passes through the annular gap inside the housing and hits the oil surface.
The air filter cleans the air from mechanical impurities in the engine supply system. For proper combustion of air-fuel mixture, it must contain 15-20 times more air by weight than fuel.
Changing the oil in the engine
Before using a new lubricant it is necessary to find out what kind of oil the single axle tractor was previously filled with.
Important! Mixing of oils will soon knock out the engine of an agricultural machine.
Oil composition ideally should be of the same type and from the same manufacturer that has already been poured into an internal combustion engine. As research by the Central Research Institute has shown, even mixing the same kind of lubricant does not go without a partial loss of its properties. You will need to change the lubricant for the first time after the machine has fully rolled in.
Here is a brief instruction on how to pour oil into a single axle tractor:
- The first step is to warm up the engine;
- the old composition is drained out, a suitable container is used for this purpose;
- once finished, wipe the elements of the power tiller with a dry, clean cloth;
- Pour the lubricant to the required level, usually this is almost a full container;
- Check the oil level with a dipstick or wire;
- Clean the filler opening with a cloth and close it.
If there is no bottom drain, it is necessary to remove the lubricant through the filler hole. The fluid needs to be changed after idle time, after repairs with replacement parts, and after increased engine load.
Reference. After the procedure, it is advisable to check the spark plugs for wear.
Servicing the power tiller
Servicing of your power tiller consists of performing a number of tasks to ensure trouble-free and safe operation of the machine during its entire service life. Such work includes changing the oil in your power tiller, checking and preventing engine systems, adjusting control mechanisms, taking care of tires, etc.п.
the single axle tractor must be kept free from dirt and level, supported with the third wheel (if present) or with a support to stabilise the machine.
- Oil level in engine crankcase, gearbox, clutch.
- Reliable tightening of screw connections.
- Condition of safety devices.
- Tire pressure.
The service intervals are determined by the manufacturer according to the properties of the components and materials used in the power tiller. Approximate operating hours, upon reaching which the power tiller should be serviced and adjusted, are given in the Service table below.
|Work to be carried out||After each use||After 5 hours||After 25 hours||After 50 hours||After 100 hours or once a season||If necessary|
Clean your power tool and parts
Checking the air filter
Replace the air filter
Checking spark plugs
Replace spark plug
Change oil in the engine crankcase
Change oil in gearbox and clutch
Lubrication of control cables
Adjusting the clutch cable
Adjustment of V-belt tension
- Checking oil level in engine crankcase, its regular replacement.
- Ignition system maintenance (check and replace spark plug, check clearance between ignition coil and ignition coil).
- Fuel system maintenance (system tightness control, fuel and air filter cleaning, carburetor adjustment, etc.).).
Engine parts may be hot when running or at a standstill, so be careful not to touch them with bare hands to avoid burns.
Engine lubrication system. If single axle tractor was purchased without oil in engine crankcase, fill it up when getting ready for work. Gasoline engine oils with the required viscosity according to SAE and API classification are used for engine lubrication. Check your power tool operator’s manual for specific oils. SunGarden recommends to use for your power tool oil of grades SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL, SM according to API (S stands for “four cycle petrol engines”) or SAE following the chart below.
Selection of oil viscosity according to ambient temperature (SAE classification)
- Unscrew the oil filler cap.
- Unscrew the oil drain plug.
- Drain the oil into the container beforehand (10-15 min).
- Screw in drain plug.
- Fill to desired level with oil (Check level with dipstick).
- Screw in the cap.

Ignition system. Engine blocks usually have a non-contact electronic ignition system consisting of a magnet wire built into the flywheel, an ignition coil, a high-voltage wire, and a spark plug. The distance between the ignition coil and the ignition coil is set at the factory and does not usually require adjustment. Maintenance of your power tiller in this case comes down to checking the condition of the spark plug. Every 25 hours of operation. the spark plug is set at the factory and normally does not need to be adjusted or replaced. After 100 hours of operation.
To check or replace the spark plug, remove the spark plug wire cap and use a spark plug wrench. Check the spark plug for carbon deposits and measure the gap between the electrodes with a feeler gauge. Depending on the spark plug brand, the latter should be about 0.8 mm (different manufacturers give different recommendations). If there is soot deposits, the spark plugs must be cleaned. Also check the condition of the spark plug threads and the spark plug skirt. If it has damage (cracks in the housing, frayed electrodes, bruised threads), replace the spark plug.
The clearance between the magneto and ignition coil must be checked on some power tool models. The figure below shows the clearance adjustment diagram for the Cascade MB6. The required distance between the ignition coil 1 and the magnetic shoe 3 is set by loosening the screws 2 and shifting the coil relative to the flywheel.
Starting mechanism and ignition system of Cascade MB6: 1. starter knob, 2. fan housing, 3. Protective cover, 4. cylinder, 5. cylinder head, 6. magneto, 7. flywheel.
Air filter. The air filter cleans the air that enters the carburetor. When it is contaminated, the qualitative and quantitative composition of the fuel mixture is disturbed, resulting in engine malfunction. condition of air filter must be checked every 5 hours of engine operation. After 50 hours of operation, the filter should be cleaned or replaced.
To clean the air filter, it is necessary to remove its cover, remove the filter element (there may be several of them) and clean it. The cleaning technology depends on the filter material and is described in the manual. Paper filters can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and a light tap on a hard surface. Foam filters should be washed with water and some household detergent and dried.
The air filters on some models of power tillers are in an oil bath or soaked in oil. In this case, after cleaning the filter, soak it in oil again or change the oil in the filter housing.
Carburetor. The first adjustment of the power tiller carburetor is made at the factory. Some power tiller manufacturers do not mention in the manuals about the necessity of carburetor adjustment at all, wishing to protect this delicate and capricious mechanism from interference of inexperienced users. Those manufacturers who provide this option limit their recommendations to the idle speed adjustment, the procedure of which is described in the instruction manual. The essence of any idle speed adjustment is to get the engine to operate steadily at minimum rpm. Adjusting the carburetor on your power tiller based on the manual for a different power tiller (engine) may cause engine damage.
- Unscrew oil filler plug (with dipstick).
- Unscrew the drain plug and drain the oil into a suitable container within 15 minutes.
- Screw in oil filler plug.
- Fill the gearbox of your MotoBlock with clean oil up to the required level (check with a dipstick).
- Screw in the filler plug.
V-belt drives. Adjust the belt tension every 25-30 hours of operation of the MotoBlock. belts are replaced if they are broken, cracked to the depth of the carrier layer, loosened by more than 1/3 of the belt length and the tensioning mechanism cannot compensate for belt lengthening.
Filling up the powerpack
The octane rating of the gasoline used should be that specified in the owner’s manual. If you buy an imported power tool, it is generally recommended to use gasoline with a higher octane rating than 92. Fuel should be filled no higher than the bottom edge of the neck, too full tank can lead to leaks and the risk of fire.
Before each start-up, the machine is checked for fuel leaks. If leaks are detected they must be repaired.
To start your power tool
- Open the fuel cock and wait 2-3 minutes for the carburetor to fill with gasoline.
- Put the throttle grip in the middle position.
- Close the choke (if the engine is cold). When starting a warmed up chain saw it is not recommended to close the choke completely.к. this can cause the fuel mixture to over-enrich and the engine to fail to start.
- After making sure the motoblock is stable, slowly pull on the cable until the engine begins to perform a fuel compression cycle (at which point the cable will provide a little more resistance). Now pull the starter rope in a quick, continuous movement with your whole arm’s length. Hold the starter grip and let the rope slowly coil up again. Do not let the starter grip hit the starter.
- If the engine fails to start, try again with the choke open. If the engine does not start after the second attempt, wait 2-3 minutes for the carburettor to fill with petrol and repeat the attempt with the choke closed and the choke open alternately.
- After starting the engine, open the choke by turning its lever counterclockwise as far as it will go.
- Set the throttle lever to low revolutions and warm up the engine in this mode for 2-3 min.
If you have started with the choke closed more than twice and gasoline is dripping from the carburetor, close the fuel cock, open the choke and pull the starter cord five to seven times. After starting the engine open the fuel cock and turn the engine off to warm it up.
To stop the engine, move the throttle grip to the STOP position as far as it will go. Close the fuel cock.
Storing the motorblock
- Clean the single-axle tractor of contaminants.
- Drain fuel from the tank and carburetor.
- Drain the oil from the crankcase.
- Unscrew the plug and fill the engine with 20 g of clean engine oil. Plug the hole with a rag and turn the crankshaft several times, then replace the spark plug without putting on the spark plug cover.
- If storing for more than 3 months place the single axle tractor on a jack stand with the tires off.
For gearbox and clutch oil, manufacturers’ recommendations may vary. Some recommend draining the oil when putting your power tiller in storage, others. change it for fresh oil.
How much oil to put in the air filter on your power tiller
Engine maintenance consists of a series of works that ensure the smooth and safe operation of the machine during its entire service life. Such work includes changing oil in engine components, checking and preventing engine systems, adjusting control mechanisms, caring for tires, and more.
The off-road tractor should be cleaned of dirt and mounted horizontally, supported by a third wheel (if installed) or on a support that ensures the stability of the machine.
Each manufacturer sets its own hours of service based on the characteristics of the components and materials used in an engine. Approximate operating hours, after which engine maintenance and adjustments are performed, are given in the table below.
Parts of an engine that is running or has recently been shut down can be very hot, so be careful not to touch them with your bare hands to avoid getting burned.
Engine Lubrication System. If you have purchased a powerpack without oil in the engine crankcase, it must be filled at startup. For engine lubrication, motor oils are used for gasoline engines with the required viscosity according to the SAE and API classifications. Specific oil grades are listed in the owner’s manual of the engine unit. Specifically, SunGarden recommends using API, SF, SG, SG, SH, SH, SJ, SL and SM oils for the engine unit (the S symbol indicates that the oil is for four-stroke gasoline engines) or based on the SAE classification as follows.
The first oil change in the crankcase is done after 2-5 hours (different manufacturers specify different times) of the engine block. In the future. according to the instructions (normally after 25 hours). The oil is changed on the warmed up engine (this will ensure good oil flow when changing the oil) in the following order:
- Oil filler cap open.
- There is a drain plug.
- Oil is poured into a pre-installed reservoir (10-15 min).
- Drain plug is screwed in.
- The oil is filled to the proper level (the level can be checked with the buttons).
- Cap is closed.
For example, on a SunGarden walking tractor, you should pour oil into the engine crankcase up to the bottom edge of the oil filler neck.
Ignition system. Motor blocks usually have a non-contact electronic ignition system, which consists of a magnet wire built into the flywheel, ignition coils, high-voltage wires and spark plugs. The distance between the magnetic circuit and the ignition coil and the ignition torque are set at the factory and usually do not require adjustment. Maintenance of the engine unit in this case is to check the condition of the spark plug. every 25 hours of use. Replace them every 25 hours. After the engine block has been running for 100 hours.
To check or replace spark plug, remove high voltage cable cover and unscrew spark plug. Check for carbon deposits and check the electrode gap. Depending on the brand, the latter should be about 0.8 mm (different manufacturers give different recommendations). If there is soot, the spark plug is removed. Check also the condition of the candle thread and the candle skirt. If there is damage (cracks in the housing, worn electrode, damaged threads) the spark plug must be replaced.
