With porcelain tiles only a core bit or drill bit with a carbide tipped, ideally diamond tip will manage. Because of the highest strength, when working with this material it is necessary to cool the drill and the work surface with water. Where to cut the hole?

Another important question that will arise no matter what material the sink was purchased: cut a hole in it from the front after installation? Or do it before installation and from the back side?

Each method has a number of pros and cons:

  • In the first case the edge on the front side will be even flatter, but there is a possibility to spoil the front side of the sink with the drill, and if it has a narrow edge, then to split the edge.
  • In the 2nd option, the risk of destroying the bowl is even lower, but with all this there is a possibility of getting a sloppy edge of the hole on the front side. This is almost always not critical, because the edges of the hole are locked by the faucet. When turning it, it is possible to unintentionally make a hole on the wrong side, so it is better to mark the side on which you want to install the mixer.

In either method, it is better to position the hole away from the edge of the piece, but in all cases, without touching the bowl. To do this, before the work, you need to put the bottom nut of the mixer to the sink and mark its center.

The ratio between the amount of resin and the stone chips may be very different. Regardless of the proportions, this material lends itself better to drilling than stone. However, you should still be careful and cautious. A sink made of artificial stone must be treated with care: no work should be done until its temperature is equal to room temperature.

Conical diamond drills are similar in appearance to standard metal drills, but the work surface has a layer of diamond grit on it. Thanks to the sintering technique, it is possible to obtain a tool with high wear resistance. Diamond grit on the work surface is applied in 2.5 vacuum-diffusion process, and the space between the diamond particles is filled with metal, ensuring high durability of the coating.

How to drill an acrylic sink

Drilling technology of acrylic or quartz agglomerate sinks, other types of artificial stone based on acrylic resins is the same. It is very important to determine where to drill.

It is necessary to mark the place of drilling, having attached the bottom nut from the mixer and having determined the center of the hole. The tap hole is positioned no closer than 50 mm from the sink and the edge of the countertop.

Drill the artificial stone must be strictly perpendicular. To prevent the drill from shifting, you can put masking tape on the surface. so it will be less smooth and slippery. On the drill should be turned off percussion mode. The cutter can be moistened with water. Work at medium to low speed. How to drill a hole in a “stone” sink? We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: a “stone” sink is a sink made of quartz (may also be called granite), or marble, or kitchen ceramics, or whatever was under your feet and was in the way

It is considered luck that marble and granite are perfectly drillable with the same drill bit. With a diamond cutter (i.e.е. with diamond dust on the perimeter) with a guide drill. It is best to drill at speeds up to 1000 rpm., which corresponds to half the pull of the trigger of the drill. You can use water cooling for “wet” drilling, but in our experience this is not necessary. Which side to start drilling the sink from? Especially for punching holes in stainless steel sinks in all stores respecting customers there is a special hydraulic puncher. Not very complicated, but rather expensive heavy gizmo made of special tool steel, which is able to cut through a layer of stainless steel up to 1 mm. Sometimes in tool stores or IKEA you can find a special cutter that presses through the sink with an ordinary drill hole 10 mm. Some craftsmen have told of the successful use of the “Fostner drill” on stainless steel at low speeds. But if all this special equipment is not available to you and you urgently need to put the tap on the sink, you can very precisely mark with a marker on the sink those projections where the hoses and the stud are included in the tap and make three holes with an ordinary drill of 10-15 mm. on metal (one for each of the hoses and the mounting stud). By the way you get a much tighter connection than with the usual squeeze out of a 35 mm circumference. It is important that you attach your faucet with a stud and not a wide nut, otherwise this method will not work. For faucets on the nut there is the loudest, longest and most boring way to install: nail the contour 32-33 mm and drill holes with a thin drill. Then you have to bite out the crosspieces and grind burrs with a file. Drilling a hole in a granite sink by yourself

Gone are the days when the vast majority of people had enamel sinks in their kitchens. Today, everyone can install sinks of different materials depending on the interior of the kitchen designed by the designer. However, such “permissiveness” can cause difficulties if you, in addition to the standard mixer, wish to install additional equipment (filters or water purification systems, detergent dispensers, etc.).

Especially it concerns mine, which are made of natural or artificial materials (granite, porcelain, ceramic, stone and so on). The high hardness and brittleness of these materials presents a certain difficulty in drilling, especially if you have decided to make the necessary hole yourself.

In order to drill a hole in a granite sink you will need: a manual drill, a carbide or diamond drill bit, a pobedite drill bit with a diameter of 6. 8 mm, a lubricant-coolant and a “sprayer” which can be made from a bottle of household detergent. As a cutter, at home you can use a diamond or bimetallic “crown”, which can be purchased in construction or tool stores, and as a cooling lubricant, it is desirable to use unisor or emulsol. If you can not buy these liquids, you can use soapy water. And, actually, the kitchen sink itself. I bought a GRANFEST F-12 model in black.

On most models of brand sinks, on the back side, there are a few small indentations, which will help us avoid alignment of the future hole. Choose a place for the equipment you are going to install according to the operating manual of the equipment you are going to install additionally.

Take a drill with a diameter equal to that of the cutter or head, drill the hole. Important: The drill bit has to “swim” in the cooling lubricant. This is necessary for several reasons: 1. You do not need to drill with excessive force. 2. This way you can save on the sharpening of the drill bit and thus extend its service life. 3. Finally, it will help to avoid unnecessary heating of the granite sink itself and thus prevent its destruction.

Once you have drilled the hole, turn your sink over and mount the drill bit or core bit in the drill and start drilling to your desired diameter. Needless to say that the diameter of the cutter or crown must be equal to the installation diameter of the additional equipment. All modern faucets and soap dispensers have a 3.5 cm hole. It is necessary to drill a hole with a drill bit or head from the front side, because it is almost impossible to determine the last seconds of drilling and to reduce the load on the drill in time. Do not forget that even at this stage of drilling you need to “fill up” the tool with your coolant. Unlike drilling a hole with a drill, you should not put too much pressure on the drill.

As a result of the last phase of the work, you should have a peculiar bagel, which will show that you have not distorted the drill while drilling and performed your task well.
