How to Cut Fibreboard at Home

How to cut fiberboard at home?

The easiest tool for cutting PVC. But an unusual kitchen knife or a shoemaker’s knife, only a molar’s knife is needed.

Its blade, while new, is very thin and sharp. And when the blade gets blunt, it can be replaced in a moment. By biting off a part or inserting a new. An ordinary knife is inconvenient. It can’t be sharpened quickly. Also, it won’t be as thin.

The molar knife is limited. It can only be used to cut a panel lengthwise. Of course, you can try to make the cut across. But nothing good will come of it.

How to cut the panels lengthwise? It’s hard to explain within the limits of the article. But it is possible to describe the basic principle.

The blade extends a short distance of 3 mm.

On the back of the panel, we choose the place where the cut will be made.

Then cut a strip, from rib to rib (we are talking about the inner ribs of the panel). A cut is made near the rib, then another cut is made near the neighboring rib. We make the cuts along the whole length.

A strip of plastic falls out, a groove is formed.

Then from the same back side you need to make a shallow cut near the desired rib. And to break the body on it.

The molar cutter has the following advantages: it is fast, quiet and easy. It has the disadvantage that you can only cut panels lengthwise.

Tools for cutting and mechanics of their work

If we do not take into account stationary machines for sawing, there are not many alternatives for manual work. From available tools you can offer circular and reciprocating saws, commonly referred to as trimmers and jigsaws. It is also possible to make a fairly high quality cut with an angle grinder, on which a wood saw blade with teeth made of pobedite is installed. But these are not the most effective and, in addition, far from being safe.

When cutting with any type of power tool, working parts move at very high speed, and therefore the mechanics of machining remain as if behind the scenes. However, understanding it is the key to obtaining a clean edge without chipping. The simplest principle is the operation of pendulum saws. Cutting is performed with a straight motion of the saw blade, and the size of the removed fragments depends entirely on the size of the tooth and its approach.

Chips occur due to the heterogeneity of the material to be processed, in particular due to the hard crust of laminated sheet materials or because the fibers of solid wood have different densities. Chips can form on either side of the product, depending on the shape of the tooth, the feed force and the speed of the tool. With a jigsaw, chipping is caused either by the teeth tearing out large chunks from the backside or by the overcutting of the top layer, which breaks out in large chunks rather than cutting them off.

The teeth of the circular blade work much like a jigsaw, except that their movement is strictly in one direction, and they move at a very high speed. Also a significant factor is the direction (angle) of the applied force: if the jigsaw moves strictly perpendicular to the surface, the circular saw cuts at an arbitrary angle, depending on both the diameter of the disc, and the thickness of the part. This can play into the hands: the oblique plunge of the tooth contributes to a more accurate cutting of chips, but on the reverse side because of the movement of the cutting edges tangentially can tear out quite large fragments. Of course, with a circular saw you can only make a straight cut.

The electric jigsaw option

As already mentioned, what is used to cut fiberboard depends primarily on the size of the plate. It will be easy to cut (saw) sheets of any size with the jigsaw. For this we need the jigsaw itself and a saw with fine teeth. It is desirable to opt for a jigsaw for metal. It has small prongs and not much bifurcated to the sides, which means that the edge of the cut organolith will not be strongly rasped on the “fringe”.

Place the board on a flat surface. This is an obligatory condition, because if the tight bond between the surface and the plate will not be, cut will turn crooked, because the plate will vibrate when working with power tool, and no about any smooth cutting in this case and can not be talked about. At the same time press the fibreboard onto the surface. Then the seam will be even and there will be no burrs, as well as no edge mottling into “fringe”.

After the sawing is perfect and the desired part (billet) is sawed, its edges are deburred with a file or emery board. Everything is ready.

How to cut fiberboard properly?

Fibreboards are available in various thicknesses, thin fibreboards (up to 3 mm thick) can be cut with a knife, thicker boards should be cut with a saw. The requirement for hacksaws is not a large tooth size. You can also use a hacksaw for metal (the right tooth when cutting will not tear the edge of the fiberboard).

The easiest way to cut chipboard at home. Use a fine-toothed carpentry saw. That will make it possible to cut evenly and get a quality material with the needed dimensions. Move smoothly, avoid sharp movements, press directly on the board carefully.

What is the best way to cut chipboard??

Anything. With any woodworking tool designed for sawing: a hand saw (for both wood and metal), electric or standard jigsaw, circular saw, router. Fiberboard. Material is equally strong, so it can be sawed equally in either direction.

  • Milling machines. The material is cut mechanically by grinding the edge with a rotating file
  • Laser. Fiberboard is cut with a high energy beam concentrated on a small area
  • Circular saw. The boards are cut with a circular saw in a straight line: lengthwise, crosswise or at an angle.

Roughing the floor

Roughing floors are mounted with fiberboard quite often, especially suitable this material for leveling old plank floors, if the work on their dismantling is not expected. In addition to obtaining as a result of a perfectly flat surface, a layer of fiberboard will serve as a good insulator, which is especially important for residents of private houses or first floor apartments in older apartment buildings.

Unplanked hard wood-fibreboard or soft wood-fibreboard as a soundproofing underlay can be used for the underlayment. Despite the abundance of hydrophobic additives in the manufacture of modern fibreboards, experts advise additional processing before laying. Impregnation with hot oil in 2-3 layers gives good results. After complete drying, the sheets can be laid.

The Fiberboard Floor is ready for further processing

If the old substrate for the floor is fairly even, the organolith is laid directly on it. In case of big differences in level (more than 10 mm) it is necessary to level the old floor or to lay the beams. In any case the surface for laying the fiberboard is first treated with antiseptic primer.

Cutting fiberboard

Many modern companies that sell building materials, offer their customers wood-fiber board cut to individual dimensions when buying. Special high-precision equipment is a guarantee that the work on cutting the material and processing the edges will be made qualitatively, without chips. In this case, your main task will be to accurately make all measurements. If you are so unlucky, you will have to cut the fiberboard at home yourself.

In principle, a hand saw with a fine tooth will also be suitable for this work. Fine irregularities in the sawing area are irrelevant for laying the material as a subfloor. For a significant amount of work, it is much faster and easier to cut fiberboard using the following devices:

  • An electric jigsaw or circular saw, preferably with a laser guide;
  • Saw blades of a special brand, suitable for cutting virgin fiberboard;
  • scaffolding with a slope of 20-25% of the vertical, allowing you to fix a sheet of Fiberboard in a large format;
  • metal ruler
  • marker.

If you have to cut fiberboard for the first time, so as not to spoil the material, first practice on a small piece, setting the jigsaw saw to the right of the marking line. Beforehand, be sure to familiarize yourself with the techniques of experienced craftsmen, for example, by watching thematic videos, one of which is presented below:

How to lay fiberboard?

If you intend to lay linoleum after the Fibreboard installation, the floorboard must be laid with the back side facing down. In other cases, the corrugated surface will provide better adhesion Wood-fiber board with finishing materials, so it is turned up.

Installation usually begins from the corner opposite the front door. Mount the fibreboards using special staples, nails or screws or glue them with mastics. Before nailing or gluing, the sheets try to fit together with a minimum gap to putty the seams was easier.

By the way, caulking gaps near the walls is not necessary, on the contrary, be sure to leave technological gaps that will allow the fiberboard to “play” without deforming during expansion with temperature fluctuations.

The easiest way to cut fiberboard when bypassing a heating pipe is with a regular knife. accurately, such work can be done using a specially created template made of thick cardboard, using an electric jigsaw.

After laying Fibreboard, if you plan to finish the floor with linoleum or paint, the joints must be sealed. In addition to having high adhesive properties, the mass, which will be putty fiberboard must be plastic, as the floor of fiberboard is somewhat springy and capable of changing its linear dimensions. If you putty the floor hard and monolithic putty, it can either bend and deform the sheet fiberboard, or tear itself at the joints.

How to cut fiberboard quickly?

Sawing plywood with an angle grinder cutting OSB with an angle grinder is safer and better with the right disc. The ideal tool is the so-called three-toothed woodblade, which is designed for high rotational speeds. It will be a plus if the angle grinder has a speed controller.

Sawing the chipboard at home If you do decide to saw the chipboard yourself, prepare a saw with very fine teeth or, even better, prepare a jigsaw. The coarse-toothed blade gives you the flattest, most accurate cut possible Particleboard.

Cutting panels at home

It is possible to cut a particleboard or laminated chipboard sheet by hand. You can hardly avoid chips and burrs, but you can try to reduce their number and size.

There are a few rules to follow when cutting chipboard panels:

  • the sheets should be cut on a flat, hard surface. For sawing large panels, you can adapt two large tables (their height should be the same!);
  • To avoid chipping, put masking tape or good masking tape on the cutting line, which will hold the edges of the laminate layer;
  • For sawing with a hand saw choose a blade with a fine tooth. The teeth of the saw should be well sharpened. Drive the saw with light pressure, at an acute angle to the surface, constantly controlling its position;
  • to cut particleboard and laminated particleboard using an electric jigsaw, the saw trimmer line should be scratched or even cut through. It is best to use a sharp knife to cut through a tough layer of laminate;
  • Set the saw with a fine back tooth;
  • select the maximum speed of the jigsaw, turn off the “pendulum”;
  • fasten a flat rail along the cut line and guide the jigsaw strictly along it;
  • The jigsaw should be pressed firmly against the surface to be sawed.

All these recommendations help to saw and cut the chipboard correctly, but it is still impossible to avoid chipping completely. Therefore, if it is so important to get a perfectly smooth, flat line for trimmer cut, without chips and traces of the saw, you should apply to specialized workshops, where you for a modest fee from a sheet of chipboard cut any shape.

What to cut fiberboard: recommendations of craftsmen

Fiberboard (or fiberboard). the material is not too thick. But if you start sawing it with a hacksaw there will be such “fringe” that any accuracy is out of the question. Are there any other methods? What do craftsmen use to cut fiberboard? How do they make the cut even and accurate??

Options for cutting (sawing) the fiberboard

Actually, there are many options. Most often a tool for sawing is selected in accordance with the scale of the work. The most commonly used tools (in the home) are:

  • electric jigsaw;
  • Manual circular saw;
  • A knife with a sharpened tip;
  • metal scissors;
  • A manual hacksaw with fine teeth.

It is clear that large workpieces will be difficult to cut with a hacksaw. Similarly, for relatively small workpieces it is inappropriate to use a circular saw. Metal scissors can be used only when it is not necessary to preserve the structure of the edge of the sheet Wood-fiber board in its entirety, because of the impact of the cutting parts going for a break, on the edges of the board may diverge cracks. Let’s understand how to cut fiberboard in more detail.

The option with the jigsaw

As already mentioned, what is used to cut fiberboard depends primarily on the size of the sheet. It will be easy to cut (saw) any size of sheet with a jigsaw. For this we need the jigsaw itself and a saw with fine teeth. It is desirable to settle on a saw on metal. Its teeth are small and not too bent apart, which means that the edge of the cut organolith will not be strongly rasped on the “fringe”.

Install the board on a flat surface. This is a prerequisite, because if there is no good adhesion between the surface and the board, the sawing will be crooked, because the board will vibrate when the power tool works, and no smooth slicing in this case is out of the question. At the same time you must hold the Fibreboard against the surface. Then the seam will be straight and there will be no burrs, no rasping of edges on the “fringe”.

The handheld circular saw option

When asked what is used to cut fiberboard, the first thing that comes to mind after the jigsaw is, of course, the circular saw. Also good if you have a lot of felt to cut. Several boards can be sawn with it at a time. But it breaks the board’s edges even more than the jigsaw blade. That’s why sometimes craftsmen use for sawing fiberboard not with ordinary wood sawing discs, but with discs for angle wood grinders. They are great with circular saws, and in this case the edges of the cut are more even. With a little sanding them with sandpaper, they cannot be distinguished from the factory cut.

But here too, a straight surface is a guarantee of a correct and even cut. If such will not be, as well as if during the sawing process, do not press the board to this surface, vibration simply will not give to make an accurate cut.

Option with a knife

How to cut fiberboard, so that the edge of the workpiece is the most even and intact? Here, without a doubt, the best tool is a knife. Of course it will be more time consuming because you have to work with your hands, but the end result is worth it. But this cutting method is only suitable for small chipboard and laminated wood.

In order to cut fiberboard with a knife, you must again lay the board on a flat surface. But it is not necessary that the edge of the cut part of the board overhangs the edge of the worktop surface where you want to cut. First a marking is made with a simple pencil, and then a ruler is attached to the marking, pressed very firmly and firmly to the surface of the board, and the first cut is made along the marked line. When the first groove is made, the work goes on more cheerfully.

By cutting the material deeper and deeper into the board, it finally breaks through in one tug. You can also lightly sand the edges of the workpiece along the edge with a fine sandpaper, and the result will be excellent.

The version with the metal scissors

This is the most aggressive method, when the accuracy and quality can be neglected in favor of speed. Here you do not have to worry about any flat surfaces, just do not lift the board too much when cutting, otherwise it could crack badly. To bring the edges of the workpiece back to normal after this cutting, you will have to do a lot of work with the rasp and emery board.

The variant with a hand saw

If there are no power tools handy, and the work plan is too big for a knife, you can use an ordinary fine-toothed wood saw. It is certainly better than cutting fiberboard with scissors for iron. And it is much faster.

Among the preparatory operations, again, the preparation of an even surface with an even edge of the countertop itself. When the surface is, on it lies a marked sheet of fiberboard, we explain how to properly cut the sheets Fiberboard in half with a hacksaw. If we really cut the sheet in half, it is necessary to have a partner who will support the other edge of the sheet Fibreboard, or we need a second tabletop that will not let this edge sag and go to a break (as well as in the previous cases with the jigsaw and circular saw).

The cutting line of the hacksaw trimmer should be at a very sharp angle to the surface of the sheet. This is necessary so that there will be less “fringe”. Yes, and the accuracy of sawing will be higher. When the sheet is sawn in half its edges are also cleaned with an emery, and that’s it. The process is completed.
