How to cut the LED strip at 220
Tips on how to cut the LED strip: more than 10 tips
In order to understand why the LED strip is heating, we must consider the conditions of its operation, method of connection, and other factors. First of all, you should study the data sheet and find out the operating temperature of the product. There are LEDs, which during operation are heated to 100 ° or more, it is normal and is a feature of the design. However, such elements are rarely installed on LED tapes. As a rule, they are designed to operate in harsh conditions, when the excess heat dissipates into the cold environment. There are other factors that should be discussed specifically.
Number of LED strips on the market is huge. New manufacturers are constantly appearing, and the industrial giants are not lagging behind. The more famous and popular the brand, the more fakes from South-East Asia. They do not meet the stated parameters on almost all points, and the main consequence of this is the excessive heating. To avoid such mistakes, if you buy something feel free to ask the seller for the necessary certificates.
Many users buy inexpensive products from unknown manufacturers. Such products rarely match the parameters stated on the packaging. In particular, most of these strips have excessively high power. This is done in order to use a smaller number of LED elements and get the same brightness as in normal products. When power is applied, the LEDs begin to receive too high a voltage, which results in excessive heating. Simply put, the extra volt turns into heat. The solution will either install additional elements or use a step-down resistor.
LED strip is often warmed up for other reasons:
- Sometimes the cause of overheating is the use of sealed LED strips with IP67 protection in warm living areas. The elements are located inside a silicone tube, which does not allow excess heat to escape outside. There is a thermal effect, the LEDs get hot and begin to degrade in an increased manner.
- Often the cause of the excessive heat is too tight mounting. The tape is attached in such a way that a large number of elements are concentrated in one place. winding on the tube, laying strips, etc.п. Heat dissipation in such conditions is difficult, and the strip begins to overheat.
- Overheated not only the strip, but the power supply (driver). This occurs when there is not some reserve power source. Over time, it becomes overloaded, overheated, and less efficient. The solution is to replace the driver with a more powerful device.
How to cut the LED strip?
Today we will tell you how to shorten the LED strip to the right length and reduce its power consumption.
Let’s start with how to shorten the LED strip to the length you need. To cut a part of the tape, it is enough to use simple office scissors.
Before cutting the LED strip it is important to understand a number of key aspects about this product. Ribbon can be cut only in specially marked places. These places. mowing line cut between the contact pads (metal points).
The distance between the lines of the cut may vary depending on the model of LED strip. Among the samples we have you can see:
- Cutting pitch 100 mm for LED strips with 30 LEDs per meter
- The 50 mm cutting pitch for LED strips with 60 LEDs per meter
- Step cutting 25 mm for LED tapes with 120 LEDs per meter
- Step cut of 15 mm for LED tapes with 240 LEDs per meter
After you have found the mowing line cuts marked on the LED strip, simply cut straight through one of them with scissors, as shown here
It is important to note that the LED strips should be cut only in the specified places. Cutting the tape in the wrong place will cause some of the LEDs in the area of the cut will not work. In this example, you can see that the tape was not cut correctly: two LEDs do not light
While here you can see that the tape that was shortened correctly is fully functional.
In this example, we used a single color warm white LED strip (2600-3000 Kelvin). The same rules should be followed when cutting multi-color RGB LED tapes.

So, there’s really nothing difficult about cutting a piece of conductor. As a rule, the place of the cut is marked by the manufacturer every 3 LEDs (in 5-10 cm steps), as can be clearly seen in the picture below:

All you need to do. take sharp scissors and spend clearly on the marked mowing line. Be careful and cut strictly along the line that we do not damage the LED strip.
LED strip. Basics.
Please note that the LEDs should be cut only when unplugged! Working under voltage, as shown in the video below, is not recommended, t.к. if you accidentally short-circuit it, both the belt and the power supply can burn out!
Properly cut the LED wire as follows:
Also want to give you a photo that shows how can look like the place of cutting the LED strip from different manufacturers (for example, Jazzway or Apeyron):
It should also be noted that sometimes manufacturers do not mark the line on which to cut, scissors icon. In this case, you must cut the material by placing the blade of the scissors between two pairs of adjacent connection points, as shown in the very first picture in the article.
That’s all I wanted to tell you about how to cut the LED strip for 220 volts and 12V. We hope that now you know how much distance to cut and how to do it correctly so as not to damage the power supply!
LED strips are sold as one-piece multi-meter spools or in multiples of one meter. But what if the available section is longer than you need? The question arises. whether you can cut the LED strip? And if so, how to make the cut correctly?
LED-tape consists of many small blocks, each of which contains from 3 to 10 LEDs and some current-limiting resistors. They can easily be distinguished. the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are white or transparent, resistors are black. In most products between the blocks is a mark on which you can see how to cut the LED strip. As a rule, the mark is applied on the front side in the form of a dotted mowing line and the image of scissors.
Some types of LED tapes are covered with matte silicone and have no marks for cutting on the front side. Usually in this case, the layout of the tracks and parts is printed on the back side.
In other cases, if there is a mark, there is a mark and the cut is made as accurately as possible. It is worth noting that you will have to cut not only the soft material, but also the copper tracks. Therefore, it is recommended to cut the LED strip with sharp scissors or a letter opener.
Work carefully, securely fixing the product.
Standard LED tapes are fed by DC voltage of 12 or 24 volts through a special power supply, but there are also tapes directly plugged into a 220-volt network. Despite the supply voltage, it must be remembered that it is strictly forbidden to make a cut of the LED strip when it is on.
As you know, the LED strip is a set of LEDs and resistors mounted on a flexible substrate with copper tracks. It is no secret that it is made up of individual segments, each of which can be an independent light source (Fig.1). Therefore, there is a natural need to cut a single piece of LED strip into smaller pieces for subsequent installation.
The individual tape segment has copper contact pads on both sides. Monochrome LED strips have two contacts on each side of the segment, RGB strips have four contacts. In the middle of these contact areas at the junction of two adjacent segments across the width of the tape is a thin black stripe (some types of LED strips in addition is depicted with the symbol “scissors”). this is the place for cutting (Fig.2).
However, be careful and cautious when cutting the tape. Before cutting, be sure to (!) measure the length of the strip being cut several times. Do not forget that the length of the cut-off piece will be limited to the contact areas of the first and last segments. In other words, the length of the cut segment of tape will be a multiple of the length of one segment. After determining the length of the cut segment you need to put a mark on the contact pads of the strip. For this, it is convenient to use a thin black marker (Fig.3). Only after that should you start cutting the ribbon.
Where to cut the LED strip
On the network we found a video, with it you can understand how to do it correctly. Note that you need to cut only every three diodes. For example if you cut through one diode, all other diodes in the chain will go out at once. Only some tapes can be cut in one, here it all depends on the modification, so take that into account.
Please note! You should only cut the strip when it is turned off, otherwise you risk causing a short circuit in your house, and it is not worth it, so be careful.
Also take a look at this video, it’s about another tape. All tips are sensible, so feel free to trust them.
We decided to show you more how the cut of the LED strips may look like depending on the manufacturer:

Widely used LED strips on 220 volts are in business, where they are used as lighting and illumination of billboards, banners, signs and other elements of advertising and attention.
Popularity won due to the following factors:
The cheapening caused not only pluses but also minuses. Not recommended to use such tapes in rooms with the constant presence of people. Voltage after rectifier is obtained pulsed, with a frequency of 100 Hz. The light emitted at such a frequency flickers. The human eye cannot see it, but the nervous system and brain are adversely affected by such light. We recommend you read an interesting article about the harm of LED lights to expand the mind.
Do not use a LED strip at 220 volts in the living room, at home, as well as in places with a constant presence of people.
Many people know that the problem is solved by adding a smoothing filter (capacitor) to the circuit. But this will entail a number of disadvantages:
All of these disadvantages turn the LED strip on 220 volts in a useless device, so it is designed to work through a rectifier and is recommended for use in areas without the constant presence of people, such as the facade of the house.
What to do if there is no line on the LED
It also happens that the manufacturers do not mark where to cut the tape properly. In this case, please refer to the above photo. Scissors put between pairs of diodes strictly in the center, then there should be no problem.

How to cut
Can you cut the LED strip in any place?
LED RGB lighting. features, types and characteristics
Specialist in repair, maintenance of electrical equipment and industrial electronics.
You can not, there are certain rules by which it is cut. This is due to the design of this device.
The device LED strip
Band with LEDs. it is a printed circuit board in the form of a flexible strip. Along it are two, and on RGB devices. four conductive strips (on RGBW strips. five), between which the LEDs are located. In devices that are connected to the 12 V network, they are assembled in groups of three diodes and current-limiting resistance.
The number of diodes depends on the supply voltage, and if the supply voltage is higher. 24, 110 or 220 V, the LEDs in the group are more.
In places where the roll can be cut, the conductive strips have contact pads for connecting wires. There are also markings of the cutting point. a dotted line for a trimmer or scissors.
How to cut a conventional LED strip 12 V
Cutting area strip At the 12 V LED strip diodes are arranged in groups of three. Between each band there is a cutting point marked with a corresponding icon.
This is where it can be cut into pieces. If you cut randomly, the LEDs closest to the place of cutting will not work and the conductive layer will not be a place for connection. In this case, you will have to shorten the strip and cut the damaged area.
How to cut a colored (RGB) LED strip
The structure of an RGB strip is similar to a regular strip. The main difference is that it has four conducting strips. They are marked with the symbols “R”, “G”, “B” and “-“. This is the difference from the conventional strip where the pads are marked with a ” ” and a “-“.
It can be cut in the same way as conventional, monochrome. in the place of the cut is denoted by a respective icon.
In addition to RGB devices, there are RGBW, with five current-carrying strips and LEDs of four colors. red, green, blue and white. They are cut in the same way as conventional, monochrome brakes.
With the waterproofing
Tape with waterproofing If the LED strip to improve waterproofing is applied a layer of silicone, only on top or both sides, then it is cut as usual. The device of such a design with LEDs is no different from the usual.
The main difficulty is that when cutting the silicone does not interfere with this operation exactly in the middle of the contact pad. That’s why it’s better to do it with a sharp knife rather than scissors:
After cutting the piece to the desired length, trim the ends of the strip for soldering or connecting the connector. This is done with a knife. To solder the wire it is enough to remove the silicone only from the top. To connect using a connector, the bottom layer of silicone must also be removed.
Electrical and Electronics Repair and Maintenance Technician.
Caution! The strip is easy to damage, so the removal of waterproofing must be done very carefully
Cutting the LED strip for repair
During operation, one of the diodes can fail. This will cause the whole group to go out. three in a device designed for 12 V or more, in devices that are connected to other voltages. To repair, you need to cut out the damaged area and replace it with a serviceable one. Cut such a strip at the cutting points next to the LEDs that are not working.
If there is no marking
If there is no marking of the place of the cut, it is made between the adjacent contact pads or in the middle of the pad, stretched along the conductive layer.
This looks like an extension of the strip on the edge of the strip and should be on all the strips that are on the device.
They are located next to each other, across the strip of LEDs.
How to cut the LED-tape
Now about how to properly cut LED strips of different voltages and types.
On the 12 V LED filament between each group of 3 bulbs marked cutting lines.
Here you can clearly see the places for cutting every 3 LEDs.
Such a tape has a thin coating that allows the use of an ordinary office knife or scissors. The main thing. the accuracy of work. Tape is cut strictly along the dotted lines, otherwise part of the diodes will fail, and such a luminous device will remain only to throw out.
Ways of connecting the two segments of the LED strip
Connect the 2 pieces of the backlight can be done in 3 ways: tapes without wires. with a soldering iron, with wires and connectors.
Soldering tapes without wires
To solder strips without wires, their ends are cut to the level of current-carrying contacts. To do this, 1 piece of the product is cleaned from the adhesive base and the contacts are exposed. Then they are smeared with flux and a layer of tin is applied until a film of silver color appears. LED strips are connected to each other with an overlap, adhering to polarity. Heat the tin with a soldering iron for 5 seconds to get the pins to snap tightly together.
Connecting the wires
To solder the 2 segments with wires requires a connector to rotate the segments. Before connecting the parts together, prepare the backlight:
- The end of the product is cleaned from the moisture coating.
- Wipe the contact pads with a hard eraser or toothpick. This will help remove the oxide. You can use the tip of a match, it is soft and will not ruin the contacts, but it is good to eliminate oxidation.
- When the workpiece is done, then slip the contact pins under the spring pins. Red wire is plus, black is minus.
Solder in the wrong place of the cut
If you cut the tape improperly, you can’t use a connector to connect it. Do not throw the product away. к. It can be connected by soldering:
- To do this, the tracks of the LED light are carefully stripped. When the contact tracks passing inside it become clearly visible, strip the second part of the product.
- Then solder is applied to the contact tracks of the 2 segments using a soldering iron.
- The easiest way to solder the 2 sections is to use small pieces of wire. A more complex option. solder segments butt.
- To check the quality of soldering, lightly pull or move the wires. If the soldering place is not deformed, then the work was done correctly.
- Wrap the contact pads with electrical tape or insulate with heat shrink.
Repair of LED strip
You can use the following tools and materials to figure out why the LED light does not work and repair it:
Diagnosis and repair methods for electrical circuits is the rules: check the voltage and continuity of all parts of the lamp. Repair the product:
- LED lights flicker constant dim light, sometimes turned off completely. Functionality of the power supply of LED strip check by connecting it to a test lamp or multimeter. Flicker is caused by voltage spikes, bad contacts in the strip and power supply. If the backlight has 1 faulty LED, the flicker will appear in one place. Such a LED is replaced with a new one. If the installation of the product is made at right angles, the bends gradually fail. The damaged section is replaced partially or completely.
- The strip doesn’t light up completely or goes out, it means that some of its parts overheated, or it was installed incorrectly. To correct the problem, the bad segment of the backlight is removed and connectors or connectors are installed.
- If the lights do not turn on, you need to test the power supply for the presence of the input voltage. To do this, check the phase in the socket with a screwdriver-indicator or power on the input terminals. Multimeter set to AC measurement mode. To check the output voltage at the pins of the fixture and the output terminals of the power supply use a piece of tape. Check the voltage on the extinguished section. The integrity of the conductors has been compromised, if the voltage is supplied to the backlight, and the bulbs do not light up.
The problem of faulty power supply can be a blown fuse, faulty diode bridge, a broken track.
As you can see, having a certain knowledge baggage, cut the LED strip is not difficult. For backlighting at home it is advisable to use led lighting with 12 volts. They do not cause difficulties in installation and are safer in contrast to the high-voltage.
If necessary to lengthen or shorten the LED strip requires cutting into blocks that can serve as individual light sources.
Problems may arise if there are no marks in the form of dotted lines and scissors on the strip. If you do not have them on the back side, you need to focus on the width of the strip on the edges of the strip.
Silicone is easier to cut with a knife, the board. with sharp scissors.
