How to dilute oil for a brushcutter. The consequences of using them in the wrong proportions
How much oil to use per liter of gasoline for the lawn trimmer?
Lawn mowers are as essential for the garden or countryside as a pony tractor or chainsaw. An unpretentious tool in operation, demanding only the quality of fuel mixture and its own cleanliness. And while there are usually no misunderstandings about keeping the mower clean, some users occasionally have questions about the composition of the fuel. How to dilute petrol with oil for grass trimmer to keep its effective performance for as long as possible? What the consequences of too much or not enough oil in gasoline may be? The answers to these simple questions are straightforward: you have to understand the role of lubricant in a two-stroke engine.
Leftover unused fuel mixture needs a dark, dry corner where it can keep for up to 2 months. In general, there are different expert opinions on this topic:
- For mineral oils, the shelf life is 7-10 days, after which their lubricating properties are lost;
- For semi-synthetic and synthetic brands, there is evidence that they last from 30 days to 2 months.
After a longer period, it is recommended to change the fuel to a fresher and newer one.
Therefore, the process is described in detail above, how to properly build a gas mixture for two-stroke mower engines. To avoid damage to the grass trimmer due to lack of oil or frequent cleaning and unstable operation due to excessive lubrication, read the hedge trimmer manual carefully and follow it.
Which oil to choose to put in your grass trimmer or types of lubricants
Grass trimmers and lawn mowers are powered by two-stroke engines, which have a simplified design. It’s rare, but there are trimmer models with 4-stroke engines that run on pure gasoline. Power units of two-stroke type have no compartment for filling the engine oil (oil sump), due to which the weight of the tool is reduced and their cost is reduced. If the rotating parts of the motor are not lubricated, they will end up failing quickly. To avoid this, the grass trimmer is not filled with pure gasoline, but with a mixture of oil. What oil to dilute with gasoline for grass trimmer?
To begin with, let’s remember or find out what types of oils by chemical composition are available:
- Mineral fluids. designed for low-power, air-cooled machinery. This is the cheapest type of lubricant for motors
- Semi-synthetics. they are used for air- and water-cooled machinery
- Synthetic. suitable for all types of engines with different types of cooling. They do not require frequent replacement, and this type of lubricant is several times more expensive than mineral and semi-synthetic
From the above it follows that for grass trimmer oil with any composition is suitable. mineral, synthetic and semi-synthetic. Oils with different chemical compositions differ in price, so rely on the recommendations of the tool manufacturer when buying. The instructions indicate the advisory information about what types of oils are better to use. If it is a TC-W3 standard, then the composition of the substance is not so important. In this case it is possible to dilute mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic with petrol.
This is interesting! The main thing when choosing oil is not to get caught on the fake, as today you can often find different types of lubricating compositions for two-stroke engines, which consist mainly of low-quality petroleum products.

lawn trimmers are quite a common technique for weed control in country plots, homesteads, roads and housing. These devices have two other names. grass trimmer and lawnmower. These machines differ in their engines. The more expensive of them have four-stroke engines, all the rest have two-stroke engines. Of course, the latter are the most popular among the population, because they are simpler in design, lighter in weight, and much cheaper than their four-stroke competitors. However, two-stroke models are inconvenient because the fuel mixture for them must be prepared manually, maintaining a strict dosage between gasoline and oil. In four-stroke counterparts, mixing of these components is automatic, you only need to fill the gas tank and oil tank with the appropriate substances. Let’s consider the question of correct filling of exactly two-stroke brushcutters, because it depends on how effective and long will be the work of such a unit.
How to dilute gasoline with oil for grass trimmer. step-by-step instructions
Mixing the fuel composition takes into account special proportions.
If you dilute the fuel mixture with insufficient lubricant, it will lead to rapid wear and tear of the lawnmower parts
For the optimum oil to gasoline ratio, see the instruction manual of the trimmer. It is generally 1:50, 1:40 or 1:25.
Dilute the gasoline with the lubricant component must first be in a suitable container: do not do it immediately in the fuel tank. If you ignore this rule, the work of the motor can be inconsistent, due to which the tool will quickly fail. To dilute the fuel mixture, you should not use plastic canisters or bottles, because gasoline is able to dissolve this synthetic material. Order of mixing the fuel:
- Pour a liter of gasoline into a container (optimally a metal canister).
- Add half the amount of oil necessary.
- Mix the liquids thoroughly, away from sources of open flame.
- Pour the rest of the lubricant into the tank and stir the mixture again.
- Pour the fuel into the fuel tank of the grass trimmer.
Wear a respirator and rubber gloves when carrying out the work. For ease of pouring you can use a watering can. Do not keep the ready mixture longer than 3 months, it is better to dilute exactly as much fuel as you need for the planned work in the nearest future. Be sure to choose an oil for mixing with gasoline of high quality, it is better to buy it at proven gas stations.
Oil and fuel proportions
Calculation of the ratio of ingredients for preparing fuel for grass trimmer should take into account the recommendations on the oil package. The standard ratio is 1:50. Use any quality oil for two-stroke engines.
What kind of gasoline to use
Gasoline for grass trimmer must be unleaded with the tact number 92 or 95. As practice shows, gasoline AI-80 can cause damage to the device, which is a questionable economy. The fuel must be fresh, which means that it must not be stored for more than 60 days after purchase.
Other factors affect the fuel quality, e.g. use of special lawnmower lubricant and diluting it in a separate container. It is also recommended to use special canisters designed for storing gasoline.
How to Mix (Dilute) Gasoline and Oil for 2T Engines.
To summarize the above. Use for your brand equipment the oil designed or recommended by the manufacturer of that equipment. For the STIHL FS 55 brushcutter, for example, STIHL HP oil (see STIHL manual for STIHL FS 55). Figure 1a) or STIHL HP SUPER, for the Husqvarna 128R brushcutter use Husqvarna HP oil (Figure 1b) or Husqvarna LS oil. For 2.Do not use engine oils for 4-stroke engines. e.g. 10W30, SAE 30, etc.д.
Figure 1 a-Husqvarna oil (left), STIHL oil (right)
Never use 2-stroke oil intended for water-cooled engines, because these oils are designed to operate at lower temperatures.
Always follow the proportions of oil and gasoline in the fuel mixer manufacturer’s instruction manual. The ratio most commonly given by Chinese manufacturers is 1 part oil to 25 parts gasoline, but STIHL and Husqvarna specifies 1/ 50.When preparing a small volume of mixture (up to 1 liter), it is very important to carefully measure the amount of oil in the mixture. Even small miscalculations in the amount of oil can lead to serious inconsistencies in the mixture. You may use a medicine syringe for exact dosing in these cases. It is necessary to prepare fuel mixture in a clean container specially designed for this purpose. (see Figure 3-3). Fig. 2)
I don’t recommend to use improvised plastic bottles and canisters, because petrol can dissolve plastics and all this “slurry” gets into a fuel tank and puts out a carburetor.
Plastic gasoline canisters are always marked with a “flame” sign. It is very convenient to use a canister equipped with a spill-less fueling system (see “The Fuel Tank System”). figure 3). The no-fill system has a valve that prevents fuel from spilling when the tank is full.

Oil for brushcutter. how to choose and in what proportions to dilute
Many of you have gasoline power tools in the household, for example, in a private home can not do without the chainsaw. Do you understand that it helps to prepare firewood for the winter, it is useful at construction and repair works and is a very useful tool. If the country house also has a decent-sized plot, then the grass trimmer or lawnmower, which also run on gasoline, is simply needed to combat the grass.
Of course, you can buy them and electric, but not everyone likes to pull a 30-meter extension cord to mow the area overgrown with grass to the knee. That’s why most people prefer to work with a gasoline-powered tool. As you know, you need to add a special oil for two-stroke engines to gasoline. And here we are going to talk about it, because it’s a very important aspect, if you don’t add oil and add it in wrong proportions, then your engine will go quack very fast and your way will be to the service center. To avoid all these troubles, add only quality oil and in the right proportions.
The most popular for chain saws, brush cutters and trimmers are products of famous company STIHL. It comes in two packages: 1 liter and 100 ml. For those who work a lot, a liter bottle is good, but a small bottle is enough to “cut once”. A 1 liter container costs 250, and a 10 ml container costs 60. The savings are obvious if you take a large one.
Add the oil to the gasoline at a ratio of 1:50, so you add 100 ml for 5 liters of gasoline. As you see, a small bottle is perfect for making 5 liters of petrol mix for a chain saw or a trimmer for grass. The big bottle has special marks on the side, by which you can determine how much oil you have poured out of the bottle. If you bought a big 1 liter bottle, then buy a 20ml syringe at the drugstore. It’s really easy to use. only 1 syringe of oil for every 1 liter of gasoline.
The recommendation is to use original brand oil for your machine: this is the ideal solution, because it has been developed and tested specifically for STIHL power tools. Note that Stihl has its own brands, such as VIKING (popular models of gasoline trimmers). Use Stihl oil for those as well and you won’t have any problems at all.
If you have put more gasoline mixture than you can use, it is best to store the leftovers in a metal canister or in a glass container. Never store the mixture in a plastic bottle. Of course, if you use up the rest in a couple of days, you can pour the rest of the mixture into a plastic bottle, but if the mixture will be stored for a long time, then either a canister or a glass bottle. The thing is that the gas mixture corrodes the plastic bottle, there are microscopic precipitations of plastic in the mixture and this is very bad for the engine. Keep this in mind if you want your tool to run long and without problems.
The second most popular oil brand is notorious Hooksvarna. Of course, when you put it this way, more people use STIHL chainsaws, at least all my friends and their friends use them in their work.
But there are those who cherish Husqvarna tools and I understand them, because I personally do not see much difference between Husqvarna and Stihl, both tools are of very high quality. But I have seen some happy Husqvarna chain saw owners and they say that their saws are great. I have not sawn myself, but I always listen to what people say. So if you have Husqvarna gasoline tool, it would be better to use a special brand oil for it. Although nothing bad happens if you dilute the gasoline Stihl. But since the manufacturer recommends only his products, so we do.
On sale you can find a liter capacity. The bottle is black, stylish, same markings on the side as Stihl has (to know how much oil has been poured out of the bottle). Seems to me the quality is exactly the same. It costs 270 for a bottle and a little bit more.
Both are quality oils, the cost is about the same, each diluted in the proportion of 1 to 50. So feel free to buy any, of course, it is better to take the oil of the brand you have the tool. then everything will be perfect, just like the manufacturer advises. Good luck with cutting and mowing, and may your power tool work for a long time without downtime.
on a side note: The submersible pump “Aquarius 3”. my review.
How to mix
If you do not have a special measuring jug with divisions, which are included with each noteworthy trimmer for grass, or such a container is lost, then use any suitable container. Glass or metal is better. Plastic can also be used, but you must choose a bottle with rigid walls.
The container should be a multiple of 1 liter. You can also use a 1.5 liter bottle, but practice shows that it is not very convenient. You also need a medical syringe, preferably 20 to 50 milliliters. First pour petrol into a container, then add a precisely measured amount of oil (by volume). You can’t change the procedure.
If you have a “pre mix” oil, you should close the bottle or canister with the cap and turn it upside down several times and shake it vigorously. If the oil is “self-mixed,” it will dissolve on its own. The prepared mixture should be used over the course of a day. If you know how much fuel a grass trimmer consumes for a certain amount of work (or time), it is not difficult to calculate the amount of mixture. Otherwise, dilute the new fuel before each filling so that a minimum quantity is left before the end of work.
Recommendations for storing ready-to-use grass trimmer fuel mix
After filling up the grass trimmer, many people save the remaining mixture in the bottle until the next time. Sometimes this next time comes not soon, and stretches until next year. Do not store the mixture ready for so long, because the oil decomposes. After preparing the mixture, you need to use it for 1-2 weeks. In addition, you can not also store the tool for a long time with the fuel mixture poured into the tank, because the effect will be similar. To prevent unforeseen circumstances, it is advisable to consider the following recommendations for storing a ready mix of gasoline and oil:
- Prepare the fuel mixture in the amount that will be used. If you do not know how much fuel you are using, then it is better to prepare less
- If fuel mixture remains in the grass trimmer tank (when the tool is hidden until the next season), it must be completely used up or drained
- Before pouring the ready mix into the tank stir it thoroughly
- Store the prepared mixture in a tightly screwed container and in a place restricted to sunlight
If you follow all the recommendations, the life of the grass trimmer will be at least as long as the instructions. The use of quality consumables in combination with the observance of the recommendations on the preparation of the mixture into the trimmer for grass, will result in a long and efficient service of the gasoline tool.
