How to know the date of manufacture of a Bosch battery

How to know the date of manufacture of the battery

Many motorists when buying a battery want to know exactly when their battery was manufactured. All manufacturers include the date of manufacture in the production code printed on the battery case. In this article we will analyze in detail what the codes on the batteries mean and how to find out the date of manufacture of the battery based on this information.

Eternal technology does not exist, every product has its shelf life. Batteries also have their own rules of operation, because complex chemical processes take place inside them. Although modern batteries are designed to last longer without recharging in storage, when you buy a battery, pay attention to when it was manufactured.

According to the conclusion of experts storage of conventional lead-acid batteries with antimony impurities is not more than 10 months. For units with silver-plated plates storage terms of one year to a year and a half. The self-discharge of calcium batteries is reduced to a minimum, the normal commissioning period is up to 2 years from the date of manufacture. And for batteries made with AGM technology, the commissioning date reaches three years.

For more details on how the date of manufacture affects the life of the battery, we explained in the article “What affects the date of manufacture of the battery”

In other words, do not buy a battery that is too stale. Remember, buying any car battery before putting it on the car, it is desirable to charge it. it will prolong its service life.

Buying a battery in our company. you will always buy the battery, with the allowable terms of commissioning, since when replenishing stocks, we take into account the amount of sales of batteries and terms of their routine storage. You can read our reviews.

And so you came to the store. Where to look? How to find out the date of manufacture of the battery?

Usually the production date is printed on the battery case. There are no set standards for the marking of manufacturing dates.-

The information is differently labeled on a variety of batteries. Manufacturers mark the release terms with letters, numbers or color coding. But how do you know how to decipher the code on the battery? There’s nothing complicated. Most manufacturers provide this information on their official websites.

We’ve put together a decoding of the most popular brands of batteries for you.

These transcripts are current at the time of writing (as of 2019), i.e.к. The equipment at the factories is periodically updated and production codes change, so the codes on older models of batteries, as well as on batteries that will be produced in the future, may differ from those described in this article.

The 6-digit code on the Baren battery cover. The first number. Year, second and third digits. week of manufacture, 4th digit. day number.

The marking is located at the top of the cover in the factory code. This code contains 24 characters, the fourth digit represents the year, the month number is in the fifth and/or sixth position.

On Bosch batteries, the production date code is repeated on the front label in the center of the battery. It contains a three-digit number with information on the date of manufacture. For example 711. November 2017.

The first number in this combination is the year of manufacture, the next two. month (17. 20 January. April, 53. 60 May. December).

Bosch battery range

Since we are interested in batteries for passenger cars, in our short review we present only these lines. Among them there are practically no collapsible serviceable battery models.

Bosch S3

This series is designed for cars with minimum power consumption. If we talk about new cars, these are mostly small cars. Such batteries will also be suitable for used cars made quite a long time ago.

In spite of their affordable price, the Bosch S3 batteries are of high quality and reliability. For pragmatic motorists, such a battery will be the ideal choice.

Bosch S3 battery

Bosch S4 Silver

The most universal series of car batteries from Bosch guarantees stable power supply to the onboard network and reliable engine starting regardless of the outside temperature. This line includes models that can be installed on most makes and models of passenger car fleet of the planet. All are characterized by excellent performance and an unbeatable combination of cost and quality.

S4 Silver series battery models are recommended for European and Asian (produced in accordance with the JIS standard) assemblies in the medium range, i.e. with an average power consumption level.

With increased starting current, these batteries operate confidently in all climate zones, characterized by unpretentious maintenance and durability at the level of the stated.

Other Bosch S4 Silver series advantages:

  • 15% higher starting current and 20% longer service life of the “silver” series compared to similar models of other manufacturers;
  • stable starting of power units in all climatic zones;
  • Compliance with the requirements of the world’s leading car manufacturers.

Bosch S5 Silver Plus

Even more powerful line of batteries includes a lot of innovative solutions, which helped to bring these batteries to a new level. The use of the “silver technology” in the manufacture of the plates and the active zone has made it possible to significantly increase the starting current without increasing the battery size. The company’s engineers have also been able to increase the longevity of their S5 Silver Plus car batteries by 30%.

Russian consumers should note: the manufacturer claims that batteries of this series provide reliable starting of the power unit at the most extreme subzero temperatures.

The choice of models is huge, you can choose a model for almost any car, but we recommend S5 Silver for cars with a large number of consumers, as well as for cars equipped with powerful diesel engines.

It can be also noted that these batteries are ideally suited for work in the city mode with short trips and long idling in traffic.

Bosch S5 EFB

In the manufacture of batteries this series uses proprietary Enhanced Flooded Battery technology, which acronym is shown in the name of the line. The essence of it lies in the use of special envelopes enveloping the plates and having microscopic pores. Diameter of these holes is such that it prevents leakage of electrolyte, but does not interfere with current flow. As a result, the active zone is held on the plate surface much better, increasing battery life.

The target audience of the range is low-volume hybrid cars.

  • higher starting current in comparison to the S5 Silver Plus series;
  • possibility of use in cars equipped with the Start-Stop system;
  • affordable price;
  • Capable of providing an increased number of charge-discharge cycles.

The latest AGM battery series is characterized by increased resistance to multiple charge-discharge cycles and no fear of deep discharge. These completely maintenance-free batteries are more resistant to vibration and are not affected by jolts and shocks.

S6 AGM HighTec are recommended for luxury cars, SUVs and power-hungry models. These batteries have also proven themselves in water transport, as power sources for trailers, motor homes and similar vehicles.

  • high vibration resistance and mechanical strength;
  • absolute tightness;
  • simplicity and safety of operation;
  • can be installed horizontally.

How to determine the date and year of manufacture of the battery?

When choosing a battery, many people look first and foremost at the name of the manufacturer, the progressiveness of the technology used in the product, the price, etc.д. Of course, no one will argue that all these factors are important when choosing a battery. But the freshness of a chemical energy source has an even greater weight for the forthcoming operation. The more such a product has lain in the warehouse, the less attractive it should look in the eyes of the consumer. Let’s say, after two years of non-use the battery loses a lot of its useful properties. That’s why it makes sense to talk about how to find out the date of manufacture of the battery, because even in the store the seller often finds it difficult to answer this question.

Determining the year of manufacture of the battery

It is more than realistic to find that you cannot be told where the date or at least the year of manufacture is in your automotive inventory. The seller is even willing to claim that no such information is put on the label today, and that all products are fresh. But in this case we don’t need a label at all.

In the vast majority of cases, the numbers needed for analysis are embossed, laser etc.д. on the plastic of the battery case itself. Also, some brands use a color label, which identifies the year of manufacture of the product.

It’s true that each brand or group of manufacturers has its own, unique, system of designations, there is no international standard.

VARTA, Bosch

In this case it is necessary to look at the production code, which is printed on the upper cover. Here, the fourth label is the year, and the fifth and sixth are the month. For example, G2C3080520991 847205 35E 09. 3 (2013.) and 08 (August).

VARTA also uses color techniques to denote the quarters in which the production took place: I.2012. green, II.2012. red, III.2012. pink, IV.2012 is white, I.2013. gray, II.2013. orange, III.2013 is yellow, IV.2013. blue, I.

Mutlu, Topla, TAB

Six digits are stamped on top of the Turkish Mutlu battery. While the first is the line number, the second is the year and the fourth is the month. The last two numbers stand for a specific date of issue, probably to punish in case of any dishonest workers who were on duty on that day.

As a result, the marking 340527 decodes as May 27, 2014. Topla and TAB use a 14-digit code, of which the third and fourth characters represent the year and the fifth and sixth represent the week.

Thus, it is clear from flow F 1140300941864 that the release took place in the third week (January) of 2014.

Westa, Docker, Vortex, Forse, FireBall, FB, Uno, Dominator

There are two groups of numbers. The first includes four digits, the second six. The fifth and sixth digits indicate the year, the seventh. the half-year, the eighth. the serial number of the month in the given half-year. The last two digits are the number of the month. Example: 3384 141612. June 12, 2014. The heavy group of batteries of the above brands has its own marking, for example 14013253, where the fourth and fifth characters. the year (2014), the sixth. the half-year (2), and the penultimate. the serial number of the month (November).

Tyumen Batbear, Yamal, Arctic Batbear, Tyumen Bear, Akteh, Orion, Beast, ZD, Amur

Six digits are printed on the back wall. The decoding is very simple: 022014. month 02 (February) 2014. In case of Akteh, Orion, Zveron, ZD brands, look at the upper cover, the number of digits is less. For example, 0514 means the battery was manufactured in May 2014. Exactly the same in the case of Amur batteries, only the code is applied near the plus terminal.

Cobat, Titan, Panasonic, Furukawa Battery

The Cobat and Titan have five characters in the center of the cover. The first is the day of the week, the second and third is the number of the week of the whole year, and the fourth is the year.

Here it is worth noting that years are indicated by Roman letters: H. 2011, V. 2012, N. 2013, Z. 2014, P. 2015, A. 2016, S. 2017, T. 2018, X. 2019, L. 2020. Therefore, the code 108V1 means that the battery left the assembly line on Monday of the eighth week of 2012.

For Panasonic and Furukawa Battery the date is easier to decipher: 211213A. December 21, 2013.

In all other cases you’d better check the calculation algorithm on the producer’s official site. Additionally, it’s worth pointing out that the best battery is the one that’s as fresh as possible.

And you’d better get rid of the ones that have been sitting in warehouses and shelves for almost three years.

But the battery, which was produced within the last year, will be an excellent option and will serve for excellent 3-7 years.

Why do you need to know the date of manufacture of a battery??

The code on the battery case of many manufacturers includes the batch number, country, factory and city of manufacture, conveyor number, date of manufacture from the day, month and year, etc. important information. It is applied primarily for internal use, so that you can easily distinguish the batch number and quickly remove it from the tape in case of a defect. The code is also important for the store personnel, especially when they are approached with a complaint and need to conduct an independent examination of the technical condition of the device. The marking can also serve you well if you need to know the date of manufacture and determine how long a device has been idle in the warehouse. It happens that the storage conditions in the warehouse are far from ideal, and the date of manufacture is the last thing they pay attention to. To get the battery to the store could not be without “adventures. In other words, a battery can go through a lot of troubles before it is in its rightful place under the hood, so the less time has passed since the production date, the better for the condition of the battery.

Different batteries have their own periods of storage without use, but downtime from manufacture for older maintained antimony and low-antimony batteries is only six months. advanced maintenance-free batteries with calcium added to the plates can be stored without recharging for up to a year. A calcium battery with silver doped plates can be stored for 12-18 months from the date of manufacture. But even during this time, many chemical processes will occur within the battery that will affect condition and performance. This period is only recommended, and it is better to get a newer device. Even the best AGM-batteries can not keep all their characteristics longer than two or three years and will “sit down” forever.

To find out the date of manufacture of a battery, it is important to decipher the code of letters and numbers, which is drawn on the upper section of the box with a laser, or can be found on a label or special sticker. Each manufacturer has its own principle of encrypting the number; there is simply no single way of doing it, because even within a single company the code can vary.

Please note: if there is no manufacturing data on the battery at all or the date of manufacture is difficult to read. be wary of buying such a device. Most likely in front of you a counterfeit, which will not serve long.

Where to Buy a Car Battery with a “Fresh” Production Date?

Try not to buy batteries older than one year. This does not apply to AGM batteries. They have a much longer shelf life, because they are virtually not subject to self-discharge. Applying to the Internet store, you can be sure of the originality of purchased goods and their “freshness. Managers provide information about the date of manufacture of the requested product. Together with the battery you get the warranty card, which should be kept till the expiration of the warranty period. Use the service of express delivery. The courier will promptly deliver the battery to your car and install it. You can also get an additional discount on your old batteries. Read also the article “Why the battery has grown “sides”?”

How to know the date of manufacture of the battery by the marking

Each battery manufacturer puts a special code on its battery, which is called the marking. Technologically, the marking can either be burned by laser (such as marking on Tyumenskmo Medved), or melted into a die (as the Kursk batteries). As a rule, the marking of the date of issue is put on the fact of readiness of the battery, that is the actual, but in practice, some factories sin and put the date of issue from the future, which allows you to sell “fresh” batteries from the factory, albeit manufactured 2 months ago. This is most likely done in the summer and fall period in order to optimize the production load and stock the battery for the season.

It is believed that the fresher the battery, the higher its value, so often, at low attractive trying to get rid of old batteries. During storage the battery loses some of its capacity due to the chemical processes going on inside. For example, batteries with hybrid technology can be stored for 6 months without losing quality, while calcium batteries can be stored for 12 months. That said, Johnson Controls (manufacturer of Warta, Bosch, Energizer and other brands) says that their batteries can be stored for 18 months. In fact, this is just a marketing ploy and a tool to make it easier for dealers to sell off “stale” batteries that get to store shelves a long way off.

Therefore, when going to buy a new battery be sure to get a printout of the date of manufacture of the battery in the store. This will allow you to make the right choice.

In addition to marking release dates the batteries have markings according to accepted standards (GOST, SAE, DIN, EN, JIS), about which our website will write a little later.

This article provides examples of markings used since 2014, as in 2015 there were major changes in the battery market, and some private brand owners have changed the manufacturing plants.

How to quickly determine the date on a battery in stock

The optimization system offers methods for storing batteries according to the FIFO scheme (first in first out). Each unit is labeled with a different-colored sticker by time of arrival.

Brief information is taken as a check. The release date on the battery signals when the disputed date of sale of the appliance is imminent. This is how the trade of devices with a limited period of time is organized in European countries.

In Russian conditions the foreign rated models of batteries withstand storage for up to 3 years without loss of quality. But very carefully choose maintenance-free models from little-known manufacturers.

How to charge batteries “Bosch” with a battery charger

Since most of the battery models from these manufacturers are maintenance-free, the car owner will only have to check the terminal voltage occasionally and recharge the battery if it is below the recommended level after a long trip (14.4-14.6 V, depending on the type of battery).

The operation is best carried out with an automatic charger, if possible. from the same manufacturer. In this case you only need to connect the device correctly, plug it in and press the one button for the chosen charging mode.

If you use a charger that does not have an automatic mode, there are several nuances to consider.

So, how to charge Bosch rechargeable batteries correctly:

  • if the battery is of the serviced type, the initial charging current is chosen based on the capacity (if it is 55 Ah, the current rating will be 5.5 А);
  • AGM batteries may be charged with any current, the main condition is that the voltage must not exceed the recommended value for the particular model;
  • The procedure should be performed in a ventilated area;
  • If the radiator was brought in from the street, you need to give it time to warm up to the indoor temperature;
  • before charging, it is necessary to clean the terminals and the housing from oxides and dirt;
  • when connecting the charger to the battery it is important to observe correct polarity;
  • If the cover of a collapsible battery can be opened, it must be removed, but while charging check the level and density of the liquid, if necessary. top up with distilled water;
  • besides during charging you need to periodically check electrolyte temperature. it must not exceed 50C. Otherwise charging should be stopped temporarily until the acid solution cools down.

If you anticipate a long downtime of the car, be sure to recharge the battery! Prolonged storage in discharged condition leads to sulfation of the plates and reduces the life of the battery.
