How to lubricate a chainsaw bar sprocket. Is it possible to pour automobile oil into a chainsaw??

How to operate, maintain, and repair chainsaws, guide bars, and sprockets

You are a chain saw owner quite recently and you don’t know yet which chain oil is better to use. Lack of this knowledge, can be detrimental to the instrument, t. к. the type and quality of the lubricant depends on how long the bar and chain will stay in good working order.

After reading this article you will have filled the knowledge gap.к. we will look at the question of using different brands and makes of oil to reduce friction on the chain saw components. We’ll also look at what lubricants you can apply to your chainsaw in order to extend its working life as long as possible.

Chain oil for chainsaws: when to fill and how to choose the right lubricant

All modern chainsaws have a separate oil circuit for lubricating the chain cutting elements.

The quality of the saw’s performance depends to a large extent on its condition and working conditions. That’s why chainsaw accessory companies create special brands of oil that provide reliable surface lubrication.

What kind of oil to use

There is a widespread belief that quality brand name chain oil for chainsaws should only be used in the petrol and oil mixture of the engine. But choosing which oil to use is not a difficult task. Anything is fine as long as it gets in the right place.

But getting the lubricant onto the chain is half the battle. It has to hold on to the metal and stay on the bottom edge, which is what you saw the wood with. For this purpose agents with high adhesion, that is ability to stick to the surface and stick to it, are used. Oil with poor adhesion will fly off the chain when it’s turning fast, spraying everything around in vain. Of course some will remain, but whether this is enough to keep the chain from overheating during intensive work is unknown.

Important! In all-season chain saw operation it is important to take into account the dependence of oil supply conditions on the season and air temperature.

Mineral lubricants that keep the chain and guide bar lubricated in positive temperatures tend to crystallize and become thick in cold weather. This causes the lubricant to be hard to pump and increases the load on the oil pump. Its service life is shortened, and it may fail prematurely. In winter you should choose synthetic lubricants with special additives that offer reliable lubrication even in cold conditions up to.40 ℃. At low frosts and temperatures around zero degrees use semisynthetics.

lubricate, chainsaw, sprocket, possible

An assessment of chain saw chain oil use estimates that the wrong oil can increase the load on an engine by as much as 10%. The life of the chain and guide bar is shortened even more.

Due to the recent emphasis on the environment, branded oil products are increasingly being made with degradable. But in the long run, chain lubrication can use up to a gallon of oil. And for people who are not indifferent to nature it is an extra reason to choose an environmentally friendly product. If you don’t care what gets into your yard and what kind of marks are left on the wood after the cut.

When and how to fill

It’s clear where to put the chain oil. There is a separate container for this. In most chain saws the size of this container is based on the volume of the saw’s gas tank. If both tanks are filled to capacity, they are emptied at roughly the same time. For this reason it is advisable to fill the oil tank to the full capacity at the same time as filling the fuel tank. That way you don’t have to refill it twice.

Before starting work it is a good idea to check that the oil flows into the chain. Just point the end of the bar on a flat surface. Some of the lubricant will run off the edge of the bar. Drops on the surface indicate normal operation.

Summer oil becomes thicker at high sub-zero temperatures and its lubricating power will be impaired. For this reason it is well worth using winter brands. If this is not possible, it is worth spending time diluting existing oil to make it less thick. It is best diluted with kerosene at a ratio of 1 to 4.

Some models have an adjustable feed rate in the lubrication system. It is useful for adjusting in case you change the type of lubricant.

Please note! Do not fill the tank with a mixture of oils of different types. mineral and synthetic.

If you run out of oil from one manufacturer and have the same type of oil available, but from a different company, it is allowed to mix them on the condition that they are used immediately. It is not a good idea to leave such a mixture on for a long time.

Sprocket Lubricant

The chain saw bar has an idler sprocket at the end of the bar that makes the chain turn. It, too, needs to be lubricated periodically. For this purpose, thick materials are used. STIHL multi-purpose grease can be used. Lithol-based domestic lubricants are also suitable. There is a special hole on the bar for greasing the sprocket. Pump grease into it with a grease nipple or syringe.

Please note that frequent use of the bar nose, for example when selecting grooves, will result in higher loads on the sprocket and needs to be lubricated more often.

Main manufacturers

Leading chainsaw manufacturers produce consumables and lubricants for chainsaws, including those for chains and bars. All other things being equal, preference should be given to the products of the chain saw manufacturer. But the quality of the best brands is such that the use of any other manufacturer’s lubricant will not negatively affect the performance.

The best-known brands are considered to be German STIHL, Swedish Husqvarna and Japanese Makita. They provide a fairly wide range of adhesive oils, among which are:

  • STIHL ForestPlus mineral oil for temperatures up to.15 ℃. Standard packaging is 1 and 5 liters. For long-term work, it has recently been available in a 20-liter container as well;
  • STIHL’s highly environmentally friendly BioPlus is vegetable-based. Once in the soil, it decomposes quickly and does not contaminate. Operating temperature also up to.15 ℃. Packaging: 1 and 3 liters;
  • STIHL SynthPlus is the right semisynthetic oil for low temperatures.25 °.
  • Eco-friendly, biodegradable Bio and Bio Advanced. Introduced as a universal multigrade oil. Bio Advanced variant. improved oxidation stability and up to 10 % better lubricating properties;
  • Makita. Biotop;
  • Champion adhesive oil.

Of the Russian brands, Zubr ZMPM-M is available as a special chain oil. There are also other less known manufacturers whose lubricating oils are noticeably cheaper.

What to replace expensive oil with

Special proprietary chain lubricants have the disadvantage of being expensive. It is not expensive to buy a liter of other expensive oil. And if there are jobs that require several liters, or even dozens of liters, you will probably think about saving money. The main thing is not to go to extremes in considering the options. You can save money on oil to the extent that you will have to change the chain or even the tire itself or the oil pump several times.

Care of the tire

Every few hours of operation, the bar has to be set in 180° so that both sides work out more or less equally.

You also have to lubricate the bar sprocket every time you fill up the tank to keep the bar long and in good working order. The only manufacturer who has solved this problem is STIHL with its Ematic

It is very common to hear the advice that if a “dented groove” has formed on the guide rails, to straighten it out with a file, but if the tire is not normal. What’s more, if you don’t keep a perfect straight angle between the file and the bar, the “fixed” bar will last even less, because the chain will wobble in the bars during operation and break them even more.

STIHL sticky oils

The following adhesive oils are available on the company’s website for various operating temperatures and are well lubricated:

  • ForestPlus glue. Recommended for use at.15 ° C with a shelf life of 3 years. It comes in liter or five-liter containers;
  • BioPlus. its peculiarity is that it has a vegetable base that allows it to decompose quickly if it gets into the soil. Refers to minus 15, ships in three, five and liter containers;
  • The latest SynthPlus oil has the ability to maintain performance at minus 25° C.

Husqvarna oils

The company offers its customers Husqvarna Bio Advanced oil for normal and extreme conditions. Oil is made from plant components and is environmentally friendly, and comes in liter and five-liter containers.

Vegoil has oil as a cost-effective solution, and according to the manufacturer, its consumption is reduced by 40 percent compared to others. Comes in liter containers.

The company also makes a bearing grease that recommends lubricating the drive sprocket and sprocket bearings.

Less common but popular among chainsaw owners are:

  • Polar Lube Mineral. dig Oleo-Mac;
  • Champion glue, sold in containers of up to 10 liters, which is convenient for use in forestry;
  • Makita Biotop;
  • Anchor.

You can familiarize yourself with some of the chain oils by watching the video below, in which a large tool chain salesman commented on the use of glue oils from different manufacturers.

How to replace the original expensive oil and is it worth it

In cases where the original cannot be used, you can replace it with engine oil. Cheap car oils, such as automotive or diesel lubricants, are not suitable for long-term use because of reduced adhesive properties.

Some owners, despite the recommendations, still use analogs, preferring to change the tire and chain more often, but it’s up to everyone to decide. Such oil can have no adverse effect on the lubrication system, which means that the only difference is to protect the tire from chain friction.

A little bit about chainsaw chain lubrication

Cleaning is called oil that went into a car’s engine or transmission. Many chainsaw owners, when trying to save money, use them to lubricate the chain, which means serious repair costs.

The cause of these failures is the presence of impurities metal chips, which are deposited in the crankcase, as well as in the drainage tray is removed from it.

Metal chips on the tire act as an abrasive on the tire surface. Simply put, instead of protecting the surface, production increases wear on the bar, drive sprocket and bar bearing. Training also affects the chainsaw chain where it bends and increases the risk of chain mechanism failure.

Conclusion: to lubricate chainsaw chains it is necessary to use original oils from manufacturers. It is forbidden to start the engine. In the absence of high quality oils, pure automotive oils can be replaced for a short time.

An overview of the manufacturers of oils for internal combustion engines

Among the manufacturers that make the best two-stroke oils, the two leaders are Husqvarna (Husqvarna) and STIHL (STIHL). Companies produce not only conventional mineral oils, but also synthetic lubricants designed for 2-stroke engines operating in harsh conditions.

Husqvarna HP

This Swedish manufacturer, which includes several well-known brands, including Partner (Partner), known for its garden equipment for semi-professional and professional use. Husqvarna produces not only machinery, but also high quality lubricants used in almost all brands of gasoline tools.

lubricate, chainsaw, sprocket, possible

The photo below shows 2-stroke Husqvarna HP oil with special additives that can compensate for poor fuel quality, which is not uncommon in our country. It is not always the octane number of gasoline bought at the gas station corresponds to the declared one.

This grease is green in color and contains a semi-synthetic base. Can be filled in 10 liter containers. The mixture is diluted in standard ratio 1:50 (20 g per 1 liter of gasoline). But if the engine has not yet been run-in or if work in cold weather is expected, the ratio can be increased to 1:40.

It was specially developed for engines in STIHL machines. It has a mineral base, has high lubricating and cleaning capabilities, and can be used in ambient temperatures at least.10°С.

The bottle has a special dispenser which allows the process of mixing the fuel mix without additional measuring pots.

The grease has a red color and is stored for no more than 4 years in a sealed container. The latter can be filled in different capacities, large or small (for one-off refuelling). For example, a 20-gram container is available for sale, the contents of which are added to 1 liter of gasoline. A very practical option for occasional chain saw users. Important: the mixture of gasoline and this oil can not be stored for more than 1 month, because it will already lose its lubricating properties during this time.

The oil is in the higher gear category. It is a fully synthetic oil; its color is green and it has good lubricating properties, but thanks to the salt-free additives it does not create soot deposits.

The oil was specially developed for lubricating engines operating for long periods at high loads and low ambient temperatures, up to.25°С. In addition, this lubricant is not harmful to the environment. spilled on the ground will decompose 80% in 21 days. Grease is packaged in 100 ml and 1 liter bottles.

Chain oil for chainsaws

A chainsaw has two tanks, one of which is filled with gasoline, and the other with oil to lubricate the equipment chain. Quality and composition of oil, as well as fuel will determine durability, serviceability of chain saw. Chainsaw chain oil is often available in hardware stores as a ready-to-use product from chain saw manufacturers, and is designed for this purpose. The ready-to-use product is suitable for operation at low temperatures and does not contaminate the environment. Ready oil can be replaced with other oil, the main thing is that it is not used. Manufacturer’s representatives recommend buying a brand oil or preparing a mix based on the one in the owner’s manual. If the instructions do not specify a particular type of oil, then you can buy two-stroke oil, which you can buy at a specialty store. Two-stroke oil can be of two kinds:

Experts advise using synthetic oil for chain saws, but it is always more expensive in price. The main advantage of this type of lubricant is that during the operation of equipment in the cylinder does not form soot, and this prolongs the life of the equipment.

If mineral oil was used for 100 working hours, then it is better to continue to use it, because in the process of work could accumulate soot. Synthetic product tends to clean and will wash off the deposited layer from the walls of the cylinder, and this will result in damage to the equipment.

Chainsaw Sprocket Lubricant

To extend service life and reduce friction on the drive sprocket, the manufacturer has equipped this mechanism with a needle bearing, which should be periodically lubricated. STIHL multipurpose grease can be used for lubrication.

If you do not want to overpay, it is better to use an inexpensive, but no less high-quality option, the grease Lithol or Lithol 24. Thanks to its viscosity, Lithol can easily replace the original.

To lubricate the chain saw bar sprocket, you can use the same lubricants as the drive sprocket, using a special grease gun. This allows the grease to be pressed, through the technological holes in the tire, to the sprocket bearing.

How to Grease a Chainsaw Sprocket

In this article we have compiled recommendations for professional saw system maintenance. adjusting, lubricating and replacing the chain, bar and sprocket. Do your best to follow these rules and your work will always be finished on time and to a realistic standard.

Under normal use the drive sprocket wears out twice as slowly as the saw chain, so to get even wear on the saw chain, you should use the two chains alternately. This is also advisable because the drive links will be damaged sooner if they come into contact with a worn drive sprocket when they rotate. It is a rule of thumb: 4 chains = 2 sprockets = 1 bar.

IMPORTANT! Never install the chain on a worn sprocket or bar.

Of course if you want to know which chainsaws are the best and how to choose the one that suits you best please contact our online consultant and ask for the saw manufacturer and the model of your saw.

chain tensioning on your chainsaw

It is important to carefully check the tension of the saw chain and re-tighten it as necessary. Never allow the chain to slacken on the bar. Low tensioning increases component wear, increases stress on the housing and can cause shock absorber failure.

Also, before you change a chain to a new one, keep it in an oil bath for one night to make sure that all the chain components are properly lubricated. Otherwise it may stretch prematurely.

IMPORTANT! Allow the sprocket to cool down before carrying out any adjustments. Loosen the tensioning screws after completing the sawing work.

Service and lubrication of guide bar

To keep your guide bar running as long as possible you should turn it over from time to time and change the worn-out saw chain in good time. If you get a burr on the bar top edges, file these away with a flat file. Clean lubrication system grooves and holes after completing work.

Check the quality of the fuel mixture!

A fuel mix of 92 octane gasoline and air-cooled two-stroke engine oil in the ratio specified by the engine manufacturer is recommended. There is a wide range of chain saw oils: semi-synthetic, smokeless, rust-preventive. These protect the spark plug from soot deposits on the surface of the spark plug, which is essential for good chain saw performance.

Depth limiter adjustment

There is a popular belief that the cutting depth limiter can be cut off to allow the cutter to gather more wood, thus increasing the cutting speed. This is a misconception. This modification causes premature wear of the cutting attachment and, even more importantly, leads to saw breakage over time due to the increased load on the motor unit.

In order to ensure that cutting in frosty conditions runs smoothly and that the cutting links do not wear out too quickly, we recommend that you reduce the sharpening angle by 5° or 10° from the normal 30°.

Sawing in frozen wood (e.g. when logging in winter, working in the homestead or performing certain municipal tasks) is fraught with premature wear of the saw system and metal tearing around the axial holes of the cutting links. Simply dilute the oil you use by 25% with straight diesel or straight kerosene.

Kickback is one of the most common causes of serious work-related injuries with power saws. It occurs either when the nose of the bar comes into contact with an object or when the saw chain is clamped in the saw. In the first case, the guide bar may bounce sharply upward in an arc toward the operator, and in the second case, it may bounce in a straight line toward the operator. In both situations control of the saw can be lost and can cause serious injury to the operator and bystanders.

The top of the bar nose is known as the Kickback DANGER ZONE.

Modern saws have several safety mechanisms that are designed to minimize the risk of kickback injuries. These are the chain brake, straight (left) hand guard, bar tip guard, and kickback reduction devices on saw chains and guide bars. It is important to understand that for all safety systems and mechanisms to function properly, your saw must be completely assembled and set up according to instructions and must be free of loose or badly worn components.

Chainsaw Leaking Bar Oil All Over The Place Repair

OREGON recommends the use of low kickback chains at all times and change to conventional chains only when necessary and with sufficient experience. Before operating any chainsaw, be sure to read the manufacturer’s operating and safety manual carefully.

Chainsaw Basics: Fuel and Oil

I want to use TAD 17 on a STIHL 250 chain saw. It’s very thick in winter. I don’t know if it’s bad for the oil pump or if it’ll break down because of overloading? And if you can. What is the principle, in the pump, of feeding oil to the chain?

The oil pump that is installed on 180-250 electric chains is almost indestructible, it has a brass cylinder. Even the exhaust is twice as long as the aluminum ones.

And the principle of operation is very simple. I wish I had an illustration, and I haven’t seen it anywhere. If the words are two parts, the cylinder and the plunger that rotates in it. The plunger has a milled flat on the end. Plunger moves back and forth slightly as it rotates.

Two holes are made in the cylinder against each other. When the plunger’s flange comes up to the intake port, it pulls slightly out of the cylinder. creating a vacuum and sucking in some oil.

when the flats are turned to the discharge port, the plunger slides into the cylinder. pressure is created, oil flows through the channel to the bar. As you can see, in principle you can’t damage the pump with as much thick oil as you want. it just won’t go, that’s all. _

If oil leaks out of the tank when the chainsaw is idle, that’s normal? Т.е. If you have to saw a little, you should also fill it up a little? Otherwise the oil will run out of the tank while the saw is not used.

No. This is not normal. The problem is either with the oil pump or the reservoir itself. In general, oil and fuel consumption is usually 1 to 1. _

How to lubricate the drive sprocket on the chain saw?? Is Mobil or Jcb hydraulic grease good for example?? What do you reckon??

Can I use two-stroke oil to lubricate the chain??

If the instructions do not specify a particular brand, you can mix gasoline with any two-stroke oil that is available in stores. I still recommend buying products from reputable manufacturers, like STIHL or Husqvarna, but also, for example, Echo, Hitachi, Makita.

You can also use car oil for the electric chain saw, but I still recommend to use a special oil. The bottom line is that if you use the proper oil, the tire and chain will last much longer.
