How to saw evenly with a circular saw hand

Wood is used in many different industries. This raw material has always been popular, thanks to its versatility, ease of extraction and processing. From wood they make furniture, furnishings, and even entire houses.

Any craftsman faces with this material, but, as practice shows, to accurately saw a board is not everyone. Chips or nicks are often left on the cut after tools, which doesn’t add to your product’s beauty. So what’s better, to saw with your own hands or order?

Many companies offer to saw your boards at the time of purchase, in addition, the price of this service is not too excessive. A qualified master makes the sawing of boards on the exact equipment, which allows to get the quality blanks of the required size and shape.

Of course, you can buy expensive equipment yourself, but is it worth it if you need to saw a few boards. The choice is yours alone, but if you do decide to saw boards at home, then I will tell you how and with what to do it more conveniently.

Types of work

The scope of a circular saw depends on its size and type.

Hand circular saw

These power saws are designed for making precise, straight cuts in thin lumber. Manual circular saws are small in size and most often used for home work.

Small-sized equipment for sawing wood is necessary in the interior decoration of houses. Often handheld circular saws are used during repairs to cut laminate or wall finishing material.

Circular machine

Stationary circular saws are equipment for daily use. Such professional machines can cut large amounts of wood in a day. They have a fairly large weight. more than 10 kilograms and high power up to 2500 watts.

Circular saw

Circular saws are used mainly in manufacturing plants for industrial purposes. The cost of such a device is quite high. Some small models of circular equipment also have the function of stationary use. They are used successfully in home workshops.

How to properly sharpen a circular saw

For unobstructed cross-cutting sawing of bulky wood, decorative plywood and other sheet and board materials, change the standard 24-tooth disk, which most models are equipped with, to a disk with 50-60 teeth.

And for most sawing, when quality requirements are not very high, use a disk with 40 teeth. How to work with so use before you start sawing with a circular saw. And only for longitudinal sawing of bulky wood, install the standard 24-tooth blade again.

Get rid of the chips in one of three ways

The teeth of the circular saw blade turn forward and upward. The underside of the workpiece, where the tines enter the material, is almost always free of chips. On the contrary, the upper side is usually so disfigured by chips that it can not be used in visible parts of the product (compare the three photos with different degrees of severity of chips).

Make a saw cut in two passes instead of one. The 1st shallow pass will cleanly cut the wood fibers near the surface and they will not be torn up in the final cut.

How to saw smoothly with a circular saw

One way to ensure a straight, perpendicular cut with a circular saw is to make a simple attachment like this. It’s easy to make and can be made in a couple of hours. As materials it is quite possible to use scraps of boards and plywood, which are usually available in the joinery workshop.

The guides ensure a straight saw feed, and the side stops ensure a good hold on the workpiece.

Cutting quality in this case is comparable to that of a coping saw.

When sawing different materials and making blanks for building structures, a straight cut is essential. On an industrial scale this is achieved with large professional machines. But how do you achieve a smooth cut with a hand tool??

The most suitable tool for a straight cut, can be called a circular saw. Circular saws have a special groove on the bottoms of the saw for precision cutting. As a rule these are two notches, one for sawing workpieces at the angle of 90 degrees and the second at the angle of 45 degrees.

After we have outlined the line of the cut, we put a slit on the line and guide the saw along the outlined line. To prevent sawdust from getting on the cut line, many saws have a blower from the electric motor fan directed to the kerf.

I must say that some saw models have special lasers, which are not hindered by sawdust, as the laser beam is shining on the workpiece from above. Besides circular saws are equipped with a special stop on which there is a ruler, thanks to it you can set the width of the workpiece and leaning on the flat edge of the board make a precise cut.

When cutting a board crosswise, it is possible to use special devices that can be set at different angles. Some saws in the professional series have a special groove in the base plate. This groove is superimposed on the guide rail. The saw slides on the rail and makes a smooth cut.

For simpler models, circular saws, it is best to use a flat rail. The rail should be secured to the board, with two screw clamps. Then leaning on the rail with the edge of the circular saw blade you can make a precise cut.

When making a homemade guide, you can use both improvised means, made on industrial machines, and aluminum rules. At the same time you can make a special stand with three bearings or stops, which then can be attached to the base of the circular saw. The stops, or bearings, will slide evenly over the rule and that will be the guide for making a straight cut.Author RVT

If you often have to saw large wooden workpieces. thick boards or boards of carpentry. you can’t do without a circular saw. You just need to handle it skillfully. The slightest mistake can lead to the fact that the rapidly rotating saw blade will cut through the wood in the wrong way, and the work will have to either remake or start over.

Even a beginner can correctly saw a wooden workpiece with an ordinary hacksaw the first time, if he has a steady hand and an accurate eye. These qualities are no longer sufficient with the circular saw. The saw blade rotates too quickly to be able to make adjustments to its advance over the workpiece at any time. Only with careful preparation for work and correct handling of the circular saw during use can you expect good results. A guide rail or a guide ruler is also needed, i.e. a device that makes it possible to guide the machine precisely along the set line, without letting it swing sideways.

During the preparation it is very important to choose the correct saw blade and cutting depth, both of which have to correspond exactly to the material structure and thickness of the material to be sawn.
