How to use the lawnmower correctly
Lawnmower care: using the lawnmower correctly is the best way to ensure a long life
Today lawn mowers for grass occupy an honorable place in the market of lawn care machinery and this is not surprising, because the optimal price and high performance level can not leave indifferent a large part of the population of different countries. At the moment different manufacturers have presented a huge number of equipment of this direction.
The range of models is huge and varied. But it is worth noting that gasoline lawnmowers on manual control are in particular demand. The reason for this is low cost. But also these tools have a number of disadvantages, which we will actually talk about in this article.
over, the best models of manual mowers will be presented to your attention. And who knows, maybe you will choose for yourself the best variant of “helper” for the care of your garden. So, let’s get down to brass tacks.
Types and construction of trimmers
Depending on the power source for the engine, grass trimmers are divided into gasoline and electric. The first type is equipped with a tank for fuel and lubrication, the second works on the mains or battery.
The gasoline grass trimmer for the grass
All elements of the device are mounted on a long metal bar. On its upper end is the gasoline tank, the internal combustion engine and the starter for starting it. At the lower end is a spindle that rotates counterclockwise. It is fitted with a spool of fishing line or sharp knives (toothed discs) made of steel or plastic. Inside the boom, which is a hollow tube, there is a rigid or flexible shaft that transmits the rotation from the engine to the tool.
For your information! If the rod is straight, a rigid shaft is used that connects to the gearbox above the spindle and transmits torque to it from the drive. If the boom is curved, there is no gearbox, and a flexible shaft is used.
In the middle of the rod is located handle-holder, which can be D-shaped or bifurcated, similar to a bicycle handlebar. Asymmetric folding handles (as Husqarna brushcutters) are very convenient. Buttons and levers for controlling the trimmer are located on the handle or boom. Motor, control elements and spool/disc are connected by means of a flexible cord. The sprayer boom can be solid, collapsible or telescopic. The length of the last two types can be changed to adjust to the individual’s height. Some models have belt holders for lap belts. A blade or spool (bobbin) is covered with a visor to protect the person mowing the grass.
Cutting tool is a spool with a trimmer line (cord, string) of 2-3 mm diameter wound around it. In some models the line for the trimmer is wound with a reserve, and with a light impact on a hard surface, it automatically extends from the bobbin. Other trimmers have a piece of cord inserted in the reel, and the excess length is cut off against the sharp edge of the shroud.
In addition to the fishing line, some brushcutters come standard with a sharp-toothed disc. The shape of the teeth can be different. To cut down branches and bushes, a knife nozzle or a cutter similar to a circular saw disk is used.
Also for your information! other attachments can be added to some trimmer models: a brush, a chain saw, a soil cultivator.
Controlling a petrol trimmer
On the actuator is a rotary knob that pushes or closes the air damper. It is used to start the engine faster, for example, to warm it up when it is cold outside. Other regulators are on the handle-holder or boom of the device:
- throttle trigger. controls the carburetor flap to change the amount of fuel flowing into the drive;
- Stop button. designed to break the ignition circuit, stops the engine;
- a button to prevent unintentional pulling of the throttle trigger. located under the stop button
- Gas trigger stopper. without it you have to use your finger to hold the starter lever for longer periods of work.
Electric grass trimmer design
In general electric trimmers are similar to lawnmowers: the motor, the handle and the cutting element are attached to the shaft.
For your information! Grass trimmers may have an electric motor at the top, on the end of the bar, or at the bottom, above the cutting mechanism cover. No gearbox in the second case.
You need to plug the power tool into the outlet, so for mowing large areas will need an extension cord. Whereas the operating radius of a cordless electric mower does not depend on the length of the cable, but the batteries need to be recharged and replaced in time.
Instead of a starter motor, electric mowers have an on/off button. On them, unlike gasoline counterparts, you can not adjust the number of spindle speed, so the control buttons on the device is much less.
To recap! Both types of trimmers have a cutting width of 22-42 cm with a cutting line. When using discs or blades, it is directly related to the diameter of the mowing head.
PRINCIPLE: PROPER USE
The rest, the most important rules of operation, are identical for electric and gasoline lawnmowers:
- When operating the lawnmower, always follow the instructions, especially paying attention to when to take a break. For example, a pause in time can cause the lawn mower to overheat and lead to problems resulting from the lawn mower.
- After you finish mowing the lawn, do not forget to remove grass residue from the deck and blades each time.
- Be sure to keep the mower in a heated and dry room and keep it free of weather precipitation.
- After work do not forget to turn off the equipment, because its spontaneous movements can lead not only to the damage of the lawn, but also to become a threat to you and your family. Never inspect or repair the machine while the engine is running.
- If you notice any damage (cracks, chipping, dents), contact a professional service center for diagnosis. A problem detected in time will not lead to serious damage and will therefore not cost you money.
- If the lawn is heavily neglected and the grass is tall, do not cut it in one pass. This will put more strain on the engine and the blades of grass will work less efficiently, it is better to go several times, removing the grass gradually.
- In order to avoid blunting the blades by touching the ground, it is necessary to level out uneven patches of ground before mowing.
- For quality mowing, drive the mower slowly and only forwards (the blade design is designed to mow in one direction only).
- To avoid possible injury, use the lawnmower only with shoes on and preferably no exposed body parts. As the knife can fall on a stone and bounce back on you.
- It is desirable not to use a lawn mower near trees, poles, curbs, there it is very easy to dull and break the blades. In such places, a garden shears or grass trimmer will be more effective.
- If you want to have a striped lawn (stripes on the lawn alternate bright and dark colors of grass), you should mow, constantly changing the direction, and a special roller should be installed on the mower.
In the following sections we will talk about how to service and care for lawn mowers. It is very important to know some nuances of rules for the care of mowing tools.
How to properly care for your lawn mower
Buying a lawn mower and using it properly is only part of the job. It is extremely important to follow the rules of care for this technique. And that’s what we will talk about in this article. It’s a highly specialized piece of equipment, and the care in this case is also quite specific. Care, cleaning, timely maintenance. you just can’t do without it.
Electric and petrol lawnmowers. the specifics
Before we start discussing the peculiarities of maintenance of the technique, let’s consider their two main types:
- Electric lawn mowers are ideal if you plan to mow the grass only near the house, where you will have constant access to electricity. An important feature of these models. long service life and low engine wear.
- Gasoline lawnmowers. for work on remote from the mains. Good autonomy and rather low fuel consumption make them a good option.
We recommend your choice depending on where and under what conditions you plan to use the mower. But in general it is worth noting that electric models are more economical and run quieter. But in this case you sacrifice mobility. Plus, every time before use, it is recommended to check if the power cord is intact, there are no defects in the socket, etc.д. And for safety reasons electric lawn mowers should not be used in rain or dew.
It is worth mentioning that petrol mowers are noticeably more productive than electric ones. If you use one, make sure that there is enough fuel in the tank before starting, and there is also oil for the engine. Without it, the engine will simply jam. Repairs are very expensive.
How to use a trimmer properly
Lawn trimmers are notable for their efficiency. Beginners think that working with a lawnmower is easy, because you only need to plug it in or pour fuel, but this is not quite true.
The efficiency and lifespan of a garden tool depend on its operating conditions. Therefore, before you use a grass trimmer, you need to make preparations.
The lawn to be mowed is carefully inspected. Glass and large stones must be removed. If they fly out from under the working mower, they can injure a person. Remove the wire from the lawn, because it can get caught in the rotating element, breaking the mower.
After that proceed to installing the cutting system. There are small power grass trimmers on sale that use only a line for the trimmer. It is designed for mowing juicy and soft grass. But there are models with power more than 1 kilowatt, on which metal blades are installed. They cut thistles and other tough weeds, trim young shrubs.
In order to replace the cord with knives, you need to unscrew the fastening nut, install the cutting element. Then you need to put the nut back in place, tighten it with the wrench.
The operator should take care of his safety. Wear tight protective clothing when mowing. Use special glasses to protect your eyes, they will protect you from dust, grass, and flying debris. Cover your hands with gloves.
Plug in the electric grass trimmer, and charge the battery-powered models for a few hours before use. The gasoline mower is filled with fuel.
The mower is held so that the bobbin or blade is parallel to the ground. When the machine is in the right position, start the engine. Once the grass is cut, turn the mower off.
Before the first start-up, the operator assembles the mower, the procedure is described in the instructions that come with the product.
If the grass trimmer is petrol, it must be checked before use. Fill fuel tank up to the neck.
The engine needs to get used to the fuel, so let it run for a few minutes without any load the first time it is started. After that start mowing the grass.
It is mandatory to run-in the gasoline mowers before operation. The operator turns the motor on, it has to idle for a while. It is necessary to make sure that the motor does not overheat, the load should not be.
With the brushcutter running in, gradually increase the workload. If you start at high engine rpm, the engine will not run in properly, and the mower will not work properly afterwards.
When starting for the first time, do not exhaust the entirety of the machine’s time allowance. After the engine has worked at idle speed, you can proceed to the treatment of the lawn. Let the machine run for no more than 15 minutes. Then turn the engine off and allow it to cool down.
If it is necessary to make a run-in of the electric trimmer, the scythe is first assembled. Then at least 3 to 5 test runs. If the engine runs well, go on to mowing. At first work no more than 5 minutes, then the duration of work is gradually increased.
How to put the belt on
If the tool has a shoulder mount, it is hinged on the shoulder before starting work. If you have a knapsack attachment, attach the grass trimmer on both shoulders.
The model with a bike handle is held with 2 hands; the D-handle is placed around the palm of the hand. The belt should be put on comfortably so it won’t tire your back.
How to cut the grass to make it even
To cut the grass evenly, the mower should be lowered as much as possible while working. The lawn should be divided into squares. Work in clockwise motion. That way the grass will always lie to the left and not get in the way.
Mowing in hay
The best way to cut grass is not with a fishing line, but with a metal disc. Grass is cut at the root, keeping its length as short as possible.
Mowing tall grass
If tall grass is to be mowed, it must be done in several stages. The lawn is cultivated in 2-3 times. The rotating part is lowered from top to bottom, in this case the grass is not wound up on the spool.
The operator must be aware that grass wound up on the reel causes the motor to overheat. If this happens, switch the brushcutter off and clean the spool.
The best cutting results are achieved with the tip of the line, not the full cut. In the second case, the tool works worse, overloading of the engine is possible. If you mow large areas of grass, the grass trimmer should be tilted toward the mowing area to be more efficient.
Operating in damp conditions
Electric mowers should not be used in the rain, they may short-circuit. When it has stopped raining you must wait until the grass has dried.
Not all petrol mowers are fitted with protection against moisture, that’s why some manufacturers forbid mowing in rain.
An electric ride-on grass trimmer may not be used for more than 20 minutes, after that you must take a break for the same amount of time. Violation of the operating mode negatively affects the engine, reducing its service life.
Gasoline mowers last from 40 minutes to 1 hour, and professional tools can cut the grass until the fuel runs out. A break of at least 20 minutes between work.

The reliability of the lawnmower, as well as the quality of grass mowing depends directly on the correct and regular maintenance, which requires an understanding of its structure and the meaning of certain actions.
In this article, we talked about how to properly start the lawn mower engine, how to properly maintain such equipment, and also showed how proper or improper maintenance affects its reliability and mowing quality.
Owners of suburban and country houses are familiar with the problem of maintaining a personal area aesthetically. A lot of effort goes into mowing the grass and mowing the lawn. Automate such processes with electric and gasoline trimmers.
Let’s take a closer look at one of these devices.
Lawn mowers must be stored in dry, well-ventilated areas. No preparations are necessary for short-term storage, just roll the appliance into its intended location and fold the handle.
If the storage time exceeds a couple of months, then the device must be prepared, for which the following steps are performed:
Gasoline and oil drainage
This operation is necessary for two reasons:
- fuels and lubricants lose some of their characteristics during prolonged storage, so starting the engine after a long downtime with gasoline or oil left over from the current year’s use can cause serious damage to the engine and reduce its service life.
- If the machine has to be turned upside down or placed upright during storage, fuel and lubricants can leak out, then they will stain the floor and housing of the mower, fill the room with a heavy oil odor, and pose a fire hazard.
The method of draining these fluids depends on the design of the lawnmower and is described in detail in the Instruction Manual.
If there is no manual, you should put the mower on the table (drain fuel and lubricants in this way only after the engine has cooled down), tilt it sideways at a 45 degree angle and carefully inspect the engine and fuel tank from below in search of drain holes. If there is no oil leakage, first unscrew the fuel cap and turn the mower upside down so that the petrol runs out and then screw the fuel cap back on.
Before draining the oil you need to pull the recoil starter 5-10 times without turning on the ignition so that the oil pump gives grease to all the engine parts that rub, as a result they will be protected against moisture till the spring. Then you need to unscrew the cap of the oil-filler neck and turn the machine upside down again until all fluids pour out and then put the cap back on.
Some mower models are equipped with engines, which manufacturers claim do not need oil changes, but only oil topping up. This is not a very fair statement, because the engine can run on the old oil, which is constantly topped up with new oil, but only for a limited time, for example 500 or 1000 hours.
This engine life is just enough for the entire warranty period, declared by the manufacturer (usually 2-5 years), after which the probability of engine damage is high, while if you change the oil the engine can run for 10-20 years without repair.
Therefore, to drain or not to drain the oil before the winter in mowers with this engine, everyone has to decide individually.
If the engine is filled with quality oil, corresponding to it according to SAE and other parameters, you can not only drain the old oil, but also pour in new oil, but this procedure should be performed on a hot engine, so it is applicable only where there is a special hole for this.
Then wash the oil filter (if it’s installed on the model and can be washed) in diesel or gasoline, fill it with new oil and then, without turning on the ignition, pull the cable of the recoil starter 5-10 times to lubricate all the rubbing parts of the engine with new oil.
Drying the housing
Proper maintenance means washing the housing after each use, because of which there is a high probability that water droplets left on the housing may freeze in winter and damage the paintwork or moving parts. Therefore before leaving the mower for (winter) long periods of storage it is necessary to thoroughly blow out the housing from all sides with a blower, paying particular attention to the joints of the wheel axles and the bushings that carry out the bearing function.
If the wheel axles are mounted on bearings, the bearings should be thoroughly blown from all accessible directions to remove even the smallest particles of moisture from them.
Preservation of rods and bearings
It is necessary to treat the inner surface of all cable drives (rods) with WD-40 fluid to remove water from them, and then using a syringe pour 0.2-0.5 cm3 of engine oil into them.
If you do not do this, after 3-5 years there is a high probability that the cables will start to jam, which will lead to the inability to reset the engine in time and other problems.
Some mower models are equipped with bearings and plain bearings (shaft-hub) lubricated with special grease nipples. Before the winter, such bearings should be filled with grease recommended by the manufacturer, using a syringe for maintenance (greasing) of the chassis of older cars.
Checking and resharpening the blade
The sharper the blade, the less the stress on the engine, and thus the longer its life. The most important condition when sharpening the blade is to keep the balance, because if one side turns out to be heavier than the other even by half a gram, it will lead to strong runout, which negatively affects the service life of crankshaft bearings.
To check the alignment, the cutter blade can be placed on a 1-2 mm thick plate vertically clamped in a vice. If the balance is correct, the balance will be achieved when the plate is exactly in the middle of the cutter blade.
If it is offset to the side, more metal is removed from this side when sharpening, constantly checking the balance. You can also take the knife for sharpening to a specialized workshop engaged in the repair and maintenance of gasoline lawnmowers, or install a new one instead.
In any case, before installing a sharpened or new blade, it is advisable to check its balance, because it is many times easier and cheaper than changing bearings and engine crankshaft, broken because of an unbalanced blade.
A cheap way to create a high-end lawn
According to some sources mulching was invented by English gardeners. When it was forbidden to use hoses for watering, they began to cover green lawns with shredded vegetation.
Today it is called lawn mulching. It involves several procedures:
This regulates the temperature balance in the lawn during the cold season. Retains moisture during hot summers. Fertilizing the soil with nutrients. Protecting the area from weeds.
If you look closely at the root zone of a plant, you can see how it successfully develops and bushes. The sod layer also becomes much thicker and more dense. Because top-quality, fertile soil has always been the basis for healthy green spaces.
In regions where there are harsh winters, it is desirable to create a thick layer of turf.
HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
4.1. In case of injury, machine malfunction immediately stop the engine. 4.2. Whenever an accident occurs, the injured person or an eyewitness must notify the foreman or another official. Give first aid to the injured person on the spot and take him or her to a medical center. If possible, preserve the surroundings of the accident. 4.3. You may only work again after the machine has been repaired and the possibility of injury has been eliminated with the knowledge or permission of the foreman.
To ensure a positive user experience, there are a few important safety precautions to follow:
- Before starting work it is advisable to check whether there is a foreign object in the area: a stone, a branch.
- Warn bystanders, especially children, beforehand not to come closer than 5 meters to a working machine.
- Wear suitable eyeglasses with a special frame only to avoid any eyesight problems.
- Visually inspect the machine for damage to the housing or loose parts. Rectify faults as quickly as possible.
- Observe grass-cutting regulations. Do not cut the grass higher than 20 centimeters. Do not mow grass more than 1/3 at a time.
- If you work on a slope it is recommended to walk along the hill. Do not use the “up/down” technique.
- Stop the motor when you change the height of the bevel.
- If any foreign object gets into the mower, which hinders the operation of the device, it is necessary to immediately stop the device and clean the blades.
Please note! In the first place, non-compliance with the rules can lead to health problems and technicians.
It is safe to say that the petrol lawnmower is worthy of respect, both in terms of its power and the quality of work it performs. It is important to follow all of the above mentioned rules and recommendations for care, operation and safety. This will help to ensure that the machine is durable, functional.
