How to check the ignition coil on the trimmer with a multimeter

There is no doubt that the starting system of any machine is the most important part of starting it. And the question: how to check the ignition coil on the trimmer. should occur to its owner, regardless of the presence of a breakdown or its good condition. Independently do it is quite realistic, and how to implement conceived. we describe in detail and clearly demonstrate in the instructional video. In STIHL trimmers, the coil mechanism is checked identically, and is also called “magneto” in all tools. Experts advise to pay attention to the fact that the malfunction of the tool itself is often not directly related to the coil and vice versa, so its check should take place regardless of the state of the entire device. Before checking the operation it is necessary to assess its condition according to the following points:

  • check if there are no cracks or other defects on the body itself;
  • The absence of dirt on the current-conducting nodes and other elements;
  • The condition of high-voltage wires: the absence of rust, the reliability of attachment, the presence of contact;
  • the spark plug cap should be securely attached to the high-voltage wire;
  • whether the spark plug is working, maybe it is flooded or with a huge layer of soot;
  • whether the circuit breaker works, especially if you have a grass trimmer made in China;

If everything is all right with these components of the grass trimmer, you can move on to the examination of the coil itself, namely, to measure the resistance. If you know the resistance parameters of its windings, then this method is acceptable to you. the procedure should be done with the high-voltage and minus wire. After “testing” the device may show a high resistance or a “Open Circuit” reading, and if the chain is tested, it shows a malfunction. You can also check with a special tester, called an ohmmeter, to determine if the spark is there. It needs to be placed between the high-voltage wire of the coil and the spark plugs. Read about other ways to do this in the next section. If it is not repairable, then a new magneto is quickly available in the appropriate section of the store spare parts for lawnmowers.

About the chainsaw and how it doesn’t work

The chainsaw. the installation itself is not so complicated. But having at least the basic knowledge is essential to find and fix any defect.

Modern electronics has progressed so much that it has revolutionized the tool world as well. Today’s saws are lightweight and powerful at the same time and have electronic ignition systems.

Not so long ago saw ignition systems were cam. This carried a lot of disadvantages: heavy, complicated, expensive and more. And the most important disadvantage of the archaic ignition system is the difficulty of starting. Some saw models systems could not produce a spark at all, sufficient to flash at the crankshaft speed.

Today’s systems are almost fail-safe. Saw models are light and durable, the coil is made more professional and serves its service life practically without fail. However, problems do occur, but in most cases they can be fixed by your own efforts.

Let’s look at the main types of chainsaw malfunctions related to the flywheel and ignition system.

As a rule, the most common ailment of modern chainsaws, involves a lack of supply spark. The same directly depends on the clearance (gap) between the reel and the handwheel.

Common installation failures are always associated with the internal combustion engine. Problems occur in the ignition system, the fuel intake module, the internal components of the engine itself.

As for other chainsaw parts, failures there are usually caused by brake mechanism failures, poor lubrication, etc.д.

If starting difficulties are related to the engine, the most common symptoms are:

As always, experts recommend identifying fault factors by the method of elimination. In other words, it is necessary to go through the chain, diagnosing each node, each link.

Ignition module

Failure of the chainsaw NW is the most common reason why the engine of the tool does not start. It is recommended in most cases to start troubleshooting from here.

  • First of all, carefully check the spark plug, carefully removing the armor wire from the head and unscrewing the spark plug from the socket with a special wrench;
  • The second is to check the supply of spark by jerking the starter with the armature cap put on the spark plug;
  • check the gap. the main topic of our article (more below).

So, the malfunction of the spark plug will clearly indicate its wetness. Wet spark device to ignite the air-fuel mixture indicates that there is too much fuel in the system, the carburetor is not properly set, or there are problems with the SP.

Check the spark plug only after it has dried out. Т.е., it is necessary to clean it well with a napkin, dry the inside of the internal combustion engine, plug the supply line and then start the starter a couple of times to let the surplus of combustible mixture out.

Then the spark plug is put back in place and everything is checked again.

In general, the spark device can tell a lot about the entire ignition system. If there is black carbon on the spark plug it is an indication of a malfunction in the petrol mixture supply lines. Here either the petrol to oil ratio is wrong or the carburetor needs to be readjusted. In some cases, it is also due to low-quality oil.

A dirty spark plug is cleaned of black carbon deposits with a needle or other sharp object. Then clean the electrode with sandpaper (zerosandpaper) until a metallic sheen appears. The spark unit is put back in place, everything is checked again.

Next step: Checking the spark arrester. The sparker’s skirt is led to the cylinder, the starter starts. If a bluish spark at a distance of 2-3 mm pops in, everything is normal. A spark gap of 0.5-1 mm is already considered a malfunction. Maybe there is no spark at all, and that is a big problem. Maybe it’s a broken wire.

And here we come to the subject of our article. The chainsaw may not start because of a gap between the ignition and the flywheel magneto. This very gap should be within 0.2 mm. Checked very simply: a special gasket is placed between the flywheel and the cylinder. If it is normal, not too loose and tight, the gap is normal.

The saw flywheel itself is round, and you can’t check it with an ordinary feeler gauge. It would be more qualified to set the clearance with a special pattern, but it is not always possible to get it. And not everyone can afford to buy an expensive template for a single use.

However, instead of the bourgeois template, you can use a cut-out strip from a 1-2 liter plastic container from under the juice.

Advice. It is advisable to cut the plastic band where there are no irregularities in relief.

Why ignition adjustment is needed

In some cases, when the engine does not start, it will be necessary to adjust the ignition. Of course, you must first check the serviceability of the spark plug and the high-voltage cable with the cap.

Adjust the ignition on the two-stroke engine needed to ensure timely ignition of fuel in the engine combustion chamber. Below is a diagram, from which you can understand the principle of the internal combustion engine.

A spark should appear at the moment of fuel compression by the piston, when it does not reach the top dead center. When the piston passes TDC, the fuel mixture ignites, causing the piston to move downward under the action of explosive energy.

Therefore, if for any reason (mainly due to a shift of the flywheel on the shaft relative to its original position) fuel ignition occurs before the piston passes TDC, it goes back and the crankshaft is cranked in the opposite direction. Such movement can damage the starter assembly, break the starter cord, etc.д. In this case there is an early ignition of fuel.

There can also be late ignition on the trimmer: the piston goes down after compression of the fuel, which is not ignited, and at this moment there is a spark. In this case, the engine will either not start or will lose power significantly and will not pick up speed well.

But such problems with early or late ignition on two-stroke engines are quite rare, because the flywheel with magnets is already set in the right position, which is perfectly synchronized with the movement of the piston. In addition, the flywheel is fixed to the shaft with a key and a nut. Therefore, improper setting of the part is impossible.

Basically, ignition adjustment consists of adjusting the correct gap between the magneto and the flywheel.

Why a good spark is needed.

The quality of the spark determines its ability to ignite a properly formed air-fuel mixture in working conditions. A weak spark at high pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber cannot do this. Ignition occurs later or not at all. There is unevenness in the work of the engine, the engine does not gain speed, there is vibration, detonation, in the starter may appear the effect of “backfire”.

The insidiousness of such a failure is that the diagnosis below does not give one hundred percent confidence in the performance of the ignition coil. Such an implicit failure, when the spark seems to be there, but it is not quite right, is often misleading and makes you write off problems with the ignition coil to a carburetor malfunction. Typical actions in such cases are to increase the fuel supply. It turns out that such a spark can ignite an enriched mixture, but not a proper one. But the use of enriched mixture leads to rapid wear of the cylinder-piston group and muffler. That’s why it’s a good idea to check both the carburetor and the ignition coil in such questionable situations.

Prevention of the problem

Frequently, ignition coil failures are caused by short circuits or breaks in the windings and mechanical damage of the magneto body. This occurs due to hard knocks, fluid ingress and oxidation, as well as overheating. If you avoid such incidents, you can not worry about the integrity of the ignition coil.

ignition, coil, clearance

Important! To prevent regular failure of the plugs. one of the most important components of the ignition system. you need to fill with quality fuel. Bad fuel ruins these parts.

One of the nodes of the magneto that regularly suffer in use are the high-voltage wires, through which the current flows to the plugs from the ignition module. They have a long life, but are damaged by their own users by careless handling when changing plugs, carelessly pulling the wire itself, not the tip. Another problem that can happen to them is moisture and oxidation or damage to the insulation. These problems can be avoided by pulling the plug out carefully and avoiding any liquid getting inside the unit.

So, the repair of the ignition coil is not very difficult and can be done by the user himself, but subject to the above procedure for disassembly and replacement of magneto or chopper contacts.

Why you need a good spark.

The quality of the spark determines its ability to ignite a properly formed air-fuel mixture under operating criteria. A weak spark under the high pressure and temperature criteria in the combustion chamber cannot do it. Ignition occurs later or not at all. There is a bulge in the work of the engine, the engine does not pick up speed, there is vibration, detonation, in the starter can appear effect of “revolving stroke”.

The insidiousness of such a failure is that the diagnosis of the following methods does not give a 100 percent confidence in the performance of the ignition coil. Such an implicit failure when the spark seems to be, but it is not quite right, often misleading and forced to write off difficulties with the ignition coil malfunction carburetor. The usual actions in such cases are to increase the fuel supply. It turns out that such a spark can ignite the enriched mixture, but not the right one. But the introduction of enriched consistency leads to severe wear of the cylinder-piston group and muffler. So in such a controversial situation once again check and carburetor and ignition coil

What line should I choose for my trimmer?

Before you stock up on this material to put in your grass trimmer, you need to decide on the. After all, the usual so-called round line for the trimmer is not the only type that exists. How to choose the most suitable one? To begin with, you must determine the working conditions.

Choice of type. Round mowing line is the most common trimmer line. It will fit any coil, with the rarest of exceptions. This type of consumable material is suitable for mowing fresh, succulent grass. But with the mowing of the so-called dead wood, this kind can no longer cope. To try to mow bushes with this thread is pointless even to mention.

In addition to the usual type, there are others that have sharp edges. They are usually made “star” or “square”. The presence of sharp edges is the main feature and the key difference between these threads.

Precisely because of this feature, these types of threads are able to mow dry weeds. But pointed threads are not without disadvantages, the main of which can be called rapid wear and durability, noticeably inferior to the round type.

In addition to the already mentioned types of lines, there are other interesting and frequently encountered varieties. Particularly among them can be noted fishing lines, inside which a metal wire is stretched. Threads of this type are often used in gasoline-powered tools with an engine more powerful than one and a half horsepower.

Threads with a metal core come in both round cross-section and sharp-edged. Regardless of the type of cross-section, such threads are the best way to overcome hard-to-cut plants. Filaments belonging to this type can easily mow not only dry grass, but even small bushes.

Filaments with wire inside compare favorably with other types of consumables by their incredible durability. But unfortunately, this feature has more than a noticeable impact on the price of this type. The cost of threads with core is much higher than other types of threads.

The string does not extend

In automatic and semi-automatic reels, the cord is fed without stopping the grass trimmer. If it doesn’t, it means:

the line for the trimmer is not wound correctly in the head, so the spool does not spin; the filament is wound unevenly, so the cord gets stuck between the coils and does not come out. to avoid this, the filament must be wound carefully, without distortions, coil to coil; the ends of the cord coming out of the holes are very short, the centrifugal force is not enough to extract them, so the line for the trimmer does not come out. before turning on the grass trimmer it is important to necessarily adjust the length of the thread and lengthen it a little if necessary; the cord is stuck

Reel will not spin

Reasons for no spinning are similar to no line feed. The main disadvantages of the flame-cutting process are wrong or uneven spooling of the string, sticking of the string or short ends of the cord coming out of the holes.

How to catch more fish?

  • Single-string. The grass trimmer has only one working line for the trimmer. Used mainly for small jobs, such as trimming grass.
  • Two-string. Can be both automatic and automatic. This set includes two strings. This grass trimmer is used for mowing and clearing areas.

Instructions on how to correctly wind up the cutting line on the grass trimmer reel:

The first thing to do is to disassemble the head. To do this, you need to press the latch and turn the cover to the side

Measure the right amount of string and insert it into the slot.

Wind on both sides of the line for the trimmer in the direction of the arrow. You should leave the 15 cm long ends unreeled. These ends are inserted into opposite slots. Then the ends are fastened in the hole on the head.

If necessary, you can pull the remaining ends of the thread outward. To do this, first pull one end of the thread, and then the other so that they can easily pass through the slots on the head.

Now you should assemble the grooves on the body and screw the cover on.

Then press the bobbin and try to spin it as far as it will go

If you hear a click, it means the bobbin has clicked into place. Next, you need to pull the loose ends of the thread to the end.

After you have removed the bobbin from the head you need to disassemble it accurately. It is better to do it on the mowed area, because inside the coil there may be a spring, which will be quite difficult to find in the tall grass. Grass trimmer wiring diagram with half of an electric grass trimmer As you have seen. After disassembly, we will have three parts on hand: the body (top cover), protective cover and the spool itself.

How the trimming system works

The ignition system of a two-stroke internal combustion engine consists of 2 elements: the flywheel and the coil (magneto). The picture below shows what they look like.

On the flywheel is an impeller that acts as a fan to cool the engine. Also on one side of the flywheel are permanent magnets, shown with an arrow in the illustration.

When the flywheel rotates, an electric current is generated in the coil, which serves to create a spark on the spark plug. The spark appears when the magnets are directly under the magnet.

Ignition coil (magneto). Checking condition and adjustment of clearance.

We often encounter situations when users of the tool come with faulty ignition. It is not uncommon for it to turn out to be defective, but often the ignition coil has nothing to do with the instrument failure. Here are some notes on how to check the ignition coil.
