Ignition module

In general, the spark device can tell a lot about the entire ignition system. If there is black carbon on the spark plug it is an indication of a malfunction in the petrol mixture supply lines. A dirty spark plug is cleaned of black carbon deposits with a needle or other sharp object. Then clean the electrode with sandpaper (zerosandpaper) until a metallic sheen appears. The spark unit is put back in place, everything is checked again.

Next step: Checking the spark arrester. The sparker’s skirt is led to the cylinder, the starter starts. If a bluish spark at a distance of 2-3 mm pops in, everything is normal. A spark gap of 0.5-1 mm is already considered a malfunction. Maybe there is no spark at all, and that is a big problem. Maybe it’s a broken wire.

And here we come to the subject of our article. The chainsaw may not start because of a gap between the ignition and the flywheel magneto. This very gap should be within 0.2 mm. Checked very simply: a special gasket is placed between the flywheel and the cylinder. If it is normal, not too loose and tight, the gap is normal.

The saw flywheel itself is round, and you can’t check it with an ordinary feeler gauge. It would be more qualified to set the clearance with a special pattern, but it is not always possible to get it. And not everyone can afford to buy an expensive template for a single use.

However, instead of the bourgeois template, you can use a cut-out strip from a 1-2 liter plastic container from under the juice.

Advice. It is advisable to cut the plastic band where there are no irregularities in relief.

Why ignition adjustment is needed

In some cases, when the engine does not start, it will be necessary to adjust the ignition. Of course, you must first check the serviceability of the spark plug and the high-voltage cable with the cap.

A spark should appear at the moment of fuel compression by the piston, when it does not reach the top dead center. When the piston passes TDC, the fuel mixture ignites, causing the piston to move downward under the action of explosive energy.

Therefore, if for any reason (mainly due to a shift of the flywheel on the shaft relative to its original position) fuel ignition occurs before the piston passes TDC, it goes back and the crankshaft is cranked in the opposite direction. Such movement can damage the starter assembly, break the starter cord, etc.д. In this case there is an early ignition of fuel.

There can also be late ignition on the trimmer: the piston goes down after compression of the fuel, which is not ignited, and at this moment there is a spark. In this case, the engine will either not start or will lose power significantly and will not pick up speed well.

But such problems with early or late ignition on two-stroke engines are quite rare, because the flywheel with magnets is already set in the right position, which is perfectly synchronized with the movement of the piston. In addition, the flywheel is fixed to the shaft with a key and a nut. Therefore, improper setting of the part is impossible.

Basically, ignition adjustment consists of adjusting the correct gap between the magneto and the flywheel.

Why a good spark is needed.

The quality of the spark determines its ability to ignite a properly formed air-fuel mixture in working conditions. A weak spark at high pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber cannot do this. Ignition occurs later or not at all.
