Leatherworking Tools for Beginners
The revolver-type leather punch is more commonly used for braiding. It looks a lot like a metal-cutting pliers, only the head has a drum with six sharpened cones of different sizes from 1.4 to 5 mm. The leather workpiece is clamped between the punch and the anvil, the handles are compressed, and a hole of a given diameter is obtained.
Professional punching tools are made of stainless steel with a brass anvil and come with an opening spring and replaceable steel punches with a lifetime warranty. However, for different models there are restrictions on the thickness of the pierced material.

Leather tool set.
Hello all! I have to confess at once that I am an amateur in leatherwork, but lately I have become fond of it. After watching the videos on youtube, my enthusiasm only increased. Naturally, the first steps can be done with minimal quantities of tools from the nearest hardware store. But I managed to get a whole set of special tools for the review. Of course, the tools are Chinese. There are a few different kits on bangud. Because of the number of positions at first sight eyes are confused, and it is not clear which one is better to choose. Or take specific items individually. I took a set of the claimed 30 items and decided to use my own experience to figure out which of them are really necessary and which you can do without. Packed all this goodness in a plain cardboard box, and packed in bags The contents fit nicely on a piece of chipboard 60×40 cm I will begin, perhaps, from the description of all items in the set. I’m not sure if I’ll call it by its proper name, but I’ll try. I will open the list with these knives, because it is one of the basic tools in the craft. 1. So for cutting leather you can use this circular knife. Very sharp. Diameter of the disc is 45 mm, maximum cutting depth is up to 8 mm. Very good for straight cuts. It is also possible to cut in a curve, but with a large radius limit. Not least the thickness of the leather plays a role in this. The deeper the disk into the material. the more difficult it is to make shaped movements. The advantage of this knife is especially noticeable when cutting thin leather 0.8. 1.6 mm, because the material does not pull on the blade. Which allows you to make a more accurate cut, and the edge is smooth without any burrs and microcracks. No replaceable blades in the set, but it is no problem to buy them in domestic internet stores, although the are not happy with them. 2. Next on the list is a saddlery knife. Initially quite sharpened (one-sided sharpening), on one side of the blade there are characters. Blade width 35mm. Can be used for cutting leather, local thinning and rounding corners. Handy for straight line cuts. Curved cuts are also possible, but not small radii. Anyway, for me it’s more convenient to use a knife with classic cutting part arrangement. When working with the reviewed knife, its handle is practically at right angles to the workpiece. 3. Also available with collet knife. In addition to the blade that is already in it, there are five interchangeable blades in the kit Great for shape cutting. But, as for me, with thickness of material more than two millimeters. it’s already inconvenient to work. 4. Needle set. There are seven of them in the set. Directly for the leather, according to the information I found, correspond to two of them. What makes them stand out is their triangular wedge-shaped point. They are not particularly sharp, to prevent damage to the thread in, for example, saddle stitching. Also, there are two normal straight needles with a big eye, two twisted needles and a bag needle, with the characteristic flattened and bent point. Personally, at this stage, the first two are enough for me. 5. Groove cutter with adjustable stop. Used for grooving future stitches. Mostly used on thick leather. At first it seemed to me completely non-working, no matter how I tried it only scratched the material and made scuffs. Looking closely, I saw a burr on the cutting part after the factory sharpening (or where it is sharpened there) a little manipulation with sandpaper and order, but cuts well only a tough skin, with soft material is not always good. 6. Edge cutter. Needed to chamfer the edge of the leather to give a more aesthetic look to the product. Like the previous tool. works well on hard leather. Particularly useful when beveling the wrong (bahtarmian) side of the leather. 7. Tool for parallel seam line marking. Maximum width 20mm. It’s pretty useful. Unlike the groove cutter it has no sharp cutting part. And if not zealous when marking, the line can be smoothed after it. 8. 9. 10. Roller marker (copier). Used for marking out future seam holes. There are three of them in a set with different spacing. Two of them are blunt. they just leave marks on the leather, and one is sharp enough to make a hole in a thin material at once. The upper tool I rashly mutilated before photographed its original appearance. I can only say that it differed from the second one only in pitch. My barbaric actions were aimed at achieving a certain goal. The thing is, the first two tools had practically the same pitch. 2.4mm and 2.2mm respectively, the step of the third is 3.3mm. I got these values by dividing the length of the segment by the number of marks on it after marking with each tool. So having two tools with almost the same pitch, it seemed to me not logical, and the lack of marker with a pitch of 4 or 5 mm. a drawback. It was decided to correct this defect by removing the extra teeth from one of them. Armed with pliers. broke off the excess. I apologize for hurt feelings (I fixed it later by emery). And it would have worked, but I got a little confused and broke the teeth on the wrong one. As a result because of their odd number turned out here such a nonsense But never mind. Here’s a closeup of the other two. And this is what marker 11 looks like. The awl. Actually known to all the tool. The only difference from the usual one is the cone shape. With which you can make holes of different sizes. That’s all I have to say about it. 12. Another very useful and handy tool for making holes. According to the barcode. made in Japan. The device has six interchangeable nozzles with a diameter of 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm and 4mm. Used for making holes in belts and buckles. The advantage over the turret is that there is no limited step back from the edge of the workpiece. I use it to make the seam holes. It’s much better than an awl. To make the hole, you need to press the handle and through a screw groove in the working part. the progressive movement of the handle is converted into a rotational cutter. Of course it is hard to get a straight stitch, but that’s the way I’ve been working so far. I will come back to this later. 13. Another tool for edging, the bevel cutter (corner cutter) allows you to cut a corner of leather with even depth, rounding it off. The grooving cutter is designed for working with thick hard leather, the width of the cut stripe is 5 mm. Unfortunately, the sample of my set is disgustingly sharpened. I tried to correct this case, but I was not successful. 14. A router for working the fringe side of the leather. It’s designed to peel the skin back to the desired thickness before stitching. Complete with a set of ten interchangeable blades. Maybe because of the quality of the latter I could not fully appreciate the convenience of this tool. 15. 16. 17. Three more groove cutters. This time non-adjustable, that means without a stop. Sharp, works great on both soft and hard leather. No problem with the fleshy side. Although they have a different shape of the cutting part, the actual grooves are almost indistinguishable 18. I don’t know what this tool is called. And I can only hypothesize about its purpose. It is supposed to be used for embossing. It is poorly sharpened. 19 Wax. Used in the finishing of the product. It has both a decorative and practical function. closing the pores of the skin for moisture protection. The set contains a 40x40x15 mm piece. Pretty hard. It’s better to grind with it by preheating with a lighter. 20. 21. 22. Slickers for polishing the edge of the leather. There are three pieces of different configurations in the set. The round one is designed to be mounted on a dremel or an electric electric screwdriver. 23. 24. Waxed thread. The set includes two coils black and beige. Flat section, braided, width. about 1 mm. 25. 26. 27. 28. 29. And the last element. strips of sandpaper for polishing the edge of the leather. All five are of identical performance. have (at a glance) about 80 grit on one side and about 120 grit on the other. Which of the elements the Chinese consider the thirtieth. one can only guess. But the amount is not the joy. For full work this set lacks one very important element. the step puncher. Exactly with the help of this tool it is possible to reach smooth seams and exact matching of holes on all elements of the product. I would sacrifice a good half of the set for it. In the near future I’ll add these punches to my set of tools for sure. For now, as I wrote above, I use a hole punch. But I can’t make a straight seam with this method. Yes, and it takes quite a long time. Another device that I probably can’t do without in this craft is a saddlery pony. Actually this is a clamp for fixing all the elements of the piece while sewing. I made it in about 10 minutes from scraps of planks at hand. And so. After shredding a few pieces of old unwanted leather, I decided to finish this pointless activity and do something more exciting. For this I bought a piece of leather crazy Horse 25×20 cm in size and 1.6 mm. This piece cost me 2.5 plus shipping. Ordered the size without a specific purpose. For a regular purse 12h9 cm will be enough, for example, a piece of leather 30×25 cm. it will cost about 4 if you order it off. Buying a whole skin to save money. My first product was a primitive purse. Decomposed, took up the work On the cut out parts clearly visible uneven row of holes for the seam Having fixed the parts began to sew and the other side The whole process, from cutting to the last stitch took me no more than an hour and a half. This is what came out of it Of course primitive, but I hope it will not always be like this). Back to the question about the usefulness of all these tools. Naturally you should not take the opinion of a layman as a guide. But my subjective opinion I will lay out. I will go by method of elimination of the most useless to me elements. I think the bevel cutter will lie idle for a long time to come. Sandpaper strips seem to keep him company too. A planer. Perhaps rehabilitate and I will be able to appreciate its usefulness after I buy good blades. But so far nothing. Two seam markers with almost the same pitch, I think one would have been enough. What’s missing is a bigger step. A groove cutter, too. For the rest of the tools and materials (threads and wax). no questions yet. I’ll end here, I already have a couple of gift ideas for my loved ones. so we need to train further. Thank you all for your attention. П.С.

At the first stage of acquaintance not only with leather, but in general with any business, you should not buy up everything you see. what if your enthusiasm runs out or a few bought tools are superfluous. There are many companies making professional tools for tanneries, but the main advice is not in the choice of brand, but in the choice of material. Metal should be hardened, high-carbon steel is a must.
We have collected a list of the most popular. it is not small. And that is absolutely enough to get you started.
Cutting knife. A budget and at the same time popular variant. the construction knife. The main condition is a removable blade. There is no need to sharpen it, the blunt ends can be broken off and the work can be continued. Pay attention to the fixation of the blade, it must not wobble. If you use a shoemaker knife (shoemaker). Keep an eye on its sharpening.
Knife for rounding corners. Designed for chamfering edges. The larger the size, respectively, the larger the bevel itself.
Suture knife. Used for trimming the fringe (back side), thinning the skin during stitching.
Seamsticker. A roller tool with interchangeable tips. Used for even marking under the manual seam. To select the desired length of step (stitch): 3, 3.5, 4, 5 mm, you just need to change the wheel.
Sewing machine. Needed both for marking hand seams and decorative stitches.
Cutting punches. Most are similar to forks, with steel tines that allow you to cut holes in a thick layer. Variances for decorative stitching. like French seamstitch punches, which cut oblique lines.
Punching punches. Cut holes of different shapes and diameters. Mainly used for decorative trim or to insert different kinds of rivets, rings.
Trimmer (edger). Needed for cutting seam grooves in leather. For example, by chamfering the belt, the thread will lie in one plane when stitching (will not protrude).
Slicker. Used for the final processing of the edge, gives smoothness.
Cutting mat (mat). Multi-layered, dense, centimeter-marked material is self-leveling and allows you to cut gently and safely. Used by many handmade craftsmen.
Rotary knife. Professional tool for embossing different patterns. The upper part regulates the pressure force, thereby reducing or increasing the depth of cut.
Pony (clamp). Wooden vise used to hold leather in place during hand stitching.
Leather needles. Distinctive features of needles designed to work with leather are their reinforced rod and blunted end (or triangular point). Needle thickness should correspond to the thread number and density of the material. Soft leather is sewn with a sewing machine needles 0 and 90
Thread. It is better to use waxed. When choosing threads guided by the density of the material and the thickness of the needle: the thinner and longer, the smaller the number of thread.
Buying pre-made leather kits helps you minimize your expenses during the first phase, while gaining basic experience and seeing your first results.
Such kits include cut and punched parts, some complete with waxed threads and needles. It remains to connect the parts and you can use.
