STIHL chain saw does not start well in cold conditions

Why a chainsaw won’t start

Let’s consider each cause in more detail.

stihl, chain, does, start, cold, conditions

Fuel and air filter

Contamination of the main filter elements of the chainsaw, negatively affect its operation.

A dirty filter, for example, will not allow the full amount of air into the carburetor, affecting the quality of the fuel-air mixture and engine starting. A dirty fuel filter, will make it difficult or even impossible to get gasoline to the carburetor and make the engine run.

Reduced compression

One of the frequent causes of chainsaw malfunctions is the deterioration of the cylinder block (piston group).

As it is known, for normal start of a chainsaw in its engine there should be compression. It is necessary for normal compression of the fuel mixture in the engine cylinder, it also affects the work of the gasoline pump.

Falls in compression while cutting, causing your chainsaw to fail to start.

The reasons for the lack of compression, or its decrease, can be natural, t.к. Engine wear and tear in the course of operation. Also, problems can be caused by a serious failure, such as scoring of the cylinder block, or piston ring failure.

a sign of low compression, is a weak resistance of the starter when starting. At low compression, there is a decrease in the chainsaw power output, which negatively affects its performance. This problem can be solved by replacing piston rings or the entire cylinder/cylinder block.

Adjusting the carburetor

Improper carburetor adjustment will cause the chainsaw not to develop full power. Will not start well or will not start at all. Setting of the carburetor directly affects the quality of the fuel-air mixture, which is necessary for normal start and further engine operation.

If the carburetor is not properly adjusted, there will be more or less gasoline in the mixture of fuel and air than needed, and the mixture will not ignite even with normal spark formation.

An excess of gasoline in the mixture, is called overflow. A characteristic sign of overfilling is a wet spark plug, after several unsuccessful attempts to start the chainsaw.

Spark plug

The spark plug is one of the main components of the ignition system. A spark is formed on its electrodes, and in case of failure of this element, it will be difficult or even impossible to make a start.

The spark plug may fail completely or work intermittently or give a weak spark. Checking the spark plug is simple enough, this requires unscrewing it from the engine, connect it to the cap of the high-voltage wire and, putting it on the cylinder, pull the starter. If the spark plug is intact, it will have a strong, bluish spark. A weak spark with a reddish hue is a problem. The defective spark plug must be replaced.

Ignition coil

The cause of the fact that the new chainsaw does not start, or starts poorly, can be the ignition coil. Modern chain saws, are equipped with an electronic ignition coil. This part can not be repaired, and, as a rule, if there is a defect, it is replaced completely.

Gap between ignition coil and flywheel

A wrongly aligned gap between the flywheel and the ignition coil contacts affects the quality of the spark formation, which in turn is responsible for a normal start and stable engine operation.

Types of chainsaw malfunctions

Almost every hand-held gasoline-powered tool has a two-stroke engine as the power unit. These motors have advantages over four-stroke engines. They have less mass for the same power. But along with that, they have the disadvantages of adding oil to the gasoline and lower fuel economy. There are several major problems with the chainsaw:

  • The engine won’t start. Cold engine start and hot engine start are different. To start a cold motor, the suction pump is turned on, which reduces air intake and increases the percentage of gasoline in the fuel-air mixture.
  • The chainsaw starts and stops without having reached the necessary rpm. You have to constantly work the throttle trigger, keeping the rpm high.
  • The engine stalls under load, does not develop optimum power.

Malfunctions may be caused by mechanical reasons or by problems related to the electrical equipment.

What to do if the spark plug is primed on the chainsaw?

If you suspect the spark plug is wet, but the spark is still there, then it is sure to be plugged. It is unscrewed with a spark plug wrench and examined carefully. If the spark plug is wet, but it still has a spark, then it was definitely primed.

A lot of experienced owners are able to identify the current condition of the spark plug with a high degree of probability by its color. This procedure is recommended to be performed regularly.

  • Light brown fouling is exactly what all owners want to see. In this case the chainsaw does not malfunction.
  • Black soot signals an unbalanced mixture, namely a lack of oxygen in the fuel chamber. If the situation is not corrected, there is a high probability that the chainsaw spark plug will fill up again.
  • If you find corrosion on the plug or too much distance between the electrodes, then it is likely that a lean fuel mixture is being used.

Causes of malfunction and repair

Lack of spark

Spark problems are the most common in practice. They can be caused by the following factors:

All of the above problems lead in one way or another to fouling of the spark plug electrodes, which results in a corrosion process.

You can determine the lack of spark by the following sequence of actions:

  • first remove the lug of the high-voltage cable.
  • The next step is to unscrew the spark plug.
  • Screw the cap back on.
  • The plug is leaning against the cylinder with its skirt.
  • Start the engine with the starter motor.

If everything is okay, a spark will run between the electrodes. Otherwise it is necessary to clean everything and, if necessary, the electrode spacing should be changed with a feeler gauge. You can read the required distance in the manual. Depending on the manufacturer the distance varies from half a centimetre to a fifth of a centimetre.

The solution to the problem described above is not exhaustive, as there are other causes of chainsaw failure. Some of this can be solved temporarily, for one start of the tool, if you need to get the job done urgently. This is accomplished by performing the following steps:

  • Unscrew the plug using a wrench.
  • The candle is wiped with a clean rag.
  • Next, the spark plug needs to be dried. It takes about half an hour.
  • Use a file to remove the carbon deposits and adjust the gap between the electrodes.
  • Fuel is drained from the spark plug passage.
  • The channel is dried.
  • All parts are put back and an attempt is made to start the saw.

As mentioned above, these measures are temporary. Once you have finished working with the saw, it will stall again and the best solution in this situation is to take it to a professional to repair it.

Problems with the fuel supply

The first thing to do when you look to see if the fuel is working, is to make sure that it is in the tank. If the tank is full, you can check the priming. To do this, you disconnect the tube from the carburetor. You can now make a test. If there are no problems, the fuel will flow jerkily at the amounts specified by the manufacturer. No or very little fuel supply can be caused by a clogged channel that carries the fuel, or by a problem with the fuel filter.

In some cases startup problems can be caused by the tank being filled too much.

Another reason could be the quality of the fuel mixture. If you fill it up too much and then do not use the saw for a long time, the chemicals can start to work and then lead to problems with the tool.

Filter breakage

One of the filters may also be defective and cause a chain saw to start poorly. The fuel filter can be checked after performing the priming described above. After it turns out that the fuel does not go or goes too badly, it is necessary to free the tank from the mixture. Then you should take out the filter itself. If it is clogged it can be cleaned, but it would be better to replace it with a new one. If you often use your chainsaw in high-dust environments, it should be routine to clean the filter.

A clogged air filter will cause the saw to frequently stall or stop starting altogether

To clean it, it is necessary to remove the filter, but very carefully. Improper handling can lead to dust entering the saw’s vital parts

You might end up having to call in a professional to do the repair.

The above describes the most common problems that can occur with a chain saw. If the breakdown is minor, you can fix it yourself, but first of all you should study the instructions. Different saws have different requirements. Accordingly, the details of the repair may be different.

What to do

The power tool is being operated according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Only after checking the tension of the chain does the machine start. At the same time control the filling of the tanks with combustible mixture and oil, the unit is firmly fixed in the hands. If the machine still fails to operate when you follow the instructions, it is time to have the STIHL chain saw repaired.

How to start a STIHL chain saw correctly: Instruction

The tool manufacturer has taken all measures and developed a manual that makes the mechanism easy to start. The user will be safe from injury if he follows the suggested intervals:

  • The ignition is turned on and the engine crank is placed in the down position. The air inlet from the air filter is shut off by the carburettor choke. To start the chainsaw correctly the throttle valve must be open to enrich the fuel mixture.
  • Lever in throttle position. The starter is jerked several times until the first spark appears. If a spark is detected, the tool is ready to be started. Closed throttle damper allows high engine rpm. To bring it into idle, the throttle trigger is pushed in and immediately released. RPMs normalise rapidly.
  • STIHL MC units are not equipped as standard with any additional features to start the chain saw in a lighter version.

Idle speed adjustment

Before setting up, the tool is serviced. For the idle speed adjustment to be effective, a precaution is made:

To adjust the mechanism to idle speed, use the appropriate adjustment screw. Its rotation depends on the desired setting:

  • In the standard setting, turn the screw against the needle of the clock until it feels stiff. Then make two laps in the direction of the arrow.
  • If the saw is running at low rpm, turn the screw clockwise until the chain starts to run. Then make a half circle in the opposite direction.
  • At high frequency turn the regulator against the hand of the clock until the chain stops. Then continue turning for another half turn in the same direction.

It is not possible to adjust the idle speed if there is air leaking into the engine through the gasket, acceleration pump, oil seals, or for any other reason.

Setting the ignition

Gasoline engines are equipped with an ignition system which ignites the fuel. The timing of the flash affects the operation of the motor. In mass production in factory conditions, the adjustment of the ignition of the chainsaw is not done. Marks are aligned on the respective rotating elements. Incorrect adjustment leads to mechanism starting and stalling.

Check that the spark plug is dry and that the ignition circuit is functional before adjustment. The voltage cable to the spark plug is brought to the cylinder with a small gap and start the starter. If there is no flash, test the cable with a probe. Then check for faulty wiring to the disconnect button.

If the cables are undamaged, check the ignition coil. This is done with a special tester to test the device. In this case, the indicators on the device should coincide with the technical characteristics of the coil, which are prescribed in the instructions for use. If discrepancies are found, the ignition unit is replaced by a functioning device.

the coil may be damaged by vibration from dropping the tool or from impacts, so work with care.

Crankshaft bearings replacement

First measure the compression, if there is no compression, then the cause lies in the failure of the piston group.

The required cylinder pressure should be 8 atm, if it is lower, the cylinder and piston, rings, crankshaft bearings may have worn out.

To find out the condition of the piston system, you need to completely disassemble the saw and remove all the main components of the mechanism:

  • dismantle the headset, remove the cover on the tire;
  • remove the tire guide and tool chain with a wrench from the kit;
  • remove the air filter, remove the spark plug;
  • in place of the spark plug attach the piston stop to fix the crankshaft;
  • remove the clutch, then access to the clutch system is opened.

Rings with bearings are inspected, defects are detected. Replacement can be done on their own, which requires the skill to repair, or take the tool to a specialized workshop. Assembly is done in reverse order.

Now manufacturer STIHL is in a leading position among other companies that produce equipment designed for agricultural and construction. The products of this producer are famous not only for their highest level of quality, but additionally a good pricing policy and capacity of its models.

Who wouldn’t dream, it’s impossible to meet a person who doesn’t have a chain saw of this brand.This is one of the most recognized global companies. But the fact that out of 10 possible in 6 people exactly have them. All this is understandable, because STIHL chainsaws are the power along with the elegance of design. Unfortunately, however, these giants of technology fall apart from time to time and require some kind of repair. We’re going to focus on one of the brands, namely the STIHL ms 180 chain saw. Read about the STIHL ms 660 chain saw here. What’s needed, let’s get started.

What to do

Use the power tool according to the manufacturer’s instruction manual. Only after checking the chain tension is the machine started. At the same time, the filling of the tanks with combustible mixture and oil is monitored, the device is securely fixed in the hands. If the machine stops working after following all the rules, it is time to have the STIHL chain saw repaired.

How to start your STIHL chain saw: Instruction manual

The manufacturer of the tool has taken all measures and developed a manual, thanks to which the mechanism is convenient to start. The user is responsible for avoiding injury by following the suggested schedule:

  • The ignition is turned on and the engine crank is placed in the down position. The air inlet from the air filter is blocked by the carburetor flap. To start the chainsaw correctly the throttle valve must be open to make the mixture richer.
  • Lever in throttle position. The starter is jerked several times until the first spark is felt. If there is a flash, the tool is ready to start. Closed throttle valve causes high RPM. To return it to idle, the throttle trigger is pulled and immediately released. RPMs quickly return to normal.
  • There are no options on the STIHL MC model as standard to start the chain saw in a lighter version.

Idle speed adjustment

Perform service work on the machine before carrying out any adjustments. To get the no-load adjustment to be effective, preventive maintenance is carried out:

Proper adjustment screw is used to set the mechanism to idle speed. Its rotation depends on the desired setting:

  • In the standard setting turn the screw against the hand of the clock until it can be turned tightly. Then make two laps in the direction of the arrow.
  • If saw is working at low rpm, turn screw clockwise until chain starts to move. Then make half a circle in the opposite direction to.
  • At high frequency, turn the regulator against the hand of the clock until the chain stops. Then continue turning for another half turn in the same direction.

It is not possible to adjust the idle speed if there is air leaking into the engine through the gasket, acceleration pump, oil seals, or for any other reason.

Setting the ignition

Gasoline engines are equipped with an ignition system to ignite the fuel. The timing of the flashes affects the operation of the motor. No adjustment of chainsaw ignition is done in mass production at the factory. Marks are placed on the respective rotating elements, which are aligned during adjustment. Incorrect adjustment leads to the mechanism starting and stalling.

Check that the spark plugs are dry and that the ignition circuit is functional before adjustment. The voltage cable to the spark plug is brought to the cylinder with a small gap and start the starter. If there is no flash, test the cable with a probe. Then check the serviceability of the wire to the disconnect button.

If the cables are undamaged, check the ignition coil. This is done with a special tester to test the device. In this case the readings on the device should coincide with the technical characteristics of the coil, which are prescribed in the instruction manual. If discrepancies are found, the ignition unit is replaced with a functioning device.

The spool can fail from vibration if the tool is dropped or bumped, so work with care.

Crankshaft bearing replacement

First measure the compression, if there is no compression, then the cause lies in the failure of the piston group.

Required pressure in the cylinder should be 8 atm, if it is lower, it is possible that the cylinder and piston, rings, crankshaft bearings.

To find out the state of the piston system, you need to completely disassemble the saw and remove all the main nodes of the mechanism:

  • To remove the headset, remove the cover on the tire;
  • remove the guide bar and the tool chain with a wrench from the kit;
  • remove the air filter, remove the spark plug;
  • replace the spark plug with a piston retainer to hold the crankshaft in place;
  • remove the clutch, then access the clutch system.

Rings with bearings are inspected, identify defects. You can replace it yourself, which will require repair skills, or take the tool to a specialized repair shop. Assembly is done in reverse order.

What to do if the spark plug is leaking on the chainsaw

If you suspect the plug is primed, you need to inspect it. Using a spark plug wrench, it is unscrewed and carefully inspected. If the spark plug is wet, but there is a spark, then it is definitely flooded.

Many experienced owners are able to determine with a high degree of probability the current condition of the spark plug by its color. This procedure is recommended to be done regularly.

  • Light brown carbon deposits. Exactly what all owners want to see. In this case, the performance of the chainsaw is not impaired.
  • Soot deposits indicate an unbalanced mixture, namely a lack of oxygen in the fuel chamber. If the situation does not improve, there is a high probability that the chainsaw plug will fill up again.
  • If corrosion is found on the spark plug, or the distance between the electrodes is too great, it is likely that a poor mixture is being used.

Winding device

As on other saws, the carburetor is the main starter. Taking a closer look at the carburetor that the chainsaw is equipped with STIHL

180, it should be noted that it has a single adjustment screw. In other words, it is a sort of no-load adjustment screw. In this case, the full-load nozzle remains stationary at all times.

In other words, it is not subject to regulation. In turn, there is no way to affect the full load. It is also important to pay attention to the factory settings that allow the fuel-air mixture to be fed directly to the engine. And this principle remains the same regardless of the operating conditions of the tool.

Chain saw chain problems

In addition to engine problems, your chain saw may have cutting (sawing) unit malfunctions that include an oil pump, bar and saw chain.

No oil flows to the tire

Usually, if there is no oil flow to the chainsaw chain, you need to perform a check of the channels through which the oil flow to the bar, and clean them from contamination. If the previous steps did not find the cause of the problem, you will have to check the oil pump. To do this, you need to:

  • Remove part of the chainsaw cover;
  • remove the clutch;
  • Loosen the 3 screws and remove the cover concealing the pump;
  • Get to the worm gear, which rotates the pump shaft.

If the threads on it are worn, the shaft does not rotate, the pump does not work, the chain is not lubricated. The worn pinion must be replaced. You can also pull out the oil pump itself and manually try to pump oil through it. If it is not pumping, the pump should be replaced.

Also the lack of lubrication can be due to its leakage. Check if the tubes coming from the oil pump are hermetically connected. If the tightness is compromised, the tubes are replaced with new ones.

Chain breakage

If the chain breaks while the chain saw is in operation, it could be because the chain hit a hard object like a nail. If, on the other hand, the chain breaks repeatedly, it may be due to.

  • Poor quality of the metal from which the saw chain is made. It is necessary to buy chainsaws from well-known brands.
  • Chain overheating because of poor lubrication. The result is that the saw overheats, the properties of the metal change, and the chain breaks under load. The chainsaw’s entire lubrication system needs to be checked (discussed above).

You can also learn more about the causes of chain breaks in this video.

Chain does not turn

This unpleasantness often haunts inexperienced chain saw owners. They forget to take off the brake after starting the engine. As a result, the chain does not rotate, the brake system overheats and the clutch mechanism fails. The problem can be solved by taking the brake off. If the clutch is not “burned out,” you will notice the chain turning. If this is not the case, the clutch will have to be replaced.

The chain gets blunt quickly

Most of the reason why the chain dulls quickly is due to poor quality of the saw. Trying to save money on brand name chains, chain saw owners either buy chainsaw from unknown suppliers or inexperiencedly buy fakes of well-known brands. The best place to buy a chain saw is at a legitimate thrift store. STIHL saw chains are very popular with owners of these machines.

The chain will not stop

If you notice while working with a STIHL chain saw that the chain does not stop when you need it to, this problem can occur in two different ways.

  • The brake band is dirty. When the chain saw is in operation, dirt, sawdust, dust, etc., can get under the chain.д. The result is that the brakes are locked and the chain does not stop when the throttle is released. Clean the node to eliminate the problem.
  • The brake band is worn out. You need to replace this part of the braking system.

Chain is stuck

It happens when either the drive sprocket or the idler sprocket is worn. The chain usually seizes under load. But the chain saw can still turn without any load. The photo below shows a worn chainsaw drive sprocket.

In the photo below you can see that the cause of the chain jamming is in the chain sprocket location.

But what to do if the chain saw is completely stuck and all the attempts to pull the starter motor have no result?? This problem sometimes occurs with chainsaws made in China. It is caused by the bolts that are screwed to the plastic cover of the engine, which are loose from vibration. These bolts are located right under the flywheel. The arrows on the photo below show the location of the problem bolts.

As they unscrew, they rub against the flywheel and can totally jam the chain saw. The following picture shows the handwheel with existing bolt wear.

To fix it, you’ll need to remove the handwheel from the engine shaft and tighten the screws.

Your chain saw doesn’t cut right

This problem is most likely to occur if the chain is blunt or not properly sharpened. This is mostly true for new chain saws. But if the bar is worn out, even after changing the chain you will notice that the saw swings to the side. If you place the bar on a flat table and hold a straight edge against the bar as shown in the photo below, it is easy to see how the bar is worn.

If this is the case, you’ll notice that there’s a gap of about 2 mm between the guide bar and the angle bar. This one-sided bar wear is the reason why the chain saw cuts crookedly. The problem can only be solved by changing the guide bar for a new one.
