Stretched chain on chainsaw what to do
How to check the correct tension?
Figure 1. How to check chain tension
To check the quality of the tensioning, you should gently pull it away from the middle of the tire.
Maximum permissible degree of saw-tail exit is 2/3 of the length of the saw-tail.
The following signs may also indicate the need for tightening:
- creaking and rattling in the area of the main drive sprocket;
- Loose tightening of the safety mechanism, tire fasteners;
- The chain jams when sawing, the vibrations and noise increase.
Chainsaw has reduced productivity and operating time. Even when cutting soft types of wood, the chain can get caught in the groove, the rpm is low and cutting is smooth.
LOOSE CHAINSAW CHAIN SOLUTION EP.15
Reasons for chain failure
High chain stretching speed is observed during the running-in phase. It is during this period that the cutting element lapping onto the bar and drive sprocket of the chain saw is observed. During the running-in period, it is very important to regularly check the tension of the product, otherwise it may come off during the operation of the tool.
Some of the main reasons why a chain fails include:
- Poor quality of the product. Some Chinese manufacturers, in order to increase the demand for their products, resort to making cheaper products by manufacturing them from low quality materials.
- Improper lubrication function. If there is little or no lubricant supplied to the chain and bar, excessive overheating of the product causes the metal to expand and lose its properties.
- Inadequate lubricant quality. Application of used material causes the chain to quickly wear out and stretch, which is caused by metal substances in the used material.
- Poor quality of tooth sharpening. Using a cutting tool with blunted teeth not only lowers tool productivity but also causes the chain to stretch more quickly.
Professionals also put forward their opinion that the longevity of replacement elements is affected by the nature of the chainsaw‘s use. The negative consequences of improper chain adjustment also affect the accelerated stretching of the cutting element and its failure. If the product is severely overtightened, performance will be reduced because the motor will experience excessive stress during operation. In addition, the chain will fit tightly on the bar, accelerating the wear on the bar as well. If the product is loose, it could come off the bar or break at any time. To make your chainsaw run smoothly and easily, you should check the tensioning of the cutter and the sharpening of the teeth each time you refuel.
How to put the chain on the saw?
To make it easier to put a chain on the saw, it is necessary to use the setting wheel. Next, dress according to the plan:
- The surface on which you place the saw must be level;
- Remove the sprocket guard from the chainsaw;
- Turn the sprocket to the right as far as it will go;
- Push the chain onto the clamping piece. Be sure to observe safety precautions so as not to injure yourself while doing so;
- Slide both elements onto the sprocket;
- Reattach the cover;
- Check that guides are in proper places;
- Check the condition of the chain.
Tools you will need for shortening
Correctly shorten the chain of a chainsaw with your own hands is possible with the use of special devices.
Machine for removing rivets
For disassembly a specialized machine is used. the punching machine. The machine is designed as a small mechanical press. In its lower part there is a removable anvil with different sized grooves. The working rod of the device also has nozzles of different diameters. This makes it possible to use the machine for chains of different manufacturers. Remove the rivet by squeezing it out of its seat.
Note: the diameter of the removable tip of the working rod should not exceed the diameter of the hole in the side plates.
Chainsaws & Tools : How to Shorten the Chain on a Chainsaw
Rivet setting machine
After dismantling and removing the chain element, the operating links must be joined together again. A riveting machine is used for this purpose. The assembly process is carried out with a special work roll that is driven by an electric motor.
Electric riveting and shaping machine
The rivet is clamped between the stationary anvil and the work roll. The operator sets the pressure of the work roll by himself with the help of the adjusting screw. The riveting edge is gradually crushed as the roller rotates, making it impossible to detach the links from each other.
Note: the use of machines to shorten the chain of a chainsaw makes the quality of the assembly as close as possible to the factory specimen. However, these devices have a rather high cost, and their purchase for home use is unprofitable. Besides it is not always possible to use specialized tools directly at the workplace. That is why it can be shortened with improvised tools.
How to untangle a chainsaw chain
If you remove the old chain or put a new chain on the chain saw guide bar, it can get tangled. It can also happen during careless transport. When the chain gets tangled, it curls up into rings.
Because of its inadequate flexibility in the transverse direction, it is very difficult to untangle it with bare hands because if you try to untangle one ring, a new ring will form in the other place.
Put the chain on a horizontal surface and untwist the chain in both directions, pulling the chain in such a direction that the diameter of the chainring increases. Sooner or later the chain will unravel to its natural position.
There is another way. you can rivet one chain link and straighten it out, then put it back together in a ring and rivet the riveted links back together.
How to tension the chain on a chainsaw. Tightening Tips. Chains on a chainsaw
Owners of chainsaws occasionally run into a common problem. the chainsaw or electric saw chain starts to come off. Why this happens, we’ll examine later in this review.
There are only three main reasons why a chain comes off:
Let’s look at why this or that problem occurs:
If the chain is stretched, starts to sag, slips off the bar
The cause is most likely wear and tear of the component itself. The chain has a finite lifespan and is the most rapidly wearing working element of a chainsaw or electric saw. The metal is deformed because of the loads, so it not only gets blunt, but it also becomes about 1 cm. Longer than on a new tool. The easiest way is to change the part, i.e. to buy and install a new chain.
On how the tightening is done and if it is even possible to tighten the chain at home, in the review.
If there is a problem with the guide bar, it is where it is mounted.
This cause is quite common: in the groove located between the outer plate mounted on the chainsaw headset and the inner plate located on the body of the chainsaw or electric saw. The cover is usually bolted in place. This mount is called the motor unit. The bar mount, like the drive sprocket, is covered with protective covers. When the mount bolts come loose, the tire vibrates more and begins to move.
If the bar is okay, tensioning is good and so is the chain itself. If it is the bar that is causing the chain to become loose, reattach the bar and check your chain saw.
Trouble with the sprocket.
If the drive sprocket is not properly secured, the chainsaw chain will also need tensioning, because sagging is unavoidable. Secure the sprocket bar by removing the engine guard, spark plugs and pulling out the air filter. A stopper is installed in place of the spark plug, whose main task is to fix the piston. Then you can use a special wrench or a universal wrench for angle grinder to rotate the clutch disc in the clockwise direction.
Make sure that the piston is in its outermost position. if you look in the hole for screwing in the candle, the piston should be at the bottom.
After the piston has been fixed, the drive sprocket can be clamped. Then all the elements are assembled in reverse order.
Using a special tool
Experienced craftsmen recommend the use of profiled shortening equipment. This allows you to do a quality job, avoiding breakage in the subsequent operation of the tool.
This is a mechanical device, similar to a normal press. Include an anvil, slots to secure the saw headset with different tooth pitch. For convenience, there are interchangeable tips for squeezing rivets. The tool is only intended for separating the links.
Riveting and splicing machine
Used together with a riveting punch for riveting and rolling saw chain with different pitch. Cutting depths of the headsets can vary between 1.1 and 2 mm. Includes rotating inserts, anvils marked A or B (difference in pitch).
Operating mechanism. saw chain with a new link and fresh rivets are attached to the guide rails. Then the area is pressed against the built-in anvil by the roller, the motor is started. As it rotates, it presses and crushes the rivet. The adjusting screw must be turned slowly during the process. The advantage of the riveting-punching machine is that the quality and strength of the rivets is the same as in the factory, they can withstand higher loads.
Important! It is not practical to purchase machines for the home workshop. They are expensive and are only aimed at working on the chainsaw headset.
Breakdowns of the chainsaw chain lubrication system
There are several common chain lubrication system failures. These include:
Before we look at why the chain is not lubricated on the chainsaw, we must carefully inspect and carefully flush the bar oil passages. It is quite possible that they are clogged and that the chain is not getting enough oil.
Often the problem with oil leakage lies in the chainsaw oil pump. If it is faulty, you should not immediately replace the entire assembly. Often it is sufficient to replace the plunger. In other cases, adjusting the oil pump can help.
Why the chain saw cuts crooked. causes and repair
If the chainsaw bar with the chain moves to the side when operating the chainsaw, this is one of several common faults:
- The teeth of the chain are not sharpened evenly;
- The chain used does not match the parameters of the bar;
- The chainsaw’s saw headset is subject to a lot of wear and tear.
In any of these cases, the first thing to do is to replace the chain. To do this you need to choose a part that matches the parameters given in the instruction manual or use our chain sizing table. If the chainsaw is still sawing sideways even after that, you need to inspect the bar of the tool. It may have shifted during an accidental bump, and you will need to install the part as shown in the pictures in the owner’s manual to repair it.
What to do to keep saw chains from stretching fast?
There are many causes of chain stretch. It is very common that this happens during the running-in phase or after new chain saw parts have been installed. The cutting edge is lapping against the guide bar and sprocket during this period. If you do not pay attention to checking tensioning at this stage, the chain can come off.
First of all, the chain element can fail due to insufficient oil supply. Lack of material for lubrication causes overheating of the product and expansion of metal links. Among the negative factors are also contamination and dustiness of the working area.
