Tool for cleaning joints between tiles

The old tile with the new joints

After the old grout is removed a new grout is applied. Try now to avoid the typical mistakes that made it necessary to update the grout.

  • It is desirable to avoid white (light) grout, especially in difficult areas (bath, kitchen, corridor).
  • The most reliable mash seams epoxy grout, but it is expensive.
  • It is cheaper to grout tiles with ordinary cement-based grout. Then impregnate the seams with a special compound that strengthens them and protects them from fungus and bacteria.
  • Do not allow water to collect on the joints for a long time and, if possible, clean the joints of the tiles regularly with special cleaners.

Tools for grouting.

Sequence of work, when filling the joints on the tiles, considered in the article. It remains to break down in detail what tools are needed for this.

Tools for stirring grout.

The easiest option is to mix the grout in buckets in which the grout mixture is sold with hydrophobic properties. It is sold in paper bags.

Stirring can be done by hand, with a trowel. The spatula should be long and rectangular. With this shape of tool, it is easier to stir and get from the bottom. A narrow metal trowel is less productive.

Stirring the grout by hand, with a trowel.

Often videos show stirring grout with a drill or electric screwdriver.

Probably at low speed. But this is another additional tool. Which should be washed, stored, bought, transported. The time gain is small. Except when grouting tiles on the floor in the supermarket.

Another important tool needed at this stage is a brush to rinse the trowel and bucket.

If you leave it without rinsing (there are many such advisors) and just, then, tap it to crumble, then everything will not come off. New grout (and a different color) will have bits of old dry grout from the bucket.

Tools for applying grout between joints.

Trowels for grouting joints were considered separately. The best was a trowel for grouting epoxy grout Litokol. It’s a great way to squeeze the grout out. It is convenient to work in the corners, thanks to the sharp edges. This is the opinion of most of those who have tried it in work. Those who have not done so still grout with a narrow piece of rubber.

Tools for washing grout out and cleaning tiles.

For this stage of the work, you need to have two tools:

A trowel to remove the grout from the tiles and a piece of soft foam rubber. The beauty of the grout depends on these tools.

Professional trowel made of high quality plastic and porous cellulose. Still such a tool may be called a plasterer with a rubber coating.

There are a lot of counterparts. You can’t call them anything else. The problem with the designers of such devices is that they do not grind the tiles and do not understand the main property of this tool. Outwardly copying, they want the product to be a success.

The main difference between these trowels (in photo 1-3) soft foam rubber in the base. Often with small pores. It does not collect chilled grout well and quickly clogs with the mixture.

Also, the foam is quickly erased, but often it does not come to this, because it falls off the handle. If you buy such a tool then the entire technology is perceived as nonsense.

With a piece of foam rubber, not everything is simple. If you take the first encountered one, it will last for 2-3 working days. It quickly crumples and turns into a rag. To wash out the grout on the tiles, you have to press harder with this foamer. This results in depressions in the seam.

I felt the difference by accident, buying a piece of pink foam rubber at the bazaar. It is more expensive.

The trick is in the density and stiffness of this material.

Foam is made for a variety of needs. The cheapest packing or soundproofing. This is the kind most often used for blurring. It clumps quickly and does not absorb water.

It is necessary to use furniture foam in pink. It has a higher density and stiffness. It does not crumple after repeated squeezing. This material lasts a year without losing quality.

The thickness also varies. 20 mm to 100 mm.

The optimum is 40 mm. If it is thicker, it needs to be rinsed more often and more thoroughly. The grout stays in the middle of the thick piece and hardens. At a lower thickness poorly collects water.

There is a denser blue foam in the furniture industry. No experience with it.

Here is some information about the classification of foam for furniture. There is a detailed explanation of why the packaging material loses elasticity:

If you choose the right tools and use them correctly, then there is no need for a round trowel for shaping the seam. The latter has the disadvantage of smearing grits of paint on the seam (some grouts).

Tools for cleaning plaque off tile.

This is the last step in grout work. It is necessary to remove from the tiled surface a white scum, which appears after the drying of cement grout.

You can use a simple dry rag. Works. But if you imagine the evolution of this tool in me, it would be this chain.

Work gloves sackcloth piece of towel felt glove.

The last option has proven to be the most effective. Such gloves are used for welding work. Sometimes they are called welder’s mitts. The lint removes plaque well and will never scratch the tile. One glove is enough for a long time.

You can also use a stiffer version. Sanding sheets Brait Scotch tape for hand sanding. This material has many variants of implementation. It is necessary to use products that do not contain abrasive material.

They are good to remove cured grout in the pits and deep patterns on the tiles.

Carry out cleaning of the grout after the joint is completely dry.

In such a condition, as in the photo, to wipe off the plaque early. The seams are damp. By removing the plaque, you’re smearing grout all over the tile again. You can, once again, rinse with clean water and foam. The next day there will be less plaque and it will be easier to remove. The more you dilute the cement grout with water, the weaker it is.

Tools for epoxy grout.

All of the above tools can be used to apply epoxy grout.

Only, in this case, some become disposable. The pores on the trowel for grouting and foam are clogged by the drying epoxy mixture. They lose their performance characteristics. For large volumes, one set is not enough. Have to be replaced.

A tiler’s bucket is necessary for grouting work ?

This tool appeared on the Russian Internet market recently. It was spotted on Western YouTube about five years ago.

The main advantage of the bucket for grouting tiles (his know-how) rollers to clean the porous material on the grater from the grout mixture.

This innovation allows you to not get your hands wet and work without rubber gloves. Prevents cement from corroding the skin. There is nothing else useful in that set. There are drawbacks:

  • The first drawback is the trowel that comes in the kit. It has a soft foam cover. This is one of the first three options in the photo above.
  • The second inconvenience is the bucket itself. As a container, it is convenient and roomy. But this is another container to move, store, buy. The most balanced review of the grout bucket is here:

It’s not for nothing that attempts are popping up to combine the idea of cleaning with rollers with the tile work receptacles that already exist:

The tools for grouting large areas.

A set of such a tool is in the video below:

There is a slightly thicker mixture than usual. Due to this and repeated, repetitive movements on the tiles, filling the seams is achieved. Also there grout is soft long cure and easily washed off with a foam rubber sponge.

The second interesting experience of using a butterfly mop, with a mechanical squeegee when grouting large areas of tile on the floor. Its advantage is that the foam nozzle is covered with a fluffy microfiber, which makes the mop absorbent water, but with a hard surface. A flat surface doesn’t wash grout out of joints. Even fast-curing mixes can be cleaned with this mop.

Sometimes the grout does not match the color or is not professionally applied. In such cases, there is a desire to change it. The way to remove old grout from joints depends on the type of grout applied.

If the grout is CG2 class, with increased resistance to abrasion, it can only be removed mechanically:

With an angle grinder or a DREMEL mini drill. The latter is more convenient.

When working with an angle grinder, you must use a cutting wheel to go through the center of the seam, without touching the side edges of the tiles. The remains around the edges, easily then removed with a knife, with interchangeable blades.

Cerezite grout, Sopro, soft. They can be cut with a knife, or a special scraper.

If you can only scratch the joint with a knife, it’s probably Mapey grout or a similar class of. The downside of a squeegee :
