How to make a tool for woodcarving. Making knives (cutters)
Continuation “Tools for woodcarving. Metal Search.” And so, I’ve compiled everything I could find. Dangerous razors came safely, I found the file at the market, and I already had the blade. While I decided to make myself a few wood cutters of different sizes and angles. But here will be only knives, cutters simple shape. I can’t make semicircular and other complicated shapes, so I’ll have to look for them on sale.
Wood carving knife from emery board.
First and easiest I decided to make a knife (chisel) for small wood works from a nail file. After sharpening the file a little, at the right angle, I got a very sharp chisel. I sharpened them by hand.
It cuts beautifully. Only, I have something it is very fragile, and the nose of the knife has broken already two times
Metal blade wood carving knife for machine tools.
The most time consuming part was making the knife out of the blade. It takes a lot of time to work the metal. It’s a very strong metal and it’s strong.
I sawed the blade with an angle grinder. Of course, I burned the edges of the metal and had to sand it down.
My blade was thick and I made it a little thinner (for a small cutter).
A big power knife. Now I’m thinking of doing the Bogorodsky.
Razor blade for woodcarving.
Hazardous razor metal is very strong, but brittle. It’s not that hard to make a razor knife. The metal has already been given the shape of the knife, it only needs a little tweaking.
I have not described the process of making the cutter in detail (in the next post there will be a detailed description of making a cutter with a handle). I think it’s pretty clear.
Here are some cutters made for woodcarving. Now I will look at what forms are more acceptable. Sharpening angles didn’t especially choose and didn’t wrap, I will look for the optimal one in the process. If you burn the metal (it turns purple), it’s no good for a carver. It will become soft. You have to grind it down completely. I came to the conclusion, that it’s better to sharpen knife by hand, than to try to sharpen it faster on emery board (with high revolutions) and burn it to the ground. I had another metal. Two edged saw, they say is used in meat packing plants for sawing bones, but it is very soft and when sharpened turns into a foil.
If you have any questions, remarks, suggestions, additions, I would be very grateful if you tell me in Комментарии и мнения владельцев.
Purpose The flag knife is a special cutter for geometric threading. It is used to create long straight cuts and triangular incisions, including large ones. Sometimes such a knife is used in contour carving, but much less often.
Features of the blade The knife has a characteristic triangular blade with a beveled cutting part. This geometry allows you to greatly increase the length of the sharp edge, which is very useful for creating long slots and large geometric recesses.
Sharpening A standard geometric thread sharpening scheme is used for flags. As a rule, it is one-sided. from 20° to 40°, depending on the hardness of the wood you have to work with.
Some carvers not only sharpen the main edge, but also the sides (one or two). you get a multifunctional cutter, with two or three cutting sides. It expands its capabilities in geometric carving, for example, by allowing fine trimming. At the same time work with such double-edged knife requires caution and good technique.
Special features of the technique
Wood carving is an extremely interesting and time-consuming decorative technique, which has been used for a very, very long time. The process starts with the creation of a blank or block (billet). Then the element is roughed, in which defects are removed and the surface is smoothed. After that comes the turn of artistic work, for which the cutters are used.
Technically speaking, this process is the sampling of a certain part of the wood, which gives volume and relief to the workpiece. This stage is considered basic, because the final look of the future product will depend on it. The final processing of the object involves sanding, impregnation with paint and antiseptic preparations.
For this purpose, cutters with different parameters of the blade are used. Their quality, as well as the skill of the performer, determines the cleanliness and attractiveness of the ornament on the wooden surface. For this reason, care must be taken to ensure that the blade used has no defects and is sharp and strong. If experienced professionals are able to literally blindly determine the level of quality and type of knives, then for beginners the selection of cutters can cause some problems. Beginners carpenters should learn information about their varieties and peculiarities of operation.
How to make cutters on wood with their own hands
One of the most pressing topics for any carver.Where to get good wood tools? Quality well-sharpened wood carving knives can bail out even the not quite experienced craftsman. The cuts are smooth, clean, and it’s much easier to work with such a tool! After trying different source materials for woodworking tools, from scalpels to razors, I stopped at metal cutters.
They are quite fragile and strong at the same time. Carbon steel allows you to keep the edge of the blade sharp for a long time, it is not blunted even on hard wood species. So, first of all, we cut the cutter on the metal cutter according to a pre-drawn drawing of the future cutter.
In our case it is a small knife-cutter, which is the main tool of the carver.
The presence of such an abundance of sparks when cutting indicates that the steel is good, carbon steel, which means it is suitable for woodcarving.
Preferably, the part that will be in the handle is larger than the blade. It’s for strength. We grind the blade of the knife, always dipping it into cold water, so it doesn’t overheat.
Now you need to make a handle for the blade. For this purpose, we take slats of a strong specie of wood. In one part we draw the outline of the knife, the other as an overlay.
Cut a notch in the wood in the shape of the knife, so that it sinks flush, smear Pva glue on both parts.
We glue the knife in a vice. It takes about 12 hours. 24 hours to glue it together.
After gluing, we grind the handle, and the knife is made sharp on the grinder. According to this principle, you can make a knife with your own hands. By the way, excellent wood chisels are made of metal drills.
You can make a jamb from a rapeseed saw.

How to make a wood carving with your own hands
House wood carving with their own hands occupied an honorable place in Russian folk art. In the Russian countryside there are many houses, whose facades, windows and walls are decorated with beautiful patterns and ornaments. Now this type of craft is becoming popular. How to learn the art of woodcarving with their own hands?
How to learn how to carve wood?
Wood carving is a decorative applied art, which is on a par with artistic processing, lathe work and even sawing. Before you begin to learn how to carve wood, you must learn a few very important rules: you must have a tool of excellent quality (lightweight, handy, good steel); the knife and chisels must be sharpened; you must cut with the knife only from yourself; you must always carry a first aid kit; every tool must have a permanent place. The best materials for beginners are: basswood, alder, aspen, which are easy to cut, leaving an even, smooth cut.

A standard set of flat and round chisels can include 18 different shapes of cutting edge, which are made on blades that have five different profiles each, and most of them range in size from 2 to 50mm. These are available from good tool stores or from specialty mail order companies, some of which have global supply chains. Carving tools are sold with a sharpened but not directional edge. Unlike basic woodworking tools, chisels and other carving tools are sharpened on both sides of the cutting edge to provide the greatest variety of wood cutting angle. Flat chisels have the same edge angle on each side, round chisels and cutting tools have a greater bevel on the outside than on the inside. To keep the edge of these tools sharp you need a good-quality sharpening stone and shaped gritters. Only a few basic tools are necessary for the beginning craftsman.

What tools are needed for woodcarving?
There seems to be no unified classification of woodcarving tools. In various books, a variety of tools are called cutters, joints, cleavers, dies and scrapers. And then there are all kinds of pearls of fine verbiage, such as “half-circle chisels” or “chisel angles”, not to mention quite vulgar. “steep joints”.
I cannot vouch for the fact that the following classification is correct and the only correct one forever and ever, amen. And certainly not the most complete. I will write only about those tools which I know how to use myself, and for which I can vouch. In the following, describing in detail the different methods of carving, we will consider each tool separately: where to get it, how to make it, how to use it, and. т. д.
Every knife, whether it’s a carving knife or a kitchen carving knife, has a spout, shank, heel, shank and handle. It is easy to distinguish knives from other tools by these attributes.
Cutters. Cutters, in conversation, often call them simply knives. They come in many shapes and sizes, but all have a cutting angle of exactly thirty-five degrees. Cutters are the most important tool among knives, and probably among all other tools. Every cutter has his favorite cutter. They are the ones that do the basic and most delicate work. Shoals.
Shoals. These are knives that are used in flat-textured carving to cut long straight lines, for scoring the contour and for processing the side walls of slots. The main feature of joints is the cutting angle of sixty degrees. Auxiliary knives.
Auxiliary knives. I do not know the name of these knives, which does not prevent their use for many years. In books, they are sometimes called cutters and sometimes joints. I don’t want to invent, as some people do, another masterpiece of wordsmithing. Number one is used for finishing curved surfaces in volumetric carving, and number two is indispensable in carving of slotted. Chisels.
1.Straight: / Straight chisels (flat chisels). They are easy and simple to recognize. And they are straight chisels for cleaning and smoothing flat surfaces in a thread on the plane.
They come in sizes both very large and very small. In addition, each semi-circular chisel has a height and radius of curvature. If the height is greater than the bend radius, the chisel is called a steep chisel, if much greater, then a scrape chisel, if much less, then a sloping chisel, and if equal, then a medium chisel. The main use of half-circular chisels is in volumetric classic carving. They are also used in flat-head carving.
Rivets. / Pincushions come in different sizes, but they have only three sharpening forms: leaf, sword and nail.
The first two are called as such: the leaf chisel and the sword chisel. They are used in flat-scalloped and volumetric carving to deburr the background in hard-to-reach places.
Needles Needles. The nail knives differ from the usual clinchers in the shape of the sharpening. They have the shape of a fingernail, which is why they got their name. And here is the purpose of nail clippers. scraping in hard to reach places. Without the nails, in many cases, a nice clean carving is not possible.
Cranberries (cranberries). / This is the name of a group of tools that have two bends of one hundred and twenty degrees. This, as you may have guessed, is done in order not to touch the work surface when carving. According to their purpose, there are many kinds of picks. There is a huckleberry half-circle chisel, huckleberry nail, etc. т. д.
Heismus (Eismus, heismus): ъ. / Heismuses. They are often called corners, but this is not correct. A Heismus is a Heismus. The best bend angle is forty-five degrees.
Pliers. / Daggers always have a bending angle of fifteen degrees. Their handles are most often in the form of a mushroom. All of these features are true only for wood carving tools. Driving files for carving bone or metal, for example, look very different. They are used for different purposes and in different types of carving.
Spoonmakers. Spoon knives. The best spoon carver is a sharpened ring with a bar welded to it. There are other designs as well, but they are all less convenient to work with. Spoons are needed to remove a large volume of material in depressions and for processing the inner walls in the manufacture of dishes. They are also used in flat-relief carving.
Also, all of our threads without exception use regular drills inserted into the handles. Agree that it is not always convenient to drill a hole in a piece that is already halfway done. You can’t squeeze it in a vise, and it’s not accurate enough.
A long time ago, back when I was a kid, a book by a group of authors was published. A. А. Abrosimova, N. И. Kaplan, T. Б. Mitlansky. The book was called “Artistic Woodcarving, Bone and Horn Carving”. That’s where this drawing was first published, which has been traveling from book to book ever since. The knife shown in the picture, I foolishly made once. I copied everything one-to-one, keeping all the proportions exactly. It’s very difficult to cut with such a knife. Practically impossible. If you sharpen it not on the side that is indicated, but on the opposite side, and turn the handle inside out, then you still get something.
The chisels aren’t all that clear either. What’s a half palm handle?? Besides, judging from the drawing, they’re all bent. Such chisels, indeed, can be used for sculptural carving, but, better, as an auxiliary tool. Otherwise, the process of creating a sculpture might take an infinite amount of time. For a complete wood carving, you absolutely need a set of sharp chisels. In addition, chisels and a knife, of course, can be used alone, but it is not desirable. There are many other tools that can and should be used in volumetric carving.
Good cranberries (or cranberries, whichever way you like), have two bends of exactly one hundred and twenty degrees, no more, no less. In stores, more often you can find tools with bends of ninety degrees, or with different angles of bends. Never get them, unless you’re a masochist. Tired! The blade will constantly plunge deep into the wood, and leave jagged grooves instead of picking out the background quietly and peacefully.
Also, you can find cranberries with correct bends, but with such a short bridge that the distance between the base and the cutting part is less than the radius of the handle. Buying clavichords, remember that the purpose of their existence on this planet is to be able to work flat, without slapping the handle on the wood.
How to choose a tool and where to buy it
Beginners in woodcarving, as a rule, don’t understand how to choose and where to buy suitable tools. In fact, nowadays there is a huge range of different devices for carpentry work.
When choosing tools, you need to pay attention to such nuances as:
- The complexity of the work. If it is not very high, it will be enough to buy a few individual tools. In turn, tools for woodcarving for beginners are often sold in appropriate sets. Some experts do not advise to buy them without proper practice.
- Steel grade. It is necessary to choose tools of higher quality and reliability. This affects the duration of their operation and ease of use.
- The manufacturer’s firm. It is best to give your preference to well-known brands or trusted companies.
- The country of manufacture. In most cases, Chinese tools are not of high quality. Experienced craftsmen advise buying domestic or European wood carving tools.
Not only the comfort of carving, but also the final result of the work depends on the right choice of tools.
Types of carving
Woodcarving belongs to the plastic art. There are relief and three-dimensional sculptural carving. Beginning carvers must first master the techniques of carving. In this technique, variations are possible:
- blind carving with a matching background
- Slotted contour carving
However, this is not the whole list. The classifications often differ due to the fact that our state is quite large. In different regions, the names of the same technique may be different. But the essence of the work remains the same. All young masters start with geometric carving. It is characterized by lightness and beauty.
