How to make with your own hands?

After making calculations and adjusting the dimensions of all the elements, you can begin the independent installation of the band saw. The main element of the carpentry type machine is the working table, where the processing of wood, metal, stone or synthetic. Such a design includes a circular motion of the element responsible for cutting, which affects the workpiece. Clamping is performed by a pair of pulleys. It should be said that the entire structure takes up a lot of space, so when creating drawings you should take into account the size of the room.

The frame of the frame is a supporting part, which holds the entire mechanism of the device in question. It is made only of metal profiles, which need to be welded due to the fact that because of the vibration during operation, the load is significantly increased. If the machines are small in size, and there are no metal profiles, then analogues made of wood will do. But it must be a solid board with a width of 2-3 centimeters, and not plywood sheets or material such as particle board.

Boards are assembled so that the layers meet at the crossing of the fibers. The pulley block, which is responsible for the tensioning of the boards, will also be an extremely important part. The wheel shaft is fixed in the insert, which is located inside the frame. The axle is adjusted by means of 2 threaded rods. Now let’s move directly to the peculiarities of the assembly process.

From a bicycle

Let’s consider the process on the example of a variant, made of bicycle wheels. First the frame is created, which will be the base. It can be made from an inch of pine, planed to a thickness of two millimeters on the rismus. The frame can be glued from a number of overlapping planks. It is made in the shape of the letter C. The base for the tensioning guide with the wheel is mounted on top, and two supports are mounted on the bottom, which are connected to the base. When gradually gluing them together, care must be taken to ensure that the parts are perpendicular, so that the frame is flat.

The next part is to assemble and mount the movable block fixing the wheel on top. Such a block should move in the vertical direction and carry out the tension of the saw blade. On the frame horns made earlier an oak profile is mounted, forming a guide-type groove. The block itself is a rectangular frame with an upper wheel shaft holder inserted, which moves the wheel.

The next aspect is to make the wheels of the saw. They should have a diameter of 40 centimeters. It is best to make them from either fiberboard or plywood. The easiest thing to do is to glue them together from three plywood circles.

It is important to pay special attention to the central part. The wheels can be made using a milling machine. A hole is made in the circle in the center, where the mill type compass is inserted. This hole is used for aligning the workpieces and then gluing them together.

Then plywood flanges should be made and placed on the wheels. The flange itself is made of two elements. The outer one and a half millimetres thick holds the bearing. The one on the inside is one centimeter thick and forms the space between the wheel and the bearing. Make a hole in the outer flange for the bearing and press it in with a mallet. The flanges are glued to the wheel, and then a wheel shaft bracket is made to be placed on the bottom.

Also, 4 technological holes are made in the wheels, so that it is possible to install clamps when gluing. When the wheel is glued, it should immediately be mounted on the shaft. If everything is okay, you can do the wheel mount.

After that, the standard pulley is attached to one wheel. It remains only to carry out wheel balancing. It is possible to use the bearings as a support for the blade where the cut will be made. After the temporary axle has been horizontally secured and the bearings have been put in place, the wheel is set so that it just rotates and its heaviest part is lowered. Then make small indentations in the bottom of the wheel from the rear, which will be the last balancing step. After that, you need to put on the cut chambers from the wheels of children’s bicycles.

It remains to attach the wheels to the saw frame. Install the top wheel first. Put the washer on the shaft, and then secure it with a bolt. Do the same with the wheel from below. Using a ruler, align the wheels flat. Clamp both wheels and carry out tests. The band saw is ready.

From the jigsaw

Consider how to make a tool from an electric jigsaw. To make such a saw, it is necessary to carry out the following actions:

  • Form a frame from boards, similar to a bollard with dimensions according to certain drawings, inside which to mount the electric motor;
  • Make a rod out of a bar;
  • attach supports for the plywood pulleys, so that it is possible to saw various workpieces;
  • attach the frame to the frame;
  • In the support at the bottom make a hole for the pulley, where the sleeve with 2 bearings is inserted;
  • Lay a table top, made of plywood, on top;
  • trim the sides.

After that, it is necessary to make a connection between the pulleys from the motor and the belt, which carries out the cutting. They are attached to a shaft made of steel rod. The pulleys themselves are made from plywood circles, which are glued together to make a piece 3 centimeters thick. There must be three of them. One is needed for the belt wire, two more for the belt web.

The first one is installed inside the bollard, and the others are installed at the bottom and top, as they will activate the saw. At the center of what is on top, make a hole. The bearing is inserted into the sleeve, and then secured. This pulley is then covered with a bicycle tube.

The upper pulley is attached movably, so that the cutting belt can be tensioned. The lower pulleys should be attached to the shaft. On the one that will be leading, put the strap. When the elements are assembled, they should be aligned. They must be in the plane of the vertical type. You can use washers for this. The belt for cutting is attached to the pulleys, and the machine itself is equipped with a guide part.

A simple model made of plywood

Let’s describe another variant of creating a saw. from plywood. To create the base, it is better to take a stronger wood. It is also necessary to decide on the drawings.

It is necessary to make a frame in the shape of the letter C, which has already been described above, and then the table should be assembled. Its height should be optimal for work. In addition, it should put the bottom pulley, the drive pulley and the motor. The table can be of any shape.

The table top is placed directly on the support from below, and then the pulleys are cut out. They can be any diameter but the bigger they are the longer and the better the saw will work.

You have to choose the right kind of blade. The best ratio of blade to pulley diameter is one to a thousand.

A special movable block will be needed to secure the pulley on top, which must travel in a horizontal direction. This is needed for the band to be tensioned. You need a special lifting mechanism. The simplest option is a bar mounted under the pulley block and connected to the lever with an extremely tight spring. Also, self-centering bearings should be provided in the pulley mounting at the top, so you can quickly put on and take off the wheels. They should be attached as tightly as possible, otherwise the construction will soon become loose.

Along the blunt end of the saw, it is necessary to mount the guides on a small block. If you want to keep it simple, you can screw three roller-type bearings to it. On the first will rest a part of the blade (it will be flat). The other two will hold the band on the sides.

Fine tuning of the rails at the fixed point is essential. Even a slight deviation can cause problems. It is best to mark the bar position with the webbing taut as much as possible and the rails already in place. Instead of two bearings on the sides, you can form stoppers from wood. The design is generally similar to the solutions described above.

What kind of webbing should you choose

It depends on what you are planning to cut. Consider the options:

  • Bimetallic, created from a high-strength alloy, so it is suitable for sawing even very tough materials. Will not stretch, tear, rust or blunt for a long time.
  • Diamond. The natural abrasive is very hard, so it is used to cut marble, precious stones as well as granite and quartz. The cut is precise, with no tears or chips.
  • Carbide. can cut cast iron and titanium, as well as other workpieces that are the most difficult to process.
  • Of tool steel. inexpensive, classic belts, which in most cases are installed on band saws for metal and wood with their own hands.

How to install pulleys correctly

The pulleys of the machine should be ground so that when putting on the belt protrudes over their edge by a couple of centimeters. The whole structure runs on special guides. tubes that are positioned horizontally. This unit, if necessary, can be fixed in place with bolts.

To prevent the bands from falling off the pulleys during the operation of the machine, they must be installed not parallel, but at a slight angle. as a result of such installation during the saw operation the band will be “pulled” onto the rollers by itself.

The right pulley is used as a driven pulley, so you have to attach a spring to automatically tighten it during work. The left-hand pulley is therefore the driving pulley and must be rigidly fixed during own assembly of the draw frame. Master pulley must be moved when changing saw sizes.

Working rules for the band saw

The large volume of materials to be processed requires a blade with large teeth to be installed on the machine. Use of multi-purpose bandsaws is best.

  • If large-sized workpieces are to be processed, it is worth installing a band saw with large teeth; universal cutting belts are best. So there will be no need to change the blade when processing different materials;
  • Decide on the place where you wish to install the machine and fix it firmly on a stable surface to avoid vibrations during the sawing operation. The room in which you install the band saw must be well ventilated.
  • When you’re done working, remove the saw belt and, accordingly, tension it exclusively before working. This will extend the useful life of the webbing
  • Every two hours of work turn off the band saw and let the motor, in this example drill, rest, and at the same time check for faults. This rule will protect the worker from injury, and the tool from overheating.
  • From time to time, check the setting of the cutting tines.

Hello! Here I needed a band saw for a home workshop, decided to make their own hands.

In the presence of the electric motor for 300 watts, I decided to use it for his homemade.

The 1830 x 16 mm band saw blade will also be used. Let’s make the drive wheels of plywood.

These are the blanks for the drive wheels.

From the angle welded frame, installed the motor, drive wheels, made belt drive.

To keep the saw from slipping while sawing, put thrust bearings. The assembly consists of three bearings and two angles. I made the holes oval to regulate clearances between them and the band. Two such knots were made, the second one is put under the table.

Retractable boom, consisting of two welded angles and inserted profile tube. It is fixed by bolt through the welded nut. The boom housing is bolted to the horizontal bar and has slippage for adjustment.

From a profile pipe made the frame of the table, on the frame will be screwed sheet wood chipboard.

Installed the protection tape on the opposite side from the cut, and a box on the top wheel.

The result is a homemade band saw for the home handyman. Saws very well and quickly, I am completely satisfied with my undertaking.
