What kind of fuel to fill the STIHL 180?
Each chainsaw has three basic elements that make it work. These include a 2-cylinder carburettor engine and two tanks. one contains the fuel mixture, and the other contains oil for chain lubrication. Fuel tank capacity is 0.25 l, which allows you to work without stopping for 45-55 minutes. The oil tank is about half the volume. This two-tank ratio allows the contents of both tanks to run out at almost the same time.
When working 2-stroke engines do not use the oil pump system, so for chain saw “STIHL” oil in gasoline to lubricate the shaft, piston and other working parts must be added. Attempts to work on one gasoline or failure to comply with the proportions indicated in the manual on the composition of the fuel and lubricant mixture of the two components, will lead to tool failure.
It is important to keep the oil to gasoline ratio. Lack of lubrication causes wear and tear on all parts that can lead to seizure. With too much oil, the engine will start to smoke heavily, which will cause it to get sooty, and its performance will be reduced.
The correct proportions are given by each manufacturer in the instruction manual. This varies from saw to saw. For example, the STIHL, Husqvarna, FUBAG and Champion models usually have an oil to gasoline ratio of 1:50, but PARTNER and Makita have a ratio of 1:40. Huter recommends following the oil ratio, which is indicated on the oil bottle, the main thing is that it should be suitable for air-cooled two-stroke engines.
List of the best
Now let’s have a look at the optimum oils, both in quality and price category, that are commonly used for STIHL chain saws. And directly give them a small characteristic, so:
This kind of oil is widely used directly for small four-stroke engines. It can be used regardless of the time of year, but it must be remembered that the air temperature must not be below.15 °C. This oil is sold directly in bottles with a capacity of 0.6 liters and costs in the range of 360.
This oil is available in a 100 ml bottle for only 90. It is added directly to the gasoline. The ratio of their quantities must not exceed 1:50, i.e. 20 g. oil and one liter of gasoline.
What’s more, this lubricant has been specially developed for STIHL machines. Its main ingredient is minerals. But it can also be used in other models of other manufacturers. The main thing is that these chainsaws have a two-stroke engine.
The weight of the container in which the oil is sold is one liter. It is intended directly for STIHL chain saws, but is also suitable for machines from other manufacturers. Alternative fuel option
For fuelling domestic and professional chainsaws it is recommended to use motor gasoline type AI-92 that does not contain alcohol components and additional additives.
Up to the present moment it is still a moot point whether it is allowed to put 95 gasoline in a chainsaw. Theoretically gasoline AI-95 has better anti-detonation properties than standard AI-92, but in practice I prefer the latter.
The problem is that in order to increase the anti-detonation characteristics the producers and sellers introduce additives into the composition of the 95th gasoline, the quality and efficiency of which raise reasonable doubts among the specialists.
Such fuel doesn’t fully comply with the demanded specifications, it is not stable for a long period of storage. After 3-4 months of durability its functional properties deteriorate by 25-30.
What kind of gasoline should I put in my STIHL 180?
Durability and service life of a chainsaw is determined not only by the conditions of its operation, but also by the quality of the fuel used for fueling. In addition to special conditions of use for the first few refuelings, you should also pay attention to the quality of the fuel mixture.
STIHL professional chain saws have 2-stroke engines and require high-quality fuel. a precise mix of high-octane gasoline and oil, engine rated for high engine speeds. Choosing the right gasoline and oil for your STIHL chain saw is the key to long and successful use.
The first question you need to ask before starting work is what kind of gasoline to put in your STIHL chain saw.
STIHL chain saws only use unleaded high-octane gasoline, t. е. with a higher octane rating than 90. Filling with low-octane fuel will overheat the engine, cause the piston to jam and damage the engine. Therefore, it is optimal to fill gasoline AI-92 or AI-95 in a chainsaw, but there is a question of fuel quality.
Low-quality AI-92 can “fall short” of the declared octane number, and AI-95 often contains a lot of additives, which do not help the engine at all. In addition, if the additives are of poor quality, they are short-lived, and after a few days the fuel purchased may turn into a low-octane fuel that is not suitable for the chainsaw engine.
Good 95, on the other hand, can cause damage to the piston system. Thus, some users have found a way out: refuel the chainsaw with gasoline AI-92 mixed with AI-95. In this way the optimum balance between the octane number and the quantity of additives is reached.
Choice of oil
STIHL chain saw 180 chain saw oil is mixed with petrol and put straight into the tank, unlike in four-stroke engines. It is recommended that you fill your chain saw with the oil listed in the instruction manual for each model.
Never use oil intended for low-speed engines (boats, scooters, etc.). д.).
It can significantly shorten the life of the engine, and if traces of such a substance are found in the cylinder-piston group, the tool will be considered out of warranty, t. е. will not be under warranty repair or exchange.
Synthetic and mineral STIHL chain saw oils are available in a wide variety of capacities. from 100 ml to 5 l. Mineral ones have a lower cost, while semi-synthetic and synthetic ones ensure complete combustion during engine operation, i.e. е. no fouling and a minimum of toxic compounds in the exhaust.
In addition, synthetic oils retain their qualities in a much wider temperature range, and also contain special additives useful for engine operation: antioxidant, detergent, preservative, etc. д.
You can choose the oil that best suits your needs depending on the model of chain saw and how often you use it. Consumption is low, and in view of the expiration date of the synthetic and mineral oils, you might not have enough time to use up even a 1 liter bottle.
So, if the estimated amount of work is small, you can avoid buying a bulky canister and limit yourself to a bottle. Only STIHL mineral oils have no expiration date.
How to dilute
STIHL fuel mix for STIHL saws is made by mixing high-octane gasoline and 2-stroke oil. The ratio of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw is as follows: if the power of the machine does not exceed 1.5 kW, then the ratio is 1:40 (t. е. STIHL mineral lubricants have an expiry date only: STIHL fuel oil (approx. 25 ml/ liter of petrol) and 1:50 for higher outputs (20 ml/ litre).
Never add STIHL gasoline to the fuel tank of your STIHL chain saw in a separate fuel can. These engines do not have an oil pump and the possibility of its installation, so the tank is filled only with ready fuel. On sale there are even special canisters with two necks, so that it was more convenient to dilute the mixture, but you can add oil to gasoline for chainsaws and in an ordinary canister.
It is better to follow the proportions as precisely as possible: surplus oil will leave a mark on the spark plugs and pistons and provoke detonation during combustion. This can reduce the life of the engine. You will also be forced to breathe in unburned fumes from the exhaust fumes. At the same time, too much gasoline can damage the pistons because of insufficient lubrication.
To dilute gasoline, it is recommended to use special tools: a measuring jug for gasoline, a dispenser for lubricant, a syringe, a canister for preparing the mixture, and a watering can for filling the saw’s tank. All of these accessories are available from STIHL dealers and authorized dealers.
Some folk craftsmen in the absence of special measuring accessories advise to use a plastic bottle: a half-liter container filled with gasoline, poured a full cap (from the same bottle) of oil. In the output you get an approximate ratio of 1:50.
It is better to calculate the quantity of mixture for refueling in advance on the basis of the anticipated amount of work and the stated consumption of this engine. Most chainsaws have a tank capacity of about 0.5 liter, and a 2 kW engine will consume about 1.2 liter per hour of work (see the manual for the exact specifications). Thus it does not make sense to prepare mixtures in larger quantities than 3 refills in a row.
Before you start preparing the mixture, it is advisable to thoroughly clean and dry the neck of the canister and the area around it to avoid the entry of foreign matter: dust, water, etc. д. The same is done for the tank before refueling: the cap and the neck are cleaned of dust and clogged dirt so it does not get into the gas tank and then into the engine.
When calculating the proportions, remember that it is better to overfill a little oil than to economize on it: only a substantial excess of lubricant is dangerous to the formation of carbon deposits, and a slight excess will not harm the engine. If you underfill it, the consequences can be more dangerous.
When mixing fuel for your STIHL chain saw the manufacturer recommends pouring oil into the fuel can first, then adding gasoline and then mixing it thoroughly. In practice it has been found that oil can “stick” to the sides of the can and does not mix well, which is why it is better to pour the oil into the gasoline and mix it thoroughly.
It is better not to leave fuel residue in the tank to prolong the life of sealing rubbers and other parts susceptible to chemical damage. If stored for a long time (more than one month) the fuel reduces its octane rating and other physical properties and is no longer safe for use.
over, after emptying the fuel tank you should start the engine and let it idle until it stops on its own. that will mean that the carburettor is also free from fuel residue.
It is important to remember that the longevity of the equipment depends largely on the user. Savings on fuel in the case of a chainsaw can cost much more in the long run. non-warranty repair of a failed saw or the purchase of a new unit. Following the manufacturer’s instructions in most cases helps to understand the principles of the unit and prolong its trouble-free and trouble-free operation.
What kind of gas and how much oil to put in brushcutters and chain saws
Answered by a Technoprokat mechanic
This is one of the most common questions I get from my customers, so let’s look at it in detail. For simplicity let’s split the question into two sections: what kind of gasoline to fill and how much 2-stroke oil to fill.
Oil to gasoline ratio for a chainsaw
Every chainsaw company adjusts the engines and base carburetors to work with different amounts of lubricant. The proportion of oil and petrol for a chainsaw may therefore vary slightly.
Most often, when mixing fuel with oil, manufacturers advise using a proportion of 1:50, or 1:40. This means that 1 part of engine grease should be mixed in 50 or 40 parts of fuel, respectively.
It’s pretty easy to convert that to a more accessible formulation. For example, 1 liter of fuel contains 1000 ml. If 1000 ml divided by 40, you have 25 ml. It means that for 1 liter of petrol you need to dilute 25 ml of lubricant. The same formula should be used when the manufacturer recommends preparing the fuel mixture exclusively in the proportion of 1:50. To do this, divide 1000 ml by 50, and you get 20 ml. This means that 20 ml of engine grease should be diluted in one liter of fuel.
Things are a little different with Chinese chainsaws. Their manufacturers advise to dilute gasoline for chainsaws at a ratio of 1:25. It means that the owners of Chinese tools need to mix exactly 40 ml of lubricant in 1 liter of pure gasoline. This ratio is due to the fact that in terms of quality of assembly and selection of components these chainsaws are slightly inferior to their Western counterparts. In the engines of American, European and Japanese models, the distance between the cylinders and pistons is much smaller than in chainsaws from China. In this regard, the amount of lubrication required to operate the first. much less.
Preparing the fuel mixture: the proportion of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw
The chainsaw engine is the “heart” of the tool, that’s why it is very important to use the right fuel mixture.
The fuel mixture for a chainsaw is made of two components. oil and gasoline. Gasoline chainsaws are equipped with a two-stroke engine, so oil is not added to the lubrication system (as in a four-stroke engine) but directly to the gasoline. It is very important to observe correct proportions of ingredients and, of course, in no case trying to work with pure gasoline, because that way you will quickly “kill” the chain saw.
The oil must be intended for the two-stroke engines of gardening and forestry machinery (i.e. you should by no means use oil for boat motors or scooters). As practice shows, such oil can be purchased at any store or service center, where chainsaws are sold or serviced.
If we talk about what gasoline to fill a chainsaw, it would be optimal to use fuel with the octane number of A-95, in this case, the savings on fuel can turn out badly. European manufacturers often say that you can use gasoline A-90 or A-92, but in post-Soviet countries, the quality of gasoline is inferior to European, so in our reality it is better to use higher-quality gasoline.
As for the ratio of gasoline-oil mixture itself, everything is simple: it is necessary to clearly follow the instructions of the tool. All chainsaw manufacturers indicate the required ratio in the instruction manual or in the tool’s certificate, moreover, the proportions for filling the chainsaw may differ depending on the model of chain saw. As a rule, the oil to gasoline ratio in a chain saw of famous manufacturers is 1:40 or 1:50, which means 1 part oil to 40 parts of gasoline, for example.
Now the arithmetic. 1 liter of gasoline = 1000 ml of gasoline, divide by 40 and you get 25 ml of oil. If you perform the same actions to the ratio 1:50, then you get 20 ml of oil to 1 liter of gasoline.
As for budget chainsaws made in China, the situation is slightly different. Gasoline to oil ratio for a chainsaw made in China 1:25, that is, 1000 ml of gasoline divided by 25, we get 40 ml of oil. The reason is that brand name chainsaws have a solid build and the distance between the pistons and cylinders in the engine is much smaller than in Chinese chainsaws, so the required amount of oil is almost twice as different.
In order to measure a correct portion of oil, use an ordinary medical syringe of sufficient volume.
One more thing to note. pour the gasoline in the dry gasoline canister first, then the oil. The procedure on the contrary is fraught with a fuel mixture of poor quality, because the oil is denser, will stick to the bottom of the canister. So it can’t be mixed well.

Always prepare the fuel mixture in a canister and fill the gas tank with ready-to-use special fuel! Never prepare and mix it directly in the gasoline tank of your chainsaw!
If you have already solved the problem of how to dilute gasoline for a chain saw, then on the conditions of storage and expiration date of the fuel mix it is worth saying a few words. It is best and easiest to prepare gasoline-oil mixture for 1 liter of gasoline, it is recommended to do it just before working with the tool. Gasoline tanks in chainsaws have a capacity of 0.3 to 1 liter. In normal domestic applications, the entire volume of the propellant mixture is seldom used in one go, so the remainder can be stored until the next use. It is necessary to store the fuel mixture in a special canister for gasoline, in a dark dry place. It is optimal to calculate that the storage time of the ready mixture is 7-10 days
The point is that now the oil on the market is not synthetic, but organic, i.e. natural. After 10 days all lubricating properties are lost, gasoline simply “eats” the oil. Naturally, you can no longer use such fuel, it can cause the chainsaw to break down and malfunction.
At the end of work it is necessary to drain the fuel mixture and start the chainsaw. the tool will stall (so that the saw has a dry carburetor) and now you can leave it until the next operating session.
