Lawn mowing: How to cut the grass properly
Having an emerald, velvety lawn will be a matter of pride for every gardener, provided it is properly cared for. Regular mowing is an important step in keeping your lawn in good condition.
Regular cutting of the grass promotes the growth of the grass, which then leads to a dense sod that reduces the number of weeds, which are literally displaced by the young shoots, but also prolongs the vegetation period and prevents plants from exhaustion. So, with the mowing procedure, you can solve several lawn care tasks at the same time.
Why and how often you mow your lawn
Lawns are usually planted with grasses of the cereal family, and mowing prevents them from flowering and fruiting. This common method prolongs the growing season of plants, promotes excellent rooting, growth of lateral green shoots, and tillering. Continuous mowing promotes the consolidation of humus, and densely growing cultural grass prevents the growth and spreading of weeds. The greenish color of the lawn is maintained during the whole warm period as a result of the timely mowing.
There is no certainty about the frequency of mowing the lawn. This parameter is dependent on several unbiased reasons:
- The type of vegetation being seeded;
- Type of soil and fertilizer;
- Seasonal characteristics of plant growth;
- Lawn function.
The first mowing of the lawn begins in spring when the grass on the planned lawn grows to a height of 12-14 cm. It is recommended to mow the lawn when the greenery rises to 7-10 cm. Depending on the purpose of the greenish cover, the grass is mowed to a level of 4-7 cm. Next mowing is recommended whenever grass has risen to the height of 2-3 cm above the desirable level.
In summer it is not recommended to mow the lawn very briefly to avoid early drying of plants.
The process of mowing the grass, that is, the performance of certain movements trimmer, is only part of a more complex process that includes:
Therefore, we recommend reading articles that cover these actions, that is:
Choosing a line
For an effective mowing of land it is necessary to choose the right line form and size.
Irregularly shaped string will also mow vegetation, but in terms of speed and quality will be inferior to the one that better matches this particular vegetation.

the thicker the cord, the better it performs, but the heavier the strain on the tool.
Too thick a string will break the gearbox and shaft bushings, and in particularly unfortunate cases can severely damage the grass trimmer. You will find more information on how the reel works and instructions on how to choose the cord here (Which line to choose for your trimmer).
To charge your automatic trimmer head with line, insert a cord of sufficient length and, after leveling both protruding pieces, then twist the button to the appropriate side.
Remember, the direction of rotation of the shaft trimmers with a straight and curved rod does not match, so they set different spools. Be careful, the trimmer line is drawn on the body of the head, indicating which way to twist the button.
To charge the semi-automatic head, proceed as follows:
How to Cut Grass with String Trimmer
- Squeeze the latches that hold the cover together with your fingers, then remove it;
- pull out the bobbin;
- Remove any leftover old fishing line;
- wind a new string, the winding direction is indicated on the bobbin, the cover and the body of the reel;
- Insert the bobbin into the body;
- lead both ends of the fishing line outward;
- Put the cap on until it clicks into place, so that the latches lock into place.
The way to charge a mechanical reel depends on its type (in some cases you will have to wind the cord onto the removed head, then put it on the gasoline or electric mower).
For a detailed description of these trimmer heads and tips on winding the line on them, see these articles:
Trimmer cords are made of various types of nylon, and this material is not highly resistant to tearing or abrasion, so prepare the section before cutting.
To do this, walk through its area and remove all debris, from plastic bottles to large rocks or pieces of rebar.
If some obstacles could not be removed, then mark their perimeter to mow as carefully as possible along it, otherwise when mowing grass in this area you will use up the line for the trimmer much faster, and there is also a chance of damaging the grass trimmer.
Choice of equipment
To understand what equipment is needed, it is necessary to understand the processes that occur when cutting the grass with a line.
Moving at high speed, the filament hits and cuts the stem or grass foliage, and then the tip of the plant falls to the ground. Sometimes a falling fragment gets under the trimmer line and it gets cut again, maybe even several times.
Every time the cord hits a patch of grass it splashes sap and fragments of chopped vegetation fly out at varying angles, making it highly likely that such a drop or fragment will hit your eye.
Given the speed of the fishing line, their impact can cause serious injury to the eye, and in the field it is extremely difficult to clear the surface of the eyeball from them. That’s why a basic piece of equipment is goggles or a mask to protect your eyes from flying drops and shredded grass.
Other important elements of outfit are:
- protective headphones (relevant when working with brushcutters);
- comfortable suspension system (relevant to any trimmer with a top-mounted motor);
- comfortable shoes with a ribbed non-slip sole.
Preparing the grass trimmer
Any machine will work with flat mechanical reels. If you are going to mow grass with an automatic or semi-automatic mowing head, you need a higher guard.
Machines originally designed to work with a fishing line were equipped with a protective cover of increased height, and some models, which included discs or knives, were equipped with a cover with the so-called “beard”, that is, a removable lower part. This allowed you to change the height of the cowl, adjusting it to the cutting tool.
But the apparatuses which were not equipped with a regular reel at all were equipped with a low protective cover without a “beard”, therefore to work with a collapsible mechanical or any plastic reel you need either a “beard” or a cover of increased height.
In addition, when working with a knife, the protective cover was often damaged, so to cut the grass with a line it had to be replaced. The most effective was the choice of a universal cover with a “beard”, such as this.
You can also learn more about how the electric trimmer works in this article.
Theoretically, mowing grass with a brushcutter or electric mower is similar to using an ordinary lawn trimmer, that is, turning the machine from left to right, gradually moving forward.
With each pass, the line for the trimmer will cut a strip of vegetation 1-5 cm wide, and the cut grass will either fall on the mowed area or fly to the sides.
However, in reality, much depends on:
Unlike a lawnmower, which collects mowed vegetation in the grass receptacle, the grass trimmer only cuts the grass and leaves it on the site.
If you choose the wrong trajectory, the mowed grass will get back under the cord, which will cause it to be chopped, reducing the travel speed.
Mowing the lawn. to what height should the stems be shortened?
Another important consideration when cutting the lawn is the height by which the grass should be shortened. Also in this case, certain rules should be followed:
- once we shorten the lawn by 1/3 of its height, which is the optimal solution. At the most you can shorten it to half of its height;
- When mowing a new lawn for the first time, shorten the grass by just 1-1.5 cm, following the same principle for the next two mowings;
- The optimal height of the lawn is 4-8 cm. A height of 3 cm can be kept for a decorative lawn that we do not walk on;
- Do the last trim before the winter at a height of not more than 8 cm (preferably 4-5 cm). Grass that is too high will be more susceptible to snow mold, and grass that is too low can cause the root system to freeze.
If the lawn has been neglected and the grass has grown too high, do not cut it sharply. In such a situation, the best solution is to mow it two or three times at intervals of 2-3 days. each time we remove a small fragment of stems, gradually bringing the turf to the desired height.
Do you mow grass after it has rained??
Because the surface of leafy garden and ornamental grass is not perfectly smooth, water droplets remain on it after rain.
So the same dangers as described above arise during mowing.
That is, gasoline lawnmowers or grass trimmers can be used, but immediately after use, replace the grease in the gearbox or bearing to avoid damaging it.
So wait until the grass dries (on a sunny day it will take 1-2 hours), and then mow it with any available or convenient tool.
How often should you mow the lawn?
If you mow grassy plants regularly, it will provoke the formation of dense turf, which will not give a chance for active growth of weeds. Weeds will simply be displaced by new cultivated shoots. Regular cutting also protects the grass from exhaustion and prolongs its growing season.
Recommended frequency of cutting in spring is 4-7 days, in summer 7-10 days. Exactly how much time should pass between mowing, will depend on weather conditions, soil characteristics, the condition of the grass cover and the season. The last mowing should be done in mid-autumn. And then proceed to prepare the lawn for wintering.
So, it is possible to have a beautiful green lawn in your garden or home plot if you take regular care of it and mow it properly. It is important not to miss the moment of the first mowing, otherwise later the site will begin to overgrow with weeds, and plants grow and develop incorrectly. The tool with which to cut the lawn should be chosen based on the size of the plot, your own experience and capabilities.
What to do with grass clippings from the lawn
After the very first mowing, all grass clippings should be removed from the plot. During subsequent dry weather treatments, it can be used as mulch when the mowing frequency is reduced. This will keep the turf and plants from losing moisture. It is distributed evenly over the entire area of the lawn, but after the weather changes, especially if it has rained, the remains must be removed.
Lawn grass can be left to dry out for 2-3 days if there are animals on the farm to use as hay. It is also suitable for composting. For this purpose the cutted green mass is put into a special pit for decomposition, and then it is used as an organic fertilizer for the needs of garden or vegetable plants.
So, mowing the lawn is a troublesome but necessary activity. Adhere to the rules for the care of the home garden decorative element of the plot and enjoy its emerald shades all season.
All grass mowing tools are potentially dangerous devices that can severely injure and traumatize people, so use them only if you follow all safety rules.
One of those rules is about lighting the area you’re going to cut unwanted vegetation; any mower or grass trimmer instruction manuals forbid nighttime or low-light operation.
Disregarding this rule will lead to the fact that you may not see an obstacle that you will trip on or damage the blade/disc.
Another danger is especially important for owners of electrical (power) devices. in bad light conditions the cable is hardly visible and there is a high risk of tripping over it, as well as cutting it with a trimmer or lawnmower. Both pose a high risk of injury and equipment damage.
When mowing a lawn or ornamental lawn in poor lighting conditions, you may accidentally cut the grass too low, causing “gaps” in the green surface that negatively affect the appearance of the area.
This is particularly important if you work on uneven ground or use a hand-held grass trimmer of any kind, because this tool must be checked for its exact position on the ground at all times.
Despite the fact that the lawnmower operates on the principle of a reissue mower, that is, it cuts the grass at exactly the same height, an unfortunate collision with a bump or hole can ruin a beautiful lawn. The position of the grass trimmer cutting tool relative to the ground depends only on the skill of the operator, and with insufficient light it is not always possible to keep it at the right height at the required angle.
Do not forget safety precautions
In the pursuit of successful results and a stunning lawn, do not forget your own safety. To do so, always follow the rules listed below:
- Do not allow children in the vicinity when mowing. If you didn’t notice a small pebble or other object when mowing your lawn, it can fly out from under the mower at high speed and injure someone;
- If the area is sloped, mow crosswise, not up and down. At any time you can not hold the mower, it will tip over and an accident will occur;
- Mow an area when the grass is dry, not only to prevent it from breaking. On wet grass with uncomfortable shoes, you can easily slip;
- If you notice while mowing that grass clogs the clippers or the discharge chute and you need to clean it up, shut off the engine first. Only when the blades have come to a complete stop can you begin to clean them;
- When using an electric mower or grass trimmer, be careful not to run over the power cord;
- It is preferable to wear closed clothing, especially underneath, when working. Even the smallest pebble that flies out in your direction can cause injury.
Don’t worry if your first shearing didn’t yield the desired result even after strictly following all of our recommendations. You may not yet have fully mastered your chosen cleaning equipment. Perhaps your movements were quicker than they should have been. Either way, the green cover will recover quickly, and you’ll have time to work on your mistakes. After all, skill comes with practice!
