Which way to put the chain on the electric saw?
All about chains for electric saws: how to choose, correctly replace and sharpen them
Among the useful things kept in the back of the household owners of country estates, you can always find devices and equipment for cutting wood. It can be a jigsaw, a hand saw, a handy electric saw, or a powerful unit that runs on liquid fuel. Any of the “helpers” requires certain operating skills and careful maintenance. For example, owners of electric-powered tools need to know what kind of chains for electric saws are, whether they are difficult to change themselves and whether a file is suitable for proper sharpening.
Large-scale logging or serious outdoor construction work requires a more powerful tool. a chainsaw. However, if you need to occasionally touch up a fence, make repairs to the house or saw a few logs, then the ideal tool is an electric saw. It’s easy to use in confined spaces. inside the house, in a barn or utility room, or out in the field if there’s a power source nearby.
What other advantages a powered tool has? It does not require time to prepare the fuel mixture and cuts more accurately than its gasoline counterparts. Minus one. gentle mode of use. You have to get used to the interval sawing of wood. This means that after 40 seconds the chainsaw needs about 20 seconds of “breathing room.
So, if you are already the happy owner of an ergonomic, comfortable electric saw, prepare yourself for the fact that you will have to become more familiar with the device, replacement and sharpening of the chain. the main dynamic part.
Before you choose a chain saw, look for information about overheat protection. The life of a protected engine is much longer and the performance is higher
Features of manual and mechanized sharpening
Dulling of the cutting edges of the saw chain manifests itself:
There are several kinds of chain sharpening aids for restoring cutting performance.
In the simplest version is a holder fixed to the bar, complete with a set of special files, in the other sharpening machine with a power drive. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Inefficient and time-consuming manual chain sharpening helps maintain chain life. The mechanized method provides a good performance, but the lack of an individual approach to each chain cutting link negatively affects its durability.
How to install a bar with a chain on a chainsaw?
It’s not uncommon to have trouble operating a chainsaw if the bar is not installed correctly. If the saw does not operate normally, you will notice a distinctive rattling noise, slight vibrations and low chainsaw performance. The bar is attached to the body between the outer plate, and is locked in place with a special bolt.
Popularly referred to as the “engine assembly”, this part consists of the drive sprocket and locking bolts. It is easy to install the guide bar together with the saw. you need to remove all the protective covers, unscrew the fixing bolts by a third of the length and put the headset. Then tighten all the nuts and turn the tensioner with the special lever.
Installing the bar on STIHL and Husqvarna
STIHL chain saw models may vary in the assembly process. Step-by-step guide:
- Open the wing nut, remove chain sprocket cover. Turn it on the bar all the way to the right.
- Place the chain on the guide bar, starting from the top, with the cutting tooth on top pointing straight ahead.
- Attach the assembled bar to the chainsaw, stretch the construction on the sprocket. Slide the guide onto the collar bolt. Close the cover by engaging the pins in the holes provided by the manufacturer.
- Turn wing nut until sprocket cover touches motor housing.
- Rotate the clamping bolt forward, so the drive links must engage in the guide bar grooves. Tighten the wing nut fully.
At the end of the job, check the tension; if the headset does not move well, adjust the tension with the nut. The chain brake should be engaged before starting.
The assembly sequence for the Husqvarna saw chain is virtually identical. The main difference is that on most models the tension and adjustment of the headset to the body is controlled by two wing nuts instead of one. There is rarely a separate adjusting lever on the outer sprocket guard, so you should only use the bolts to adjust the tension.
Important! Before you start working with a chainsaw, you should carefully study the owner’s manual. It describes in detail all the steps involved in setting up and assembling the tool.
What to do if the chain slackens
If the chain slackens, it can injure the operator because the saw blade can break or just come off the guide bar. Of course, modern chainsaws have safety and emergency stop systems, but these systems do not always work correctly.
It is important not to fit a chain to a chainsaw with defective or damaged saw chain links, in addition to the danger of breaking at any time, such a chain will grind the guide bar grooves, which will lead to its warping, uneven cutting and failure of the guide bar.
How to put the Chain back on a Worx Electric Chainsaw
Why the chain can sag, even after a short period of use?
- There can be problems with the guide bar. Sometimes the chain tension can become loose because of operator negligence or because the threads of the guide bar fixing bolts are excessively worn, and this can cause the chain to become loose. It is necessary to check the condition of the fixing bolts and if necessary replace them with new ones. This is not a problem if the bolts are sufficiently tightened.
- Any chain can wear out over time if you are reasonably careful with your chain saw. Trying to repair or assemble it from several is a futile endeavor. If the chainring is stretched due to natural causes, it is best to buy a new one.
- The sprocket is misaligned. The teeth of the sprocket may be sagging due to misalignment. If that’s the case, it’s best to call a service center to have the drive sprocket repaired and repositioned. To fix the drive sprocket in the correct position is quite difficult, because you will have to remove many small parts, remove the guide bar, and then assemble everything in the reverse order.
Review: Sparky TV 1835 electric saw. The saw is a good one, and the price is good
Today I want to share with you my purchase of a Sparky TV 1835 side-engine electric saw. So, the technical specifications:1. Engine power. 1800 watts;2. Chain speed. 11 meters per second;3. The tire. 16 inches;4. Weight 4 kg 200 grams.5. Engine power. 2.45 hp.Well, let’s open and look at the package and assemble.
Here’s a simple box, pretty dense, without a super design.
Saw is made, as it is written in the instruction manual in Bulgaria. Price 2200rn (5300rub). We open it and immediately we see the chain from the American company “Karlton” with 56 links, pitch 3/8″.
I will say that it looks like it is definitely not China. This is what the saw itself looks like.
Get the manual, a lot of different languages and Russian too. Be sure to flip through. There is a case with the guide bar. By the way the tire is also an American company “Karlton”. Tire 16 inches, 56 links. There is a chain oil, proprietary “Sparky”.
Let’s move on to the electric saw. What a beauty. It’s all molded, the plastic quality is excellent. There is a wrench on the handle. Oil reservoir for 200 ml. Here we have a “gauge” so we can always see how much oil is left, but always keep this tank full. In electric saws, oil runs out very fast, so don’t forget to refill it.
The wire is very short, about 15 cm. Make sure you have a long carrying cable.Let’s install the bar with the chain. Use the spanner that’s on the handle and unscrew the bolts on the side cover. Here’s our sprocket that we’re going to put the chain on. Here is how to install the chain, cutting tooth first.
Next is the chain tensioner, it is adjusted with a small screwdriver. Turn it counterclockwise so that the tensioning screw goes back about halfway.
Put the chain on the bar, hook it behind the sprocket. Hold the bar, and put on the cover. tighten the bolts and tension the chain clockwise. The tensioning is not very comfortable, but it needs to be done once before you start working, so it’s no big deal.
Always tighten the screws on the cover after tensioning the chain. The brake near my hand worked great, the chain stops instantly, it is made in case you will throw the electric saw at you. That’s why after you release the brake, don’t forget to put it in the opposite position.
The saw is not heavy, very handy, sits well in the hand. As for the work, I have nothing to compare it with, because it is the first saw in my operation. But after the first time, re-sawed everything in the cottage, and my eyes were looking for something else to saw.
I think that this electric saw will serve long and reliable, the saw is definitely worth a look!
The chain on the chain saw is loose, what to do?? Tips and Tricks
The chainsaw chain is in good condition for proper chainmaking. In this brochure we’ll talk about what to do if the chain is suddenly stretched?
Can the chain be repaired by yourself??
Chains saws tear with annoying frequency, fortunately, their manufacturers have foreseen this moment and made it possible to repair, even on your own. To rivet the chain by improvised means yourself you will have to buy spare links of appropriate type and size, rivets and special machines for manipulation.
This is important: even a professional repair. it is not a guarantee of “indefinite” work, the links inevitably wear out and the chain, alas, is capable of a treacherous break, and this moment is not predictable.
When to shorten the chain?
If the chain has suddenly become significantly longer and there is no longer enough screw to tension it, it is time to reduce it. Warning, do not remove more than a link or two at a time!
It is also necessary to shorten the saw chain, if the long guide bar is replaced with a smaller one. In extreme cases, it is acceptable to take links from a donor chain if they fit the parameters (their thickness, tooth shape, pitch).
The headset is stretched because of the following points:
Dust and dirt get on the saw in the process and wipe out the areas where the links join;
the oil pump is deficient or does not deliver oil at all, the chain overheats and pulls out;
The adjusting screws on a new saw make it inevitable that the chain will stretch;
the chain is lubricated with a really bad lubricant, such as used oil with micro pieces of metal that act as abrasives;
because of prolonged use, stretching occurs naturally.
What to do if the chain suddenly stretches?
if the chain is already stretched, but the links are still in good condition, you can just rivet it. The first step is to determine how many links need to be removed from it. To do this, put the bar on the saw, tighten the screw that tightens it to its end position, and measure the length. The next step is riveting.
To unbolt rivets, you will need: a thin bead, a vice, an emery or angle grinder with a wheel for grinding, a hammer, and an anvil. With this minimum set of tools, you can rivet on your own, without extra effort. Much more accurately and gently to remove rivets will help a special machine. riveting machine.
The rivet puncher is a mechanical machine, and actually works like a press. The anvil that comes with it has grooves that allow the headset to be set at different pitches. Rivet extrusion is carried out directly by the tips.
This is important: rivets vary in size from chain to chain, so it is essential that the riveting machine is equipped with several types of tips.
When the chain is riveted the defective link is simply removed, then a new one is installed and everything is riveted. For this you need a special machine, a riveting-rolling, electric. Read more about it below.
This machine is used for riveting with a pitch from 1/4″ to 0.404″. Cutting depth required. 1.1 to 2 mm. Included with it are rotating inserts and anvils, with markings:
“А”. This is marking inserts with a pitch of 3/8 and 0.404″;
The process itself looks like this: a chain with rivets and a replacement link is installed in the machine inserts. The roller presses the riveted link securely directly against the anvil. After starting the engine the rotating roller actually flattens the rivet. The operator tightens the adjustment screw to build up the roller’s pressure.
Such a machine is expensive enough, so riveting chains at home with it is not profitable. It is quite realistic to make a shortening without it, and here we will tell you in detail how.
How to remove a link without a special machine?
There are effective ways to do this:
To grind rivets you can use a commonplace emery machine, but do it carefully, so as not to damage the next whole link.
So, the heads are “decontaminated”, then it is necessary to install a bead (between the plates), and hit with a hammer as hard as you can. The plates should come off from the blow.
This is important: if the working type tooth needs to be replaced, you will have to rivet the links on the sides of it, too.
To rivet everything back on, you must first purchase replacement links, taking into account their profile, pitch, the type of chain itself. It is realistic to do this at a store that sells chainsaw parts and related consumables.
You put the riveted link directly on the chain, on the anvil. upwards with the open side. Then the plate itself has to be put on the rivets. You have to tap it with a hammer, this will help it to “seat” as tightly as possible.
To flatten the rivets you’ll need the hammer itself, as well as the bead and anvil. The anvil should be placed on the headset and the riveting bead should be pointed on the rivet. Now you have to hit it with a hammer. The next rivet is riveted in the same way. The thickening that appears will hold the link top plate firmly enough.
It is important: before putting the chain back on the saw it is necessary to check, if the link goes, if it is not jammed in the process of riveting. A chain with a clamped link must not be put on the saw!
About the consequences of improperly riveted chain
Poor quality repair can cause saw chain to break while cutting, and the chain itself can injure the operator. To avoid this, the chain should be tested on the lightest work after the repair, for example, on a couple of planks.
Read more about repair errors and their consequences:
Common mistake. No pitch match, because the new link has not been matched in thickness or pitch. Using the chain in this way will cause the sprocket on the bar to break and need to be replaced.
It often happens that the chain is put by the master in the wrong direction. The consequences of this mistake are the same as in the first point. An extended connecting link will also cause the sprocket to break.
If the chain is longer than the bars, the adjusting screw will not be enough to tension it, it will simply wobble and the wear on the sprocket will be very fast.
Important: You can find many authors on the internet who advise repairing chains by welding in their works. Do not take this kind of advice, it is given by incompetent professionals. Welded chains can be repaired only by gear chains (they are installed on transporters and in the mechanisms of agricultural machines) and not by chains for sawing!
In this brochure we have explained in detail all the issues involved in putting up a chain saw yourself and also what tools and special machines are needed for this. Costly repair machines are only necessary if you use the saw very often. But a wrongly riveted chain is not only a defective tool but also a risk of serious injury to the saw operator.

The chainsaw’s construction features
The main part of a chainsaw is the engine. Most modern machines have a single-cylinder engine. Air-cooled, two-stroke piston system. Oil in these types of engines is added directly to the gasoline, and all because the fuel constantly flushes the crankcase. The oil-to-gasoline ratio varies from 1:20 to 1:50, depending on the chainsaw manufacturer.
The air filter on gasoline-powered saws is just as important. It needs regular cleaning. If the filter is allowed to get very dirty, the dust from it will get right into the piston system, which will lead to engine failure.
If the filter is clogged, the saw loses speed, and the engine begins to overheat, and this can lead to burning of the piston rings.
The starter motor on gasoline-powered saws is a rope with a crank that you pull to start the engine. When you pull the rope, the teeth snag the ratchet, the handwheel starts to unwind.
Many people complain that it takes a long time to start the engine. This depends on whether the carburetor is set correctly. If the carburetor has the right oil-gasoline mix, you shouldn’t have any problems.
The main operating mechanism is a bar with a chain.
Chains consist of three types of teeth: driving, cutting, and connecting. They are connected by rivets. The cutting teeth are arranged on two sides: to the right and to the left.
There are two types of chains: high profile and low profile. The first type includes chains that have a large clearance, and the second type has a smaller clearance. Chains can also vary in shank thickness and link length. The chainsaw chain is attached to the bar, which guides it in the correct direction. The end of the bar has a specific groove that holds the links and allows the chain to rotate. There is a sprocket at the front of the bar. Chainsaw and guide bar are called headsets because they are detachable parts of the chainsaw.
Petrol saw has an automatic chain lubrication system. The bar feeds oil, which is then absorbed by the sawdust. If the saw is idling, the oil flow is stopped.
Why the chain on a chainsaw jams
Adjusting chain tension takes only a few minutes without experience, but with experience it takes less than a minute. Watching for proper tensioning is uncomplicated, but not watching is costly.
Depending on the purpose, that is, on the planned direction of sawing wood, chains for utility saws are divided directly into such types;
- longitudinal. the peculiarity of this type of headset is that when it is mounted and used on a garden tool, the productivity of the latter increases almost 2-fold;
- cross. by installing a cross headset with pobedite tips, the chainsaw operator can noticeably reduce the aggressiveness of the garden tool and reduce the load on the built-in factory motor, thereby making the engine’s vibration less noticeable.
Another important parameter for stable work, according to which chains are constantly divided up, is their pitch. Chainsaw chain pitch is the length of the gap between the three links.
There are headsets with such pitch characteristics on the market:
- 0,25 or 1/4. these parts are used in single-handed household saws that are not very powerful. Gardening tools of this type are most often used for precise wood-cutting and for short-term work in very confined spaces;
- 0.325 or 3/8. Most chain saws are equipped with this type of headset;
- 0.404 or 3/4. carbide-tipped saw blades of this type have larger dimensions. They are installed exclusively on powerful professional garden tools, which can be used to work on aerated concrete.
All available sawing parts are produced with the assumption that the larger the size, the higher the production rate. However, as the dimensions of the saw elements increase, so does the given width of the wood cut. To make the resistance of the material to be sawn less noticeable, you should install a large headset only on saws with an impressive power reserve.
Quite often the manufacturers divide the saw elements according to their shank thickness, which must necessarily coincide with the given slot sizes of the standard bars of the garden tools. Following this rule will improve the secure attachment of the part to the bar, and prevent the headset from slipping.
Another important parameter is the number of wires on the clothing. The greater the number, the faster the gasoline-powered saw will cut through hard wood or perform concrete work.
